Download or read book There Ain t No Black in the Union Jack written by Paul Gilroy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic book is a powerful indictment of contemporary attitudes to race. By accusing British intellectuals and politicians on both sides of the political divide of refusing to take race seriously, Paul Gilroy caused immediate uproar when this book was first published in 1987. A brilliant and explosive exploration of racial discourses, There Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack provided a powerful new direction for race relations in Britain. Still dynamite today and as relevant as ever, this Routledge Classics edition includes a new introduction by the author.

Book excerpt: It is generally assumed that the language of patriotism and national identity belongs to the political right, but the emergence of socialism in the 1880s shows clearly that the left also drew on such ideas in its formative years to legitimate a particular form of socialism, one presented as a restoration of an English past lost to industrial capitalism. The First World War dealt a severe blow to this radical patriotism: though the anti-war left continued to use radical patriotic language in the early years, the war degraded patriotism generally, while the Russian Revolution gave internationalism a new focus, and also threatened the dominant concept of British socialism. Moderate Labour sought to prove their fitness to govern, and concentrated on the `national interest' rather than oppositional Englishness, while the left of the movement looked to Soviet Russia rather than the English past for models for a future socialist society. PAUL WARD is lecturer in Modern British History at Royal Holloway, University of London, and Visiting Lecturer at the University of Westminster.

Book The Union Jack

  • Author : Imre Kertész
  • Publisher : Melville House
  • Release : 2013-07-09
  • ISBN : 1612193285
  • Pages : 50 pages

Download or read book The Union Jack written by Imre Kertész and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It was...unnecessary for me to fret about who the murderer was: Everybody was." A haunting, never-before-translated, autobiographical novella by the 2002 Nobel Prize winner. An unnamed narrator recounts a simple anecdote, his sighting of the Union Jack—the British Flag—during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, in the few days preceding the uprising's brutal repression by the Soviet army. In the telling, partly a digressive meditation on "the absurd order of chance," he recalls his youthful self, and the epiphanies of his intellectual and spiritual awakening—an awakening to a kind of radical subjectivity. In his Nobel address Kertesz remembered: "I, on a lovely spring day in 1955, suddenly came to the realization that there exists only one reality, and that is me, my own life, this fragile gift bestowed for an uncertain time, which had been seized, expropriated by alien forces, and circumscribed, marked up, branded—and which I had to take back from 'History', this dreadful Moloch, because it was mine and mine alone..." The Contemporary Art of the Novella series is designed to highlight work by major authors from around the world. In most instances, as with Imre Kertész, it showcases work never before published; in others, books are reprised that should never have gone out of print. It is intended that the series feature many well-known authors and some exciting new discoveries. And as with the original series, The Art of the Novella, each book is a beautifully packaged and inexpensive volume meant to celebrate the form and its practitioners.

Book Flying Colours

Download or read book Flying Colours written by Robert G Fresson and published by Cicada Books. This book was released on 2020-05-16 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring the patterns, colours and crests of flags, we can learn all about the histories and aspirations of the countries they represent. Did you know that the flag of Nepal is the only one with more than four sides? Or that the flag of Mozambique features a book, a hoe and an AK47? Find out the difference between the flag of Chad and the flag of Romania (spoiler: there is none), and why the Union Jack is assymetrical. Robert G Fresson’s meticulous, vintage-inflected illustrations provide a refreshingly elegant insight into the fascinating world of vexillology.
