Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States It is now nearly four hundred years Since these grounds were first fished upon by Europeans, and their resources are still unfailing; but the fishing interests have been mainly transferred to the New World, France alone of European countries having continued to send fishing vessels across the Atlantic down to 1880. Since then, however, the Portuguese have begun to exhibit some activity in connection with the cod fishery of the Grand Bank, and in the Spring and sum mer of 1885 bought several New England fishing schooners and fitted out others from home ports. Their voyages proving generally successful, they have added more vessels to their fishing fleet during the latter part of this year, and it is quite possible that, in the course of a few seasons. Book A History of the New England Fisheries

Download or read book A History of the New England Fisheries written by Raymond McFarland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the New England Fisheries: With Maps There is no industry in America that antedates the fisheries. Fishermen from France, Spain, Portugal and England frequented the banks of Newfoundland before any trade relations between the Old and the New World came into existence. The codfishery of the New England coast was carried on many years previous to the establishment of a permanent English colony in our country. Voyages of exploration and settlement to New England were prompted by reports of the valuable fishing grounds lying between Cape Cod and Cape Sable. With the permanent settlement of New England the fisheries became the chief industry of the people, and continued down to the Revolution to be a main source of wealth, and to supply the principal article of trade between the merchants of New England and those of the West Indies and Europe. The fisheries of New England were of especial importance during the colonial period and still continue to be of greater economic importance than at any previous period of our history; yet the industry, with the exception of the whale fishery, has no literature that adequately sets forth its history and value. There are several good accounts of the whale fishery; but the story of the cod and mackerel and inshore fisheries does not appear to have been an attractive field to writers. The accounts we have of the history and of the methods of the fisheries have been prompted largely by government inquiry and exist as government reports. Book Fisheries of the United States 1908 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fisheries of the United States 1908 Classic Reprint written by U. S. Department of Commerce and Labor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fisheries of the United States, 1908 Three schedules were used in securing the data one for the shore and boat fisheries, one for the vessel fisheries, and one for the canning and packing houses. The tables relating to the fisheries were prepared from the information secured on the first two schedules mentioned above. In the statistical presentation the entire country is divided into five main divisions, as follows: Atlantic coast, Gulf of Mexico, Pacific coast, Great Lakes, and the Mississippi River and its tributaries. In connection with this division, which corresponds, generally speak ing, to the principal bodies of water which bound the greater part of the United States and the large river system which occupies the great central valley, it will be noted that a few states have fisheries in more than one division, as, for example, New York and Pennsyl vania, which have fisheries in both the Atlantic coast and the Great Lakes divisions; Florida, which has fish eries on the Atlantic coast and also on the Gulf of Mexico; and Louisiana, which is represented in the Gulf fisheries as well as in those of the Mississippi. For purposes of comparison with previous statistics, the fisheries of the Atlantic coast are shown in a few tables in three divisions - those of the New England states, the Middle Atlantic states, and the South Atlantic states, respectively. 'the last - named group includes North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and the east coast of Florida, and the Middle Atlantic division, all the Atlantic coast states from New York to Virginia, inclu sive. In most of the states a distribution has been made according to the waters in which fishing was prosecuted; thus in Wisconsin separate statistics are presented for the fisheries of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and the Mississippi River and its tributaries. In Washington and in Oregon the fisheries of the Co lumbia River and its tributaries have been classed as a separate district, all the other waters in each of these states constituting a single district. In New York there are four divisions or fishing districts - Long Island Sound, all other waters of the Atlantic coast, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. On account of their importance, separate statistics are also given for the fisheries of Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, which include portions of the fisheries of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, and the Susquehanna River fisheries of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food From the Sea: Fish and Shellfish of New England Millions of Americans are developing new wartime food habits trying foods they once neglected, turning to alternates for long familiar products. For every one of the ten fish or shellfish that make up more than four/fifths of New England's catch there are seven species little known or utilized, many of which could pro vide tasty and nutritious foods. Turning to these under/utilized species will conserve food resources by lifting the burden of over' exploitation from such fishes as cod and haddock and will augment dwindling supplies of protein foods. Exploring the seafood markets for unfamiliar species rewards the housewife and her family with delightful taste surprises, for scarcely any other class of food offers so great a variety, so rich an Opportunity for mealtime adventures. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of the Fishery Industries of the United States and the Work of the U. S. Fish Commission Improvements in the manufacture of fish-oil and guano, in the production of which, as also in that of medicinal oil, steam is almost universally used, have been numerous and important. The clean and attractive packages in which canned, dried, smoked, and pickled fish are now exposed for sale led also to the more extensive use of fish for food. The fish shop of to-day is not so repulsive as of old to sight and smell. Salt codfish is no longer sent to the best markets in bulk, and more than two thousand men, women, and children are now employed in removing skin and bone and packing the fish in neatly cut strips in boxes or in tin-foil covered packages of definite size. In many inland districts the introduction of boneless dried fish in boxes and pickled fish in tins has led to increase of sales, estimated by competent authority as three-fold - this within a period of four years. Book American Fishes

