Book excerpt: When fifty-year-old millionaire Henry Vandalay is found stabbed to death on the cement floor of his shop, and the Tarot Death card is found in the ancient Keltic layout spread neatly beside his cold body, Henry's beautiful young wife, Katherine, hires numerologist, Samantha Blackwell, to find her husband's killer. Katherine invites Sam to the Vandalay mansion for the weekend. During an elegant dinner at the mansion, Sam is visited by a vision of a floating dead man who supplicates her with decomposing arms. The tension mounts when she is awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of footsteps in the hallway. She peers out of her bedroom doorway to find an apparition moving down the grand staircase. The discovery of a hidden pagan altar lures Sam even deeper into the convoluted relationships in the drafty house, and into the business dealings of Henry Vandalay. The next day, as a small circle of people gather for the reading of the will, terrible secrets are revealed. Is Sam getting too close to the killer? Will she be next? Only her steely resolve propels her to unravel the mystery hidden in the Tarot layout, and reveal the identity of the true killer.

Book The Two Witnesses are God the Father and The Holy Spirit Revelation 11

Download or read book The Two Witnesses are God the Father and The Holy Spirit Revelation 11 written by Joel Hernandez and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first volume of my book I have proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that The Two Witnesses in Revelation 11 are God The Father and The Holy Spirit. Which is a fact that none of the Ancient, or, Modern day commentators have ever known in 2,000 years! That they are primarily God the Son's Two Witnesses, who is the Glorious omnipotent Angel in Revelation chapter 10 who is prophesying to John about his immediate future in Revelation chapter 11, where he has assumed his second nature as Jesus (Rev. 11:8). Nor have they ever known that Jesus is the Main and Hidden Actor behind the scenes, and underlying dimension of chapter 11, in spite of the fact that his Two Witnesses who are actually 'in him' in chapter 11, as I shall also demonstrate, seem to be the main Actors on the surface as I shall also demonstrate. Or ever known that Jesus is alive in chapter 11. Now that the Angel has become Jesus, they must be referred to as Christ' Two Witnesses. None of the commentators have ever taken these facts into account, because they never suspected the Two Witnesses could be God, who they should have considered in the first place! And considered 2 Cor. 5:19 which says that, "God was 'in Christ' reconciling the world unto himself." That which immediately proves the Two Witnesses are the Father and Holy Spirit, is the fact that Christ, who is also God, is called the very same things in the Bible they are, a Witness, an Olive Tree, a Lampstand and a Prophet, making a total of Three "Witnesses" (Rev. 1:5; Rev. 11:3). Three "Olive Trees" (Rev. 11:4; Judg. 9:8-9). Three "Lampstands" (Rev. 11:4; Zech. 4:1). And Three "Prophets" (Rev. 11:10; John 4:19). The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, have always been Witnesses of each other throughout all Eternity. And now that God the Son, the omnipotent Angel has come down from the third heaven to earth in Rev. 10:1-2, and assumed the form of Jesus, the Father and Holy Spirit, have now become the Two Witnesses of the Lamb that was slain (Rev. 11:7-8; Rev. 5:6) in Time.

Book excerpt: When Akuma, a youthful African government secondary school teacher, leaves his hometown and goes to the capital city, he hardly knows that he will be paralyzed and will not be able to use his legs again. The Journey's End is a character-driven narrative that explores the lives of two men who meet in Yaoundé, the capital city: Lucas Wango, an elderly pensioner who comes to collect his back pay of seven years' pension money, and Akuma, a physically challenged man who helps him recover his pension arrears. Wango doesn't know that Akuma, aka Général, is a mobster and the boss of a city gang that commands and controls a better part of the metropolis. Running parallel to this central plot are two subplots that eventually converge at the end of the novel: Lucas Wango's meddling in and eventual frustration with national political life and Général's relationship with Martina, a woman with whom he falls in love in the city. Set in the rural African landscape of Yambe and Menamo - Akuma's home village which he left to come to the city, and the urban backdrop of the rapidly populated city of Yaoundé, The Journey's End epitomizes the predicament of Africa's expanding slum-cities, characterized by poverty, corruption, and survival-driven individuality. For whom does the journey end - remains an absorbing question that animates every single page in this extraordinary urban adventure.

