Book On Conditionals in the Greek Pentateuch

Download or read book On Conditionals in the Greek Pentateuch written by Anwar Tjen and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines conditionals in the Greek Pentateuch from the point of view of the study of translation syntax. It takes seriously into account the double character of Septuagintal Greek, both as a translation from Hebrew and as vernacular Greek. Methodologically, the underlying Hebrew is taken as the point of departure in close comparison with the resultant translation, with the purpose of examining major features in the translators? handling of this complex construction. These include the rendering of verbal and non-verbal forms in the protasis and apodosis, the question of sense-division between the two constituent clauses, the influence of genre or discourse type and interference from the underlying form or structure. Detailed analyses of the resultant translation displays features that are natural Greek, on the one hand, and features that betray the character of "translation-language", on the other hand, owing to interference from the source text. The latter manifests itself most conspicuously in renderings that are ungrammatical or unnatural, and, in a more subtle way, through equivalents which are grammatically acceptable but occur with a strikingly high frequency in the Septuagint as compared with original Greek compositions contemporary with the Septuagint.

Book The Septuagint and Modern Study

Download or read book The Septuagint and Modern Study written by Sidney Jellicoe and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 1993 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Twenty-five years after it first appeared, Jellicoe's classic work is still one of the most comprehensive introductions to the Septuagint and cognate studies. Its completeness makes it valuable not only as a textbook, but also as a reference tool for those working in the Septuagint. In bringing together the principal features of twentieth-century Septuagint studies, the author provides a wealth of valuable information. The first part of the book traces the origins and transmission history of the LXX. The second part moves to a discussion of the various LXX manuscripts, versions, and critical editions, along with a brief discussion of language and style. The appendixes, bibliography, and various indexes increase the resource value of this volume."

Book On the Trail of the Septuagint Translators

Download or read book On the Trail of the Septuagint Translators written by Anneli Aejmelaeus and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays of this revised and expanded collection were written by Prof. Anneli Aejmelaeus over a period of 25 years. The thread that runs through all these essays and holds the collection together is translation technique, which is characterized as a central aspect of methodology rather than an object of study. Only by tracing the trail of the Septuagint translators is it possible to gain a reliable picture of the different translators and of the Hebrew Vorlage their work was based on. The themes dealt with in the individual essays range from the study of syntactical features of the Greek language used in the Septuagint to the quest for the correct understanding of the underlying Hebrew, from the overall description of the translation character of certain biblical books to the application of translation technical data in textual criticism of the Hebrew text, and from methodological questions to the discussion of theological interpretation by the translators, reflecting the ongoing discussion in the international field of Septuagint studies and representing a significant and distinctive critical position in it.
