Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Upper Ordovician Rocks of Kentucky and Their Bryozoa Sir: - I have the honor to herewith submit for publication a report on the Upper Ordovician Rocks of Kentucky and their Bryozoa, by Professor John M. Sickles. This is a contribution toward the proper classification of our geological formations, which, as has been stated in another report, is necessary for an intelligent and adequate understanding of their economic values. In order, for example, that we may be able to estimate the depth below the surface at which a known oil or gas-bearing stratum may be found, we must be able to identify the beds seen at the surface and know their relations to other beds in the series of which the oil-beariug stratum forms a member. The identification of particular beds or a groupof bedsiuaseries of stratified rocks largely depends upon a knowledge of their characteristic fossils. There is less general knowledge of bryozoa than of other fossil forms, and yet they are often the only trustworthy means for discriminating some of the minor divisions of a formation series. The Surrey has been fortunate in having the services of Professor Nickles in dealing with that difficult feature of our classification studies, as they relate to the Upper Ordovician or Cincinnatian rocks. The general study of the Cincinnatian series is in the hands of Professor Aug. F. Foerste. His report, which will include many plates, is in course of preparation. It seems well to here notice two suggestions made by Professor Nickles. Calling attention to the fact that the Eden beds are the ones that constitute the least fertile of the Ordovician lands, he suggests that a systematic replanting of timber in the Eden areas would be of exceeding value to the State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Geology of Kentucky Such is the result of the comparison we have made; from which it appears, that a decided analogy exists between the fossils of the upper beds of the Falls, and those of the Devo nian strata of Europe, and that there are sufficient grounds for referring them to that geological epoch. We may next compare the species contained in the west ern Silurian and Devonian strata with their representatives in New York. The first table at the end of this article shows thirty-one spe cies occurring here, which may be considered as identical with New York forms. Of these it will be seen that the Clinton group is represent= ted by two species, the Niagara group by six, the Onon daga limestone by five, the Corniferous limestone by nine, the Hamilton group by eight, and the Genessee slate by two; while from the above comparison, the following formations occurring in New York, above the Clinton group, appear to have no representatives in the western States; namely: the Onondaga slate and water-lime groups, the Pentamerus lime stone, the Delthyris shaly limestone, Oriskany sandstone, Marcellus shale, Tully limestone, and the Portage and Che mung groups. The fossils in our strata, of which we have spoken, correspond precisely in the order of their superposition with those of New York. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Upper Ordovician Ecology of the Central Appalachians State and regional geologic maps provided the stratigraphic base for the study. The surveys of Butts Cloos Rodgers Stose Gray (1960) and Calver (1963) were supplemented by a number of quadrangle reports dealing with north-central Virginia and southern Pennsylvania. Other central Appala chian literature was surveyed for reference to any previously known exposures of fos siliferous Upper Ordovician rocks. Many of these previously published stratigraphic sections were adequate only in so far as they gave some indication of the overall thick ness of the fossiliferous upper Reedsville strata. The total number of localities visited amounted to more than 200, but fossils were present and collected from only 164. About specimens from these 164 fossiliferous exposures provided the basis for the description of 31 species (and/or genera) that are incorporated into a systematics section at the end of this paper. At over 90 localities fossils were collected from well defined stratigraphic horizons, approximately 35 additional localities served, to some degree, as accurate stratigraphic control; the remaining 40 localities were of more limited value, for the exact order and thickness of the various rock units were not clear at these exposures. In this study data were gathered concerning bedding fea tures, lithologic type and relative abundance of species. Tentative field identifications of both rock and fossil materials were checked in the laboratory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
