This book was released on 2005-04-05 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK aerospace industry (UKAI) is one of the most successful sectors of UK manufacturing: £17 billion turnover in 2003, £2.6 billion trade surplus; directly and indirectly employs some 255,000 people; high productivity against the UK average; heavy investment in R & D. This report examines the structure of the industry, assesses current performance, and highlights the work of the Aerospace Innovation and Growth Team (AeIGT). Despite its success, productivity is lower than the main international competitors, though recent signs are that this situation is changing. Government support for R & D funding has fallen recently but, again, recent awards suggest that new sources of funding are emerging from the DTI's Technology Programmes. The first report from AeIGT (2003) outlined action needed from all stakeholders to keep UKAI globally competitive in 2022, including the establishment of a National Aerospace Technology Strategy (NATS). The Committee praises the work of AeITG and welcomes progress made and the support shown by the Government.

Book Empire of the Clouds

Download or read book Empire of the Clouds written by James Hamilton-Paterson and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1945 Britain was the world's leading designer and builder of aircraft - a world-class achievement that was not mere rhetoric. And what aircraft they were. The sleek Comet, the first jet airliner. The awesome delta-winged Vulcan, an intercontinental bomber that could be thrown about the sky like a fighter. The Hawker Hunter, the most beautiful fighter-jet ever built and the Lightning, which could zoom ten miles above the clouds in a couple of minutes and whose pilots rated flying it as better than sex. How did Britain so lose the plot that today there is not a single aircraft manufacturer of any significance in the country? What became of the great industry of de Havilland or Handley Page? And what was it like to be alive in that marvellous post-war moment when innovative new British aircraft made their debut, and pilots were the rock stars of the age? James Hamilton-Paterson captures that season of glory in a compelling book that fuses his own memories of being a schoolboy plane spotter with a ruefully realistic history of British decline - its loss of self confidence and power. It is the story of great and charismatic machines and the men who flew them: heroes such as Bill Waterton, Neville Duke, John Derry and Bill Beaumont who took inconceivable risks, so that we could fly without a second thought.

The Framework Policy covers the following areas: (1) Supporting growth and benefits of aviation; (2) Managing aviation's environmental impacts, such as climate change and noise pollution; (3) The role of the Airports Commission; (4) Other aviation objectives, including: protecting passenger' rights; competition and regulation policy; airspace; safety; security and planning.

Book Britain and the Political Economy of European Military Aerospace Collaboration 1960 2023

Download or read book Britain and the Political Economy of European Military Aerospace Collaboration 1960 2023 written by Keith Hayward and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK has been collaborating with international, primarily European partners in the design, development and production of advanced combat aircraft for over sisty years. Driven by a combination of rising costs and limited domestic markets, collaboration has also been a highly political act involving a combination of national, industrial and technological interests. Over the years, the form of collaboration has evolved, in some cases leading to the creation of transnational companies. The UK has been a pioneer of globalisation in the defence industry, establishing a strong presence inside the US defence market and has become a significant partner with American companies in key military aerospace programmes. This has contributed to divisions within the European military aerospace industry which are likely to continue into the next generation of combat aircraft.
