Book God Makes Angels and Navy Corpsmen

Download or read book God Makes Angels and Navy Corpsmen written by Joseph Barna and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was knocked down by a shell. As I found myself laying on my back, the half-full flamethrower tank pinning me to the ground, a North Korean soldier came at me with his bayonet. In his quilted suit, he seemed to come out of nowhere. I can still see his face and smell the garlic on his breath. As he lunged at me, I was able to turn, but he stabbed my upper left arm with his bayonet. I had a double-barrel shotgun taped on the arm of my flamethrower and gave him both barrels. I think I blew him in half. The battle kept going on around me. Weapons fire was all around me, and I heard other boys being hit and falling. I laid there feeling weak as blood from my deep wound seeped out on the Korean dirt. I must have been ready to blackout when I heard a familiar voice say, “Joe, if I don’t close up that wound, you’ll die.” (Paragraph italicized.) From growing up in a small Pennsylvania town, through Marine Corps boot camp and training, and finally, remembering and coping with buried memories decades later, Korean War combat veteran Joseph Barna recounts his life events that will put a tear in your eye and a smile on your face.

Book The Quiet Hero Collectors Edition The Untold Medal of Honor Story of George E Wahlen at the Battle for Iwo Jima

Download or read book The Quiet Hero Collectors Edition The Untold Medal of Honor Story of George E Wahlen at the Battle for Iwo Jima written by Gary W. Toyn and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience Iwo Jima, arguably the bloodiest battle of the modern era, from the perspective of an extraordinary battlefield medic, George Wahlen. As a Navy corpsman he was targeted by the Japanese, making his job of saving the injured even that much more deadly. How he saved so many lives is among the many mysteries of his incredible story. After earning three purple hearts in a matter of days, witnesses of Wahlen's heroics remain dumbfounded that he actually survived. For his actions he was awarded the Medal of Honor, America's highest military honor. But after the war, he told no one about the medal. Even his wife didn't know he was a national hero for many years after their marriage. For more than six decades he has kept the details of his story to himself, but family and friends have since convinced him to tell the gritty details of his war-time experience. His story is told using over 180 rare and unpublished photographs, many of which were previously censored for being too graphic for public sensitivities. As many now learn of Wahlen's survival, sacrifice and bravery, his story is considered among the most dramatic accounts of heroism in U.S. military history.

Book Doc The Adventures of a Hospital Corpsman

Download or read book Doc The Adventures of a Hospital Corpsman written by Hugh Sullivan and published by Hellgate Press. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DOC! is the story of Hugh Sullivan, who began his military career in 1961 when he enlisted in the South Carolina National Guard. Later that year, he joined the U.S. Navy in order to "escape the cotton mill way of life" that awaited most of the young men who grew up in Hugh's town. Trained as a hospital corpsman, Hugh-or "Doc" as Navy corpsmen are often called-served two tours in Vietnam in 1965 and again in 1966. Afterwards, he made a career out of the Navy eventually retiring after thirty-nine years active duty with the rank of captain and an impressive collection of medals and awards. What happened in between enlistment and retirement-including his time served during Operation Desert Storm in the 1990s-is a story of perseverance and determination, and a lesson in how to succeed in the military despite the politics and egos one encounters on the way up through the ranks.

Book My Untold Stories

Download or read book My Untold Stories written by Tom Langevin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-12-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a storybook collection of twenty-two anecdotes reflecting the memories throughout the life of a ninety-eight-year-old Christian gentleman. It is a blend of famous biographies with autobiographical overtones. Some are humorous, like “A Christmas Story” and “A Colorado Fishing Trip.” Some are humanistic, like “A Trip to Remember” and “Elba in the Storm.” And five of the stories deal with association with the rich and famous in actor Ray Bolger, President Harry Truman, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, news anchor Bill Moyers, and comedian/actor Bob Hope, to name a few. There is no rhyme or reason to these stories, just off-the-cuff remembrances from a well-established man who has lived and just about seen it all.