Then the pool's surface rippled and tossed darts of sunlight at my eyes, and I could see Zazu quite well. She was wearing either the latest thing in jazzy bathing suits or nothing at all. She reached the ladder and started to climb up it, nonchalant as a bird--a jaybird. "Hi," I said brightly, "you can see I'm working." She started down the ladder until the water was almost up to her waist. "Do you always swim in the nude, dear?" I said. "It feels good. Probably I won't do it when I'm older." "I thought that was when girls did it." The Meandering Corpse is the 31st book in the Shell Scott Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book excerpt: In all of Commissaire Georges Dupin’s time living in Brittany, there has never been a murder on his home turf, until now, in Jean-Luc Bannalec's The Body by the Sea. A town on the sea, Concarneau’s nickname is Ville Bleue, or the Blue Town. With three harbors at its center, visitors can see enormous ships, sailors, fishermen, and the industry that goes alongside it. Because of its geographical location, Concarneau has shown it’s perfectly positioned to protect its inhabitants from enemy attacks. For this reason and more, including his favorite restaurant, the Amiral, Commissaire Georges Dupin calls this town home. Most of his colleagues are on vacation for the Pentecost long weekend, but Dupin remains. His future in-laws are coming to visit. But what happens when an enemy attacks from within? Dupin’s plans as host must change when the body of Doctor Chaboseau is discovered. Chaboseau fell to his death, pushed from his home above the Amiral. With only two new colleagues to help—no one else is answering their phone—Dupin is tasked with finding out what happened to the doctor.

Book The Science of Forensic Entomology

Download or read book The Science of Forensic Entomology written by David B. Rivers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of Forensic Entomology builds a foundation of biological and entomological knowledge that equips the student to be able to understand and resolve questions concerning the presence of specific insects at a crime scene, in which the answers require deductive reasoning, seasoned observation, reconstruction and experimentation—features required of all disciplines that have hypothesis testing at its core. Each chapter addresses topics that delve into the underlying biological principles and concepts relevant to the insect biology that forms the bases for using insects in matters of legal importance. The book is more than an introduction to forensic entomology as it offers in depth coverage of non-traditional topics, including the biology of maggot masses, temperature tolerances of necrophagous insects; chemical attraction and communication; reproductive strategies of necrophagous flies; archaeoentomology, and use of insects in modern warfare (terrorism). As such it will enable advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to gain a sound knowledge of the principles, concepts and methodologies necessary to use insects and other arthropods in a wide range of legal matters.

Book The Modernist Corpse

Download or read book The Modernist Corpse written by Erin E. Edwards and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unconventional take on the corpse challenges traditional conceptions of who—and what—counts as human, while offering bold insights into the modernist project Too often regarded as the macabre endpoint of life, the corpse is rarely discussed and largely kept out of the public eye. In The Modernist Corpse, Erin E. Edwards unearths the critically important but previously buried life of the corpse, which occupies a unique place between biology and technology, the living and the dead. Exploring the posthumous as the posthuman, Edwards argues that the corpse is central to understanding relations between the human and its “others,” including the animal, the machine, and the thing. From photographs of lynchings to documentation of World War I casualties, the corpse is also central to the modernist project. Edwards turns critical attention to the corpse through innovative, posthumanist readings of canonical thinkers such as William Faulkner, Jean Toomer, W. E. B. Du Bois, Mina Loy, Djuna Barnes, and Gertrude Stein, offering new insights into the intersections among race, gender, technical media, and matter presumed to be dead. Edwards’s expansive approach to modernism includes diverse materials such as Hollywood film, experimental photography, autopsy discourses, and the comic strip Krazy Kat, producing a provocatively broad understanding of the modernist corpse and its various “lives.” The Modernist Corpse both establishes important new directions for modernist inquiry and overturns common thought about the relationship between living and dead matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Distant Relation breaks down the artificial division between philosophy and literature by weaving contemporary philosophic arguments through close readings of Carpentier, Rulfo, Paz, and Garcia Marquez. Thomson draws the reader into the largely uninhabited space between philosophy and literature, providing new critical strategies that allow text and reader to respond to the very distance they share. These strategies involve a reconceptualization of distance that recognizes the productive and affirmative nature of separation. The Distant Relation will attract anyone interested in the ongoing struggle to overcome conventional interpretations of language, time, and identity within the broader context of philosophical trends and Spanish American studies.