Download or read book American Fishes written by G. Brown Goode and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Fishes: A Popular Treatise Upon the Game and Food Fishes of North America, With Especial Reference to Habits and Methods of Capture The work was the summary of the observations and reports Of a large corps of experts in ichthyology as well as fisheries and economics, originally employed by the Census Bureau. It contained a fund of information that could not be found in any other work accessible to the general public, and it still holds that place. Nevertheless, in the lapse of time, many changes had been made in the nomenclature of the species, not a few Species had been added, and several important groups of fishes that had been neglected required attention. The data in the work related to two independent subjects: one, the life history or habits of the Species; the other, the statistics of the fisheries. The former has not changed, and what was true fifteen years ago is still true the latter is constantly changing, but the relative values of the differ ent fisheries have not greatly varied. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fish and Shellfish of the Middle Atlantic Coast Atlantic fisheries are carried on by individual fishermen or by small associations of fishermen. In this respect they contrast sharply with the fisheries of New England and the Pacific Coast, where the typical operating unit is a large company, with financial stability and large re sources of material and equipment. The only important exceptions to the lack of organization in the Mid dle Atlantic area are the menhaden fishery, dominated by several large companies owning chains of fac tories and many boats, and the oyster industry of Long Island Sound and sections of New Jersey and Virginia. The pound net fish eries, as a rule, are carried on by fishermen organized into groups of some 8126. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Fishes of North Carolina Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fishes of North Carolina Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Hugh M. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fishes of North Carolina, Vol. 2 The following report on The Fishes of North Carolina has been prepared to meet the numerous inquiries that are constantly being received by the Geological and Economic Survey concerning the fishes found in the different waters of the State. It has been the desire of the State Geologist to awaken an increased interest in the local fishes, and to give to the people of North Carolina and to others a more accurate knowledge of the abundance, distribution, habits, migrations, spawning, food value, etc., of the fishes, in the belief that such knowledge will lead to a fuller realization of the economic importance of the fishery resources of the State. It is desirable also that there be created a deeper interest in the welfare of both fishes and fishermen, and a better understanding of the condition and needs of the fishing industry, with a view to placing this important branch on a permanent basis and making it yield an increasing revenue to both State and people. In this report there is an account of every fish that has been ascertained to inhabit the fresh, brackish, or salt waters of North Carolina. All local names by which the fishes are known are recorded, and diagnostic descriptions are given that are often based on local specimens. Colored plates or text cuts representing a very large number of the species have been provided. While the chief aim in preparing the report has been to make it of practical usefulness to the fishing interests, the scientific aspects of the subject have not been neglected, and the work will be found to have a value to ichthyologists and to zoologists in general. The report is particularly useful in that it affords a means of identifying any fish that may be taken in State waters. The artificial keys are based on external characters that commercial fishermen and anglers may readily appreciate; and the copious index of common names gives a further clue to all the species whose size makes them objects of capture. In the preparation of this work the assistance and knowledge of many local people have been availed of, and to these Dr. Smith makes acknowledgment in his introduction and text. It is hoped that this volume will be the means of creating such an interest in the fisheries that suitable laws for their protection may be enacted as needed, and that the State officers charged with the administration of the fisheries may have the sympathy and cooperation of all citizens. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fisheries of the North Sea Reader understand the ramifications of a business which is not easily understood by the interested spectator for conditions are constantly changing, and there is no resemblance between our modern methods of fishing and those in vogue thirty years ago. In this account there is necessarily much that will not be new to those who are engaged in the industry but SO great are the possibilities and opportunities for future development, and so pressing is the need for taking full advantage Of our magnificent heritage of the sea, that the public ought to be better informed, or many grave mistakes will be made. Already several pronounced politicians have inaugurated a body called the Empire Resources Development Committee. These men would like to see the State control the industry, with a view to making it a Government monopoly and diverting the profits into the Treasury. Anyone who understands the industry knows this to be both impracticable and unjust. The seas do not belong to the British Empire any more than they do to Germany or Norway.
