Book Turbulent Mixing in Stably Stratified Flows

Download or read book Turbulent Mixing in Stably Stratified Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High resolution direct numerical simulations are used to investigate the dynamics of turbulence in flows subject to strong stable stratification, which are common in natural settings. Results are presented for two categories of simulations, uniform and non-uniform density stratification. For all simulated flows, the density stratification was held constant in time, and there was no ambient shear. Flows with uniform density stratification are first analyzed to help provide clear insight to physical processes, followed by flows with non-uniform density stratification which better represent the stratification occurring in nature.

Book Influence of Initial Boundary Layer on the Two Dimensional Turbulent Mixing of a Single Stream

Download or read book Influence of Initial Boundary Layer on the Two Dimensional Turbulent Mixing of a Single Stream written by R. C. Bauer and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integral method is presented for estimating the influence of an initial boundary layer on the development of a two-dimensional, isobaric, turbulent, free shear layer. The basic equation is derived by applying the principle that, at any streamwise station along the free shear layer, the momentum of the entrained flow equals the total axial turbulent shear force acting along the dividing streamline. This equation is solved using a single parameter family of velocity profiles derived by Korst and Prandtl's mixing length concept for turbulent shear stress. The theory involves one empirical constant which was evaluated using Tollmien's experimental data for incompressible, turbulent mixing. The theory is verified by comparing with experimental data for free-stream Mach numbers up to 6.4. (Author).

Book Unsteady Combustor Physics

Download or read book Unsteady Combustor Physics written by Tim C. Lieuwen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing clean, sustainable energy systems is a pre-eminent issue of our time. Most projections indicate that combustion-based energy conversion systems will continue to be the predominant approach for the majority of our energy usage. Unsteady combustor issues present the key challenge associated with the development of clean, high-efficiency combustion systems such as those used for power generation, heating or propulsion applications. This comprehensive study is unique, treating the subject in a systematic manner. Although this book focuses on unsteady combusting flows, it places particular emphasis on the system dynamics that occur at the intersection of the combustion, fluid mechanics and acoustic disciplines. Individuals with a background in fluid mechanics and combustion will find this book to be an incomparable study that synthesises these fields into a coherent understanding of the intrinsically unsteady processes in combustors.

Book A Physical Introduction to Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book A Physical Introduction to Fluid Mechanics written by Alexander J. Smits and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2000 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncover Effective Engineering Solutions to Practical Problems With its clear explanation of fundamental principles and emphasis on real world applications, this practical text will motivate readers to learn. The author connects theory and analysis to practical examples drawn from engineering practice. Readers get a better understanding of how they can apply these concepts to develop engineering answers to various problems. By using simple examples that illustrate basic principles and more complex examples representative of engineering applications throughout the text, the author also shows readers how fluid mechanics is relevant to the engineering field. These examples will help them develop problem-solving skills, gain physical insight into the material, learn how and when to use approximations and make assumptions, and understand when these approximations might break down. Key Features of the Text * The underlying physical concepts are highlighted rather than focusing on the mathematical equations. * Dimensional reasoning is emphasized as well as the interpretation of the results. * An introduction to engineering in the environment is included to spark reader interest. * Historical references throughout the chapters provide readers with the rich history of fluid mechanics.
