Book excerpt: The true story of two mass-casualty incidents that occurred within days of each other at a US Air Force base. Using the words of the people who experienced the tragedies, the book provides in-depth look at the before, during and after of a preventable active-shooter incident and an avoidable fatal plane crash. The base psychiatrist knew the airman was dangerous. “This is the kind of patient who … one day … he’s going to come back and kill you.” Aircrews knew the rogue pilot was dangerous. “We predicted the worst air-show disaster in history when we found out that he was gonna fly.” Written by Andy Brown, the man who ended the killing spree, the result of more than seven years of research. Brown "masterfully weaves" the two stories together in a powerful narrative. He also reveals the preparations he made that enabled him to end a pistol-versus-rifle gunfight with a 70 yard shot from his handgun. Part true crime, part law-enforcement biography memoir and part military history. Warnings Unheeded is presented in an objective style that shows what can happen when authorities become complacent, when the precursors of violence are ignored and the lessons from history are forgotten.

Book The Unheeded Warning and 17 Years Later 2007 2024

This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume The Unheeded Warning combines the lived experience of public warning by this author against the mounting violence of radical Muslim immigrants into Australia, and the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 Hamas Massacre in Israel that shook the world. The radical Muslim threat is manifested against both the local Aussie Jewry and its support for Israel, as well as against the Western Civilization the radical Muslims are determined to alter to their tune. These immigrants have been trying the same tactics worldwide, including in Europe and in America. This trend has existed for the last few decades in the entire Western world, but exploded into unprecedented peaks of hatred, violence, and bigotry on the morning of the October 7 massacre, launched by Hamas from Gaza into adjacent Israeli territory, which resulted in the murder of 1,300 Israeli civilians in their beds, and the criminal abduction of 240 more into Gaza as hostages for blackmail that they and the active mediators of a “deal” shamelessly misname as “negotiations” for “exchange of prisoners.” The worldwide Muslim radical movement that manifests itself, especially on university campuses across the West, is largely aided by old local antisemites, both on the Right and the Left.

Book excerpt: From President Bill Clinton's recommended reading list Publishers Weekly Bestseller Warnings is the story of the future of national security, threatening technologies, the U.S. economy, and possibly the fate of civilization. In Greek mythology Cassandra foresaw calamities, but was cursed by the gods to be ignored. Modern-day Cassandras clearly predicted the disasters of Katrina, Fukushima, the Great Recession, the rise of ISIS, the spread of viruses and many more. Like the mythological Cassandra, they were ignored. There are others right now warning of impending disasters—from cyber attacks to pandemics—but how do we know which warnings are likely to be right? Through riveting explorations in a variety of fields, the authors—both accomplished CEOs and White House National Security Council veterans—discover a method to separate the accurate Cassandras from the crazy doomsayers. They then investigate the experts who today are warning of future disasters: the threats from artificial intelligence, bio-hacking, malware attacks, and more, and whose calls are not being heeded. Clarke’s and Eddy’s penetrating insights are essential for any person, any business, or any government that doesn’t want to be a blind victim of tomorrow’s catastrophe.

Book The Ministry of Truth

Download or read book The Ministry of Truth written by Dorian Lynskey and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rich and compelling. . .Lynskey’s account of the reach of 1984 is revelatory.” --George Packer, The Atlantic An authoritative, wide-ranging, and incredibly timely history of 1984--its literary sources, its composition by Orwell, its deep and lasting effect on the Cold War, and its vast influence throughout world culture at every level, from high to pop. 1984 isn't just a novel; it's a key to understanding the modern world. George Orwell's final work is a treasure chest of ideas and memes--Big Brother, the Thought Police, Doublethink, Newspeak, 2+2=5--that gain potency with every year. Particularly in 2016, when the election of Donald Trump made it a bestseller ("Ministry of Alternative Facts," anyone?). Its influence has morphed endlessly into novels (The Handmaid's Tale), films (Brazil), television shows (V for Vendetta), rock albums (Diamond Dogs), commercials (Apple), even reality TV (Big Brother). The Ministry of Truth is the first book that fully examines the epochal and cultural event that is 1984 in all its aspects: its roots in the utopian and dystopian literature that preceded it; the personal experiences in wartime Great Britain that Orwell drew on as he struggled to finish his masterpiece in his dying days; and the political and cultural phenomena that the novel ignited at once upon publication and that far from subsiding, have only grown over the decades. It explains how fiction history informs fiction and how fiction explains history.

Book True Warnings and False Alarms

Download or read book True Warnings and False Alarms written by Allan Mazur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given time, scientists reach consensus about the truth or falsity of a wide range of alleged hazards. Today, there is broad agreement that CFCs destroy stratospheric ozone. On the other hand, research does not support claims that electromagnetic fields from transmission lines cause a noticeable increase of leukemia. But new allegations continuously arise. Are manufactured chemicals in the environment distorting normal hormonal processes in our bodies? Are genetically modified foods a cause for concern? Addressing one of the most vexing problems in risk policy, Allan Mazur asks how we can tell, at an early stage, how seriously we should take a new warning. To identify hallmarks that could help predict the truth or falsity of an alleged hazard, Mazur analyzes 31 health warnings raised during the 1950s and 1960s about diverse technologies, including fluoridation, DDT, cyclamate, nuclear weapons testing, and birth control pills. Among his considerations are the initial source of an alarm, the biases held by its primary 'sponsors,' and the type of media coverage it receives. With 30 to 50 years of hindsight, he identifies characteristics - apparent from the outset of a controversy - that most effectively distinguish true warnings from false alarms. Early recognition and a timely response to a genuine hazard are important to protect our environment, health, and economic well-being. But if we act quickly and a warning turns out to be false, money is wasted, people are needlessly frightened, regulators lose credibility, and our ability to appropriately handle the next set of risks is compromised. Mazur's findings do not provide certainty about which of today's warnings will prove true and which will prove false. But they do help us to make informed judgments about where it is best and most reasonable to direct our worries and resources.
