Book The Disorder of Political Inquiry

Download or read book The Disorder of Political Inquiry written by Keith Topper and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past several years two academic controversies have migrated from the classrooms and courtyards of college and university campuses to the front pages of national and international newspapers: Alan Sokal’s hoax, published in the journal Social Text, and the self-named movement, “Perestroika,” that recently emerged within the discipline of political science. Representing radically different analytical perspectives, these two incidents provoked wide controversy precisely because they brought into sharp relief a public crisis in the social sciences today, one that raises troubling questions about the relationship between science and political knowledge, and about the nature of objectivity, truth, and meaningful inquiry in the social sciences. In this provocative and timely book, Keith Topper investigates the key questions raised by these and other interventions in the “social science wars” and offers unique solutions to them. Engaging the work of thinkers such as Richard Rorty, Charles Taylor, Pierre Bourdieu, Roy Bhaskar, and Hannah Arendt, as well as recent literature in political science and the history and philosophy of science, Topper proposes a pluralist, normative, and broadly pragmatist conception of political inquiry, one that is analytically rigorous yet alive to the notorious vagaries, idiosyncrasies, and messy uncertainties of political life.

Book Complicity and the Law of State Responsibility

Download or read book Complicity and the Law of State Responsibility written by Helmut Philipp Aust and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This systematic analysis of State complicity in international law focuses on the rules of State responsibility. Combining a theoretical perspective on complicity based on the concept of the international rule of law with a thorough analysis of international practice, Helmut Philipp Aust establishes what forms of support for wrongful conduct entail responsibility of complicit States and sheds light on the consequences of complicity in terms of reparation and implementation. Furthermore, he highlights how international law provides for varying degrees of responsibility in cases of complicity, depending on whether peremptory norms have been violated or special subject areas such as the law of collective security are involved. The book shows that the concept of State complicity is firmly grounded in international law, and that the international rule of law may serve as a conceptual paradigm for today's international legal order.

Book The Pearls That Were His Eyes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cittàvecchio - the Old City. An Age of Reason, so the Lords of the City say, from behind their elegant masks. Superstition has no place in modern Cittàvecchio; we have moved beyond our dark past. But in the flooded streets and narrow, fogbound alleyways of the old Imperial capital, a past both feared and secretly yearned for may not have given up its grip entirely - as dissent against the Duke spreads through the populace and bloody murders stir up the poor and dispossessed, the city is reminded once more that where there is superstition, there is usually good reason why - and that even in an Age of Reason, there are things in the dark which wait only for an opportunity to crawl once more into the light. As Cittàvecchio's festival week draws closer it becomes more and more obvious that those who plot in secret are themselves being manipulated and manoeuvered - and those doing the maniuplating might seek, not a new government, but a return to a much older one...

  • Author : Mark R. Wheeler
  • Publisher : SUNY Press
  • Release : 2019-12-15
  • ISBN : 143847685X
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book Being Measured written by Mark R. Wheeler and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances an interpretation of Aristotle’s theory of truth in terms of accurate measurement. On the basis of careful textual exegesis and philosophical analysis of Aristotle’s Metaphysics, Mark R. Wheeler offers a groundbreaking interpretation of Aristotle’s theory of truth in terms of measurement. Wheeler demonstrates that Aristotle’s investigation of truth and falsehood in the Metaphysics is rigorously methodical, that Aristotle’s conceptions of truth contribute to the main lines of thought in the treatise, and that the Metaphysics, taken as a whole, contributes fundamentally to Aristotle’s theory of truth. Wheeler provides not only an excellent introduction to the main problems in the theory of truth but also provides contemporary truth theorists with a rigorous explanation of Aristotle’s theory of truth. “Wheeler’s book constitutes a major contribution to the scholarship on Aristotle’s theory of truth and falsehood. The book offers much in terms of how to read the Metaphysics itself, and Wheeler’s interpretation will strike some as defending a rather controversial and complex thesis centered around the idea that the Metaphysics ought to be read as a more systematically and philosophically unified document with the articulation of a robust theory of truth at the center of the entire work. Wheeler offers much food for thought.” — Blake Hestir, author of Plato on the Metaphysical Foundation of Meaning and Truth
