This book was released on 2016-11-13 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Missouri Studies, Vol. 1 Hat musical theory, if it is to be regarded as a scientific theory, must be psychological, need hardly be emphasized. No theory of any department of aesthetics can be other than psychological and musical theory is a department of aesthetics. Neither the physicist nor the physiologist can prove by physical or physiological laws, why we must enjoy certain combinations of tones. It is the psychologist's task to determine the aesthetic laws which describe the subjective as well as objective conditions of aesthetic enjoyment. That physical and physiological concepts are used in the formulation of these laws, is a matter of course. But the physical and physiological concepts cannot be the only constituents; psychological concepts must also enter into these laws. The aesthetic significance of the former consists only in their relation to psychological concepts. Aestheticians have often overlooked this fact, particularly with respect to music. Some have tried to demonstrate that we must enjoy certain combinations of tones, because vibrating bodies produce overtones. Others have demonstrated the same proposi tion by means of physiological facts. Such methods, in aesthetics, are metaphysical, not scientific. The aesthetician's task is to de termine that - not why - enjoyment of combinations of tones de pends upon objective and subjective conditions, which may be - no one can tell a priori - psychological or partly psychological, partly physiological and partly physical. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Missouri Studies, Vol. 1 The restriction of this study to the production of men's and children's out-side wearing apparel and to women's cloaks is not based wholly on empirical grounds. The work in these branches is of a fairly homogeneous character and the problems involved arise out of the peculiar circumstances and surroundings to be found associated with this industry. There is also justification for restricting the study to New York, only making mention of other centers in so far as they are able to throw light on the conditions in that city. New York was the pioneer in the clothing industry and it occupies to-day a transcendent position in the industry. The conditions in the industry in New York are fairly typical of the rest of the country and social regulation has been worked out to a much fuller extent there. Confining this study to branches forming a well defined group and restricting it to a rather limited field permits of greater detail and gives a definiteness which could not be attained in a wider survey. In such a study - in which much of the data must be gotten by personal work in the field - the writer has put himself under obligations to many persons, and it is quite beyond his ability to do more than render a general acknowledgment of such obligations. From a candid apprehension that the enlargement of our territory would endanger our Union. But can you limit the extent to which the federative principle may operate effectively? The larger our association, the less will it be shaken by local passions; and in any view IS it not bet ter that the opposite bank of the Mississippi should be settled by our own brethren and children than by strangers of another family? With which shall we be most likely to live in harmony and friendly intercourse? Sarand Inaugural Address; 1805. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Lectures Delivered in the Chapel of the University of the State of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, 1878-79, Vol. 1: Course II Believing that the threefold relation existing be tween themselves, the students under their care and the state, demanded something more than the ordinary class room work at their hands, the members of the Faculty of the University of Missouri two years ago determined to prepare a series of lectures, illustrative of the special ties of the various departments, and sufficiently popular in character to be attractive not only to the undergrad nates, but also to the public at large. The first course, delivered in the University Chapel during the winter of 1877-78, was pronounced so successful that the Faculty felt encouraged to enter upon a second, and this, in turn, was received with indications of popular approval so flattering in character that it was resolved to publish the entire second series. This volume is the result of that determination. The lectures herein contained, while de signed primarily for the students of the University, nev ertheless it is believed do not lack certain elements of popularity which render them, at least in some de gree, adapted to the wants of the reading public. To that public this book is now presented with the hope that the original purpose of the lectures will be held in remembrance, and with the expectation that succeeding volumes will prox e more worthy of the appreciation al readv so kindly manifested by the friends of the Univer sity m behalf of this first eflbrt.
