Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Kansas Science Bulletin, 1978-1980, Vol. 51: Nos. 12-25 Observations and collections made in the two study areas described. Collections were made from May 1974 to September 1975 as Often as time permitted. Through out the peak-emergence periods of adult flies, collections were conducted on alter nate days at the Breidenthal Reserve and the Natural History Reservation. At first all varieties of habitats were searched. Later, searches were concentrated on sev eral specific sites believed to represent the principal types Of crane fly habitats. Net sweeping was the basic method of collecting. All possible hiding places were explored with the net. Specimens were taken either at their resting Site, or in the air as they fled. No more than 20 speci mens per species were captured at each habitat on each trip. All flies caught by net were mounted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Kansas Science Bulletin, Vol. 16: Devoted to the Publication of the Results of Research by Members of the University of Kansas Reliable methods for the identification and classification of bacteria have been eagerly sought by many investigators. Kendall (1923) says, "We are not so much interested in what bacteria are as in what they do." Morphological classification has been largely superseded by physiological classification. It has been found that the cultural reactions of bacteria are fairly stable and that most organisms can be divided into groups by means of these reactions. As the science of immunology has developed it has been found that the members of these groups, although giving identical cultural reactions, can be separated into subgroups by means of serological tests. A case in point is that of the pneumococcus group. All pneumococci give certain definite cultural reactions, but serological tests separate these apparently identical organisms into four sharply defined groups. Of late years studies on streptococci, staphylococci, B. dyscnterice, B. diphtherke and others have shown that organisms may be grouped by means of cultural reactions and these groups further subdivided by serological reactions. The stability of these cultural and serological reactions has an important bearing on their use in the identification of organisms. Variations in physiological and antigenic properties of many organisms have been reported. The typhoid group has usually been considered homogeneous in cultural and antigenic reactions, and if this were true it would seem to differ sharply from the majority of other organisms. Enough variation, however, has been reported by Hooke (1916), Weiss (1917), Teague and McWilliams (1919), Rotky (1921), and others, to give point to an intensive study of several strains of B. typhosus. This work was accordingly undertaken. Part I deals with a study of the antigenic differences exhibited by strains of B. typhosus. i and the relation of such antigenic differences to any cultural peculiarities present. Part II deals with the effect of hydrogen-ion concentration on the metabolism of these same strains; their dextrose metabolism and viability, and the correlation of these reactions with their antigenic characters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Kansas Science Bulletin, Vol. 43: Devoted to Publication of the Results of Research by Members of the University of Kansas Terrestrial poikilotherms at temperate latitudes necessarily are adapted to much wider fluctuations in external conditions than are aquatic poikilotherms. Therefore, various phases of nor mal behavior in reptiles and amphibians are not evoked under uniform laboratory conditions; lizards that regulate temperatures of their bodies by behavioral mechanisms are especially affected by laboratory conditions. Studies in the laboratory, of behavior of lizards that practice thermo-regulation are inconclusive as con cerns natural existence unless conditions of the normal habitat are duplicated or unless the study is accompanied by field observa tions. My study emphasized behavior of racerunners in the Wild, although detailed observations and experiments were made upon captives kept under conditions similar to those of the natural habitat.
