Download or read book A New Sensing System for Pre excavation Subsurface Investigation for Tunnels in Rock Masses written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report includes a feasibility study and system design for an initial prototype of a sensing system for pre-excavation subsurface investigation for tunnels in rock. Tunnels in rock are very expensive, and costs often rise far above estimates when unforeseen problems are encountered during excavation. New techniques in rapid excavation technology, such as the development of boring machines, have increased the need for improved site investigation. Possibilities for a new sensing system that will provide more complete data on subsurface conditions were investigated. Favorable results obtained from high-resolution geophysical sensing in boreholes have been combined with improvements in drilling of long, horizontal, precise boreholes in order to provide an economical alternative to pilot tunnel for subsurface investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This single-volume thoroughly summarizes advances in the past several decades and emerging challenges in fundamental research in geotechnical engineering. These fundamental research frontiers are critically reviewed and described in details in lights of four grand challenges our society faces: climate adaptation, urban sustainability, energy and material resources, and global water resources. The specific areas critically reviewed, carefully examined, and envisioned are: sensing and measurement, soil properties and their physics roots, multiscale and multiphysics processes in soil, geochemical processes for resilient and sustainable geosystems, biological processes in geotechnics, unsaturated soil mechanics, coupled flow processes in soil, thermal processes in geotechnical engineering, and rock mechanics in the 21st century.

Download or read book Evolutionary and Revolutionary Technologies for Mining written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-04-14 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT) of the U. S. Department of Energy commissioned the National Research Council (NRC) to undertake a study on required technologies for the Mining Industries of the Future Program to complement information provided to the program by the National Mining Association. Subsequently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health also became a sponsor of this study, and the Statement of Task was expanded to include health and safety. The overall objectives of this study are: (a) to review available information on the U.S. mining industry; (b) to identify critical research and development needs related to the exploration, mining, and processing of coal, minerals, and metals; and (c) to examine the federal contribution to research and development in mining processes.
Download or read book Artificial Intelligence for Smart Cities and Villages Advanced Technologies Development and Challenges written by Megha Bhushan and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart cities and villages have enhanced the quality of lives of residents. Various computer-assisted technologies have been harnessed for the development of smart cities and villages in order to provide solutions for common and niche urban problems. The development of smart environments has been possible due on advances in computing power and artificial intelligence (AI) that have allowed the deployment of scalable technologies. Artificial Intelligence for Smart Cities and Smart Villages: Advanced Technologies, Development, and Challenges summarizes the role of AI in planning and designing smart solutions for urban and rural environments. This book is divided into three sections to impart a better understanding of the topics to readers. These sections are: 1) Demystifying smart cities and villages: A traditional perspective, 2) Smart innovations for rural lifestyle management solutions, and 3) Case studies. Through this book, readers will be able to understand various advanced technologies that are vital to the development of smart cities and villages. The book presents 15 chapters that present effective solutions to urban and rural challenges. Concepts highlighted in chapters include smart farms, indoor object classification systems, smart transportation, blockchains for medical information, humanoid robots for rural education, IoT devices for farming, and much more. This book is intended for undergraduate and graduate engineering students across all disciplines, security providers in the IT and related fields, and trainees working for infrastructure management companies. Researchers and consultants at all levels working in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, blockchain, network security, and cloud computing will also find the contents beneficial in planning projects involving smart environments.
Download or read book New Challenges and Opportunities in Physics Education written by Marilena Streit-Bianchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is invaluable for teachers and students in high school and junior college who struggle to understand the principles of modern physics and incorporate scientific methods in their lessons. It provides interactive and multidisciplinary approaches that will help prepare present and future generations to face the technological and social challenges they will face. Rather than using a unidirectional didactic approach, the authors - scientists, philosophers, communication experts, science historians and science education innovators - divide the book into two parts; the first part, “Communicating Contemporary Physics”, examines how new physics developments affect modern culture, while the second part, “Digital Challenges for Physics Learning”, covers physics education research using ICT, plus the experiences of classroom teachers and a range of ideas and projects to innovate physics and STEM teaching.
