Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Texas Record, Vol. 9: June 1, 1909 In behalf of the students of the University of Texas, it is my pleasure to Speak briefly of the late Judge James B. Clark as the students knew and understood him. The hour of our deepest mourning has passed, and time has softened, in some degree, the grief that overwhelmed us. We can now calmly lay aside our sorrow for the moment, and bear impartial testimony to the worth of him who gave the last twenty-five years of his life to the students of this institution. Judge Clark was bv birth and training a college man. His father, a respected and honored citizen of North Carolina, believed in edu cation as a training for that higher and more perfect citizenship. He accordingly gave to his son an Opportunity early in life to enter college. Judge Clark entered Franklin College at the age of twelve, and from there he went to Harvard University. During his course at Harvard. He was universally loved and respected as a student and a friend. This was evidenced by the fact that he was chosen to serve as class orator on the day of his graduation. A duty which he performed with marked credit to himself and with honor to his class, The spirit of earnestness and loyaltv which characterized that address so impressed his classmates that, even now, the few re maining members of his class refer to it as the event which marked the beginning of their loyalty to Harvard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Texas Record, Vol. 3: June, 1901 For the better part of. A century the efforts of the Spanish gov ernment to colonize Texas by Spaniards or Mexicans had failed of practical success. When the young Republic of Mexico, fresh from helds of victorious contest for independence, opened its por tals to foreign emigration of non - Spanish descent, this measure brought to Texas, then a political division of Mexico, emigrants from all parts of the United States on the North and, to a limited extent from England and Germany. Thus, for the first time in the history of this continent, there entered into spanish-america in large numbers and as citizens thereof that Virile race of men before which centuries ago the ancient renown and disciplined valor of Roman legions broke in irretrievable defeat, and which from its earliest appearances in the arena of history asserted and practiced, even in the primeval forest of Germany, the great right of sclf - government as the basic principle of all civil and political institutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Texas Record, Vol. 10: No. 2; July 15, 1910 We have never taken an inventory of our national resources. We are in the position of a man who, when bequeathed an estate, has gone on spending his money freely, and has never taken the trouble to ask what his capital is. Now, however, we are beginning to realize that the resources mav not be limitless; that we must. Know what we have to depend on, and how long we can. Make it last. There are four kinds of resources: our minerals, forests, water powers, and soil. Of all of our mineral resources, coal is the most import-ant. Until about the middle of the Nineteenth Century we had scarcely begun to draw upon this resource; we had only scratched the surface, so to speak. But at the end of the first decade in this century, it will be found that, in the ten years, we have taken out more coal than in all the preceding decades to gether, just as each of the two decades previous was greatly in ex cess of the ten years before them. Download or read book Bulletin of the University of Texas Number 115 Vol 9 written by University of Texas and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the University of Texas Number 115, Vol. 9: The University of Texas Record The name of the Conference for Education in Texas declares its mission. This society is not a douma, created to execute policies predetermined by external authority; it is a conference, which hopes that, through investigation and discussion in which its entire membership is to share, the ideals, content, and method of its work are to be established and maintained. Its strength is to rest upon the intelligence of its individual members, and the common stock of their reason is to fix the limits of its undertakings and its progress. Conference as it is, it is under bond to exercise its powers in the interest of the general welfare. If that spirit which is absolutely necessary to the development of any democratic institution once he lost, this Conference will hasten to a deserved, a foredoomed, and an inglorious end. It is a Conference for Education, and, therefore, it will consider only questions pertaining to that field of human activity. Other fields are important - vastly important: but this association can be true to its name and preserve the unity of its followers by holding aloft but one banner, and that the banner of Education. This banner, however, must be broad enough to be recognized as the rallying symbol by all those interested, whether directly or indirectly, in the many varying phases of education. Book C C Slaughter

Download or read book C C Slaughter written by David J. Murrah and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born during the infant years of the Texas Republic, C. C. Slaughter (1837–1919) participated in the development of the southwestern cattle industry from its pioneer stages to the modern era. Trail driver, Texas Ranger, banker, philanthropist, and cattleman, he was one of America’s most famous ranchers. David J. Murrah’s biography of Slaughter, now available in paperback, still stands as the definitive account of this well-known figure in Southwest history. A pioneer in West Texas ranching, Slaughter increased his holdings from 1877 to 1905 to include more than half a million acres of land and 40,000 head of cattle. At one time “Slaughter country” stretched from a few miles north of Big Spring, Texas, northwestward two hundred miles to the New Mexico border west of Lubbock. His father, brothers, and sons rode the crest of his popularity, and the Slaughter name became a household word in the Southwest. In 1873—almost ten years before the “beef bonanza” on the open range made many Texas cattlemen rich—C. C. Slaughter was heralded by a Dallas newspaper as the “Cattle King of Texas.” Among the first of the West Texas cattlemen to make extensive use of barbed wire and windmills, Slaughter introduced new and improved cattle breeds to West Texas. In his later years, greatly influenced by Baptist minister George W. Truett of Dallas, Slaughter became a major contributor to the work of the Baptist church in Texas. He substantially supported Baylor University and was a cofounder of the Baptist Education Commission and Dallas’s Baylor Hospital. Slaughter also cofounded the Texas Cattle Raisers’ Association (1877) and the American National Bank of Dallas (1884), which through subsequent mergers became the First National Bank. His banking career made him one of Dallas’s leading citizens, and at times he owned vast holdings of downtown Dallas property.
