Book The Reconstruction of White Southern Womanhood 1865 1895

Download or read book The Reconstruction of White Southern Womanhood 1865 1895 written by Jane Turner Censer and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2003-09-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This impressively researched book tells the important but little-known story of elite southern white women's successful quest for a measure of self-reliance and independence between antebellum strictures and the restored patriarchy of Jim Crow. Profusely illustrated with the experiences of fascinating women in Virginia and North Carolina, it presents a compelling new chapter in the history of American women and of the South. As were many ideas, notions of the ideal woman were in flux after the Civil War. While poverty added a harder edge to the search for a good marriage among some "southern belles," other privileged white women forged identities that challenged the belle model altogether. Their private and public writings from the 1870s and 1880s suggest a widespread ethic of autonomy. Sometimes that meant increased domestic skills born of the new reality of fewer servants. But women also owned and transmitted property, worked for pay, and even pursued long-term careers. Many found a voice in a plethora of new voluntary organizations, and some southern women attained national celebrity in the literary world, creating strong and capable heroines and mirroring an evolving view toward northern society. Yet even as elite southern women experimented with their roles, external forces and contradictions within their position were making their unprecedented attitudes and achievements socially untenable. During the 1890s, however, virulent racism and pressures to re-create a mythic South left these women caught between the revived image of the southern belle and the emerging emancipated woman. Just as the memoirs of southern white women have been key to understanding life during the Civil War, the writings of such women unlock the years of dramatic change that followed. Informed by myriad primary documents, Jane Turner Censer immerses us in the world of postwar southern women as they rethought and rebuilt themselves, their families, and their region during a brief but important period of relative freedom.

Book A Substitute Teacher Day Is Not a Free Day

Download or read book A Substitute Teacher Day Is Not a Free Day written by Morie M. Saffa and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains 9 Chapters. It begins with my experiences starting out as a young child growing up in a remote town in Sierra Leone to illiterate parents as the first in our family to attend a western style school system that had been introduced by the British colonialist.I narrated the experiences from the primary school years through secondary school and up to higher education level at Rutgers University here in the U.S.A. A lot of emphasis was provided on the draconian and abusive style of teaching that was meted in the elementary school systems those times. Subsequently my narrative continued with my experiences with the students in the American elementary educational system in the State of New Jersey where I became a Substitute Teacher. My American experience emphasized on the cultural differences and shock that I encountered from the condescending mentality held by the young American children about Africa and Africans, and how that mentality impeded my smooth entry into the world of substitute teaching in America. The American experience starts with some discomforting experiences at the university in terms of the imminent financial problems that almost destabilized my opportunity to continue my education in the United States. Then the story continued with my early substitute teaching experiences and how I got exposed to the idiosyncratic mentalities of the elementary and secondary school children who turned out to be more of a challenge than I bargained for including problems that resulted from the unpredictable expectations between me and those young but tough “American” kids. I provided detailed narratives of some of the culture encounters and clashes with the young kids when I met them for the first time. I went on to talk about my slow adjustment to the ways and expectations of the children and the system, in what I considered to be the unsung trials and tribulations of substitute teaching. The last two chapter provide for a comparative analysis and expectations of the American educational structure in terms of its apparent successes and failures and suggestions as to its improvement. I emphasized on the problems posed by students, teachers, parents, administrators and public officials like politicians and Substitute Teachers in classroom interactions that contribute to the general educational problems.I refuse to accept that, while being the richest and most advanced country in the world, we have to take a secondary position to any other country in the world in the quality of our educational capabilities. I advanced the argument that there is no reason why we can have the best higher educational institutions in the world, yet we cannot have the best elementary and secondary institutions in the world which are the sources from which the higher educational institutions are fed with students. My argument tries to highlight the possibility that certain aspects of our elementary and secondary school administrations and policies are to blame for the breach that exists in the continuum from elementary schools to the colleges and universities.

Book New Realism in Alice Munro s Fiction

Download or read book New Realism in Alice Munro s Fiction written by Li-Ping Geng and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book studies Alice Munro’s inheritance of and contribution to realism in fiction. Nobel Prize winner Munro follows the empirical tradition of the Enlightenment and draws on her life as a daughter, wife, mother, and professional writer while composing her fiction to reflect Canadian reality. She infuses her intellectual, moral, and aesthetic vision into her stories. This study analyzes her innovative realism in three respects: Her views on feminism and women’s issues, her firm yet sympathetic moral stance, and her reconstitution of traditional and modernist (post-modernist) methods of portraying character in time and space. Munro’s brand of realism is underpinned by her philosophical perception, her level-headed morality, her dialectical mind, and her versatile narrative style. This monograph, a voice from China, offers a deep philosophical reading of Munro. Students of the Canadian author, graduate or undergraduate, may find this book useful.

Download or read book Children of the Calling written by Eric Nelson Newberg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays, dedicated to Stan and Ruth Burgess, has been written by their colleagues and students to honor them as they retire after many years of distinguished service to Evangel University, Southwest Missouri State University, and Regent University. Several meanings can be subsumed under the title Children of the Calling. Stan and Ruth grew up in India, children of Pentecostal missionaries who felt they had "divine callings." They were influenced not only by the religious callings of their parents, but also by the cultural milieu of India. Though they did not personally take on board the specific missionary calling of their parents, they charted life maps that benefitted from the cross-cultural proficiencies developed in their childhoods in India, which to a large extent colored the influence they would have on their children, academic colleagues, and students, some of whom have submitted essays for this Festschrift. The diversity of subjects in this volume attests to the breadth of the scholarly work of Stan and Ruth Burgess. The first section narrates the major highlights of Stan and Ruth's academic biographies, the second presents pioneering studies of biblical studies and church history, and the third offers application-based research and personal reminiscences.

Download or read book Song of Rita Joe written by Rita Joe and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the enlightening story of an esteemed and eloquent Mi’kmaq woman whose message of “gentle persuasion” has enriched the life of a nation. Rita Joe is celebrated as a poet, an educator, and an ambassador. In 1989, she accepted the Order of Canada “on behalf of native people across the nation.” In this spirit she tells her story and, by her example, illustrates the experiences of an entire generation of aboriginal women in Canada. Song of Rita Joe is the story of Joe’s remarkable life: her education in an Indian residential school, her turbulent marriage, and the daily struggles within her family and community. It is the story of how Joe’s battles with racism, sexism, poverty, and personal demons became the catalyst for her first poems and allowed her to reclaim her aboriginal heritage. Today, her story continues: as she moves into old age, Joe writes that her lifelong spiritual quest is ever deepening.
