Book excerpt: From the best-selling artist and YouTube art instructor, this book features step-by-step lessons that show you how to draw professional-quality portraits, landscapes, travel sketches, and animals using only two ordinary pencils. Great art doesn't have to be expensive. For the cost of a regular graphite writing pencil and an equally ordinary black colored pencil, you can create drawings worthy of framing and displaying. In this straightforward, aspiring artist's guide to rendering a variety of popular subjects with only two pencils, artist and art instructor Mark Crilley presents a direct, approachable, and achievable method for drawing just about anything. The Two-Pencil Method breaks down Crilley's techniques across six chapters of five lessons each. In each lesson, you'll learn how the two-pencil method can add depth and shading, allowing you to create bold and distinctive drawings that go beyond mere sketchbook doodles. The book moves from a primer on drawing basics to step-by-step examples of still lifes, landscapes, animals, travel sketches, and portraits. With each chapter, Crilley's confident and encouraging voice and expert insights demonstrate how to achieve stunning artistic results from the simplest of art materials.

Book Pen and Pencil Drawing Techniques

Pencil drawing and ink drawing receive separate treatments; both sections stress materials and tools — including graphite pencils, charcoal and pastel pencils, wax pencils, pens, brushes, marking pens, scratching tools, and more. They also explore different methods of handling strokes and lines, techniques for stabling and conveying tones and shadows, and technical tips. The 28 step-by-step demonstrations — many of them exquisitely illustrated in full color — range from techniques of fine penwork and cross-hatching to drawing with colored inks and colored markers. In addition, a series of multipart exercises will prove extraordinarily useful to the student. The profusion of skillful illustrations throughout the book, over 540 in all, constitute a treasure in themselves, covering a great diversity of subjects — from portraits and still lifes to landscapes and cityscapes worldwide.

Book Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements XVII

Download or read book Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements XVII written by G.M. Carlomagno and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing papers presented at the seventeenth in a series of biennial meetings organised by the Wessex Institute and first held in 1984, this book includes the latest research from scientists who perform experiments, researchers who develop computer codes, and those who carry out measurements on prototypes and whose work may interact. Progress in the engineering sciences is dependent on the orderly and concurrent development of all three fields. Continuous improvement in computer efficiency, coupled with diminishing costs and rapid development of numerical procedures have generated an ever-increasing expansion of computational simulations that permeate all fields of science and technology. As these procedures continue to grow in magnitude and complexity, it is essential to be certain of their reliability, i.e. to validate their results. This can be achieved by performing dedicated and accurate experiments. At the same time, current experimental techniques have become more complex and sophisticated so that they require the exploitation of computers, both for running experiments as well as acquiring and processing the resulting data. The papers contained in the book address advances in the interaction between these three areas. They cover such topics as: Computational and Experimental Methods; Fluid Flow; Structural and Stress Analysis; Materials Characterisation; Heat Transfer and Thermal Processes; Advances in Computational Methods; Automotive Applications; Applications in Industry; Process Simulations; Environmental Modelling and Applications; Computer Modelling; Validation of Computer Modelling; Computation in Measurements; Data Processing of Experiments; Virtual Testing and Verification; Simulation and Forecasting; Measurements in Engineering.

Book Borehole Acoustic Logging Theory and Methods

Download or read book Borehole Acoustic Logging Theory and Methods written by Hua Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the principles, historical development, and applications of many acoustic logging methods, including acoustic logging-while-drilling and cased-hole logging methods. Benefiting from the rapid development of information technology, the subsurface energy resource industry is moving toward data integration to increase the efficiency of decision making through the use of advanced big data and artificial intelligence technologies, such as machine/deep learning. However, wellbore failure may happen if evaluations of risk and infrastructure are made using data mining methods without a complete understanding of the physics of borehole measurements. Processed results from borehole acoustic logging will constitute part of the input data used for data integration. Therefore, to successfully employ modern techniques for data assimilation and analysis, one must fully understand the complexity of wave mode propagation, how such propagation is influenced by the well, and the materials placed within the well (i.e., the cement, casing, and drill strings), and ultimately how waves penetrate into and are influenced by geological formations. State-of-the-art simulation methods, such as the discrete wavenumber integration method (DWM) and the finite difference method (FDM), are introduced to tackle the numerical challenges associated with models containing large material contrasts, such as the contrasts between borehole fluids and steel casings. Waveforms and pressure snapshots are shown to help the reader understand the wavefields under various conditions. Advanced data processing methods, including velocity analyses within the time and frequency domains, are utilized to extract the velocities of different modes. Furthermore, the authors discuss how various formation parameters influence the waveforms recorded in the borehole and describe the principles of both existing and potential tool designs and data acquisition schemes. This book greatly benefits from the research and knowledge generated over four decades at the Earth Resources Laboratory (ERL) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under its acoustic logging program. Given its scope, the book is of interest to geophysicists (including borehole geophysicists and seismologists), petrophysicists, and petroleum engineers who are interested in formation evaluation and cementation conditions. In addition, this book is of interest to researchers in the acoustic sciences and to 4th-year undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of geophysics and acoustical physics.
