Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Ulysses Butterfly La farfalla di Ulisse" is a Poetry collection in English and Italian, which tells the story of a woman who finds herself and her inner strength, and ultimately learns how to fly.In the book, joyful events alternate with moments of discouragement and abandonment, and with dreams and sweet memories that colour with tenderness the void of the present.Alongside is the great love between her parents to which she dedicates the collection, and also the love of a wife for the husband lost too soon and that of a generous and exemplary mother.“Surrounded by ghosts haunting our lives, poems allow us to lose ourselves in search of something indefinite. In her verses, the author expresses the illusion, well lived, of an oneiric life escaping banal reality. It is a soul that awakens in the writing, bringing to light intimate passions, waking dreams; it is the confirmation that the best way to escape the ordinary is poetry”, from the Foreword of the journalist Mario Azzolini. Download or read book The Beatles Popular Music and Society written by NA NA and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More has been written about the Beatles than any other performing artists of the twentieth century. Accounts of their lives and times have been retold, reproduced and reinvented to the extent that their achievements have passed into contemporary folklore and popular mythology. What has been surprisingly absent, however, is any sustained critical investigation of the numerous debates and issues the group provoked. This book provides that long overdue analysis, by seeking to present the academic study of the Beatles in its appropriate contexts - historical, political, musical and sociological. Consisting entirely of newly commissioned articles and written by an international group of scholars, its contents challenge many of the traditional assumptions about the Beatles and offer fresh and provocative insights into the nature of their success and its continuing influence. It is essential reading for those wishing to understand not only the phenomenon of the Beatles but also the cultural environment within which popular music continues to be practised and studied.

Download or read book Animals and Animality in Primo Levi s Work written by Damiano Benvegnù and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated at the intersection of animal studies and literary theory, this book explores the remarkable and subtly pervasive web of animal imagery, metaphors, and concepts in the work of the Jewish-Italian writer, chemist, and Holocaust survivor Primo Levi (1919-1987). Relatively unexamined by scholars, the complex and extensive animal imagery Levi employed in his literary works offers new insights into the aesthetical and ethical function of testimony, as well as an original perspective on contemporary debates surrounding human-animal relationships and posthumanism. The three main sections that compose the book mirror Levi’s approach to non-human animals and animality: from an unquestionable bio-ethical origin (“Suffering”); through an investigation of the relationships between writing, technology, and animality (“Techne”); to a creative intellectual project in which literary animals both counterbalance the inevitable suffering of all creatures, and suggest a transformative image of interspecific community (“Creation”).

Book excerpt: Alarmingly independent, ravishingly beautiful, and surprisingly cosmopolitan, Provincetown already figures in dozens of guide books. But Building Provincetown, which uses architecture to tell social and cultural history, is the most comprehensive yet. More than 1,200 pictures and 650 entries cover everything from the largest national landmarks to the smallest dune shacks -- with three dozen boats in the bargain.Street by street, Building Provincetown takes you under the snug eaves of stout Cape cottages and behind elegant Greek Revival and Queen Anne-style doorways. You'll meet Portuguese fishermen and Yankee whalers, Abstract Expressionists and AIDS activists, early gay pioneers and latter-day buccaneers, drag queens, literary lions, Bohemians, Knights of Columbus, a few town criers, a lot of poets, plus shipwrights, sculptors, and an 87-year-old Avon lady.Working with town residents, David W. Dunlap, who has covered historic preservation for The New York Times since 1981, gathered images and stories that have never before been presented in one place. If you don't know Provincetown, this is an ideal introduction. If you think you already know Provincetown, you're in for a few happy surprises.
Download or read book Dante s Christian Ethics written by George Corbett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major re-appraisal of the Commedia as originally envisaged by Dante: as a work of ethics. Privileging the ethical, Corbett increases our appreciation of Dante's eschatological innovations and literary genius. Drawing upon a wider range of moral contexts than in previous studies, this book presents an overarching account of the complex ordering and political programme of Dante's afterlife. Balancing close readings with a lucid overview of Dante's Commedia as an ethical and political manifesto, Corbett cogently approaches the poem through its moral structure. The book provides detailed interpretations of three particularly significant sins - pride, sloth, and avarice - and the three terraces of Purgatory devoted to them. While scholars register Dante's explicit confession of pride, the volume uncovers Dante's implicit confession of sloth and prodigality (the opposing subvice of avarice) through Statius, his moral cypher.
