Book excerpt: Illustrations: 1 B/w illustration Description: J.N. Hollister's The Shi'a of India is a comprehensive study of the rise of Shi'ism, its coming to India, its role in the spread of Islam and its adjustments with Hinduism. The first cleavage in Islam occurred immediately after the passing away of the prophet. Efforts to path up the Schism, though successful initially, resulted ultimately in the division of Muslims into Shias and Sunnis. The animosity generated then continues even now to plague these two. The reasons for this persisting hostility is made clear in this book by the accounts of the personalities of the Prophet, 'Ali-the first Imam and his successors. The doctrines of the Shias are compared with those of the Sunnis to give a clear exposition of the religion of the Shias-Ithna' Ashariya. The history of the Shias from the time of their reaching this country till now along with a wealth of details regarding their rites, festivals, places of pilgrimage and celebration of Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husain at Kerbala are given. This is followed by a similar treatment to the branches of Shi'ism-Fatimids, Bohras and Khojas. The scholars who were hampered for want of a book on Shias will find this book a mine of information on the subject.

Book Shi a Islam in Colonial India

Download or read book Shi a Islam in Colonial India written by Justin Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in Shi'a Islam has increased greatly in recent years, although Shi'ism in the Indian subcontinent has remained largely underexplored. Focusing on the influential Shi'a minority of Lucknow and the United Provinces, a region that was largely under Shi'a rule until 1856, this book traces the history of Indian Shi'ism through the colonial period toward independence in 1947. Drawing on a range of new sources, including religious writing, polemical literature and clerical biography, it assesses seminal developments including the growth of Shi'a religious activism, madrasa education, missionary activity, ritual innovation and the politicization of the Shi'a community. As a consequence of these significant religious and social transformations, a Shi'a sectarian identity developed that existed in separation from rather than in interaction with its Sunni counterparts. In this way the painful birth of modern sectarianism was initiated, the consequences of which are very much alive in South Asia today.

Why is Twelver Shi`ism one of them? As the established faith in modern Iran, the majority faith in Iraq and areas in the Gulf and with its adherents forming sizeable minorities elsewhere in the region, it is arguably the most successful branch of Shi'ism. Andrew Newman charts the history Twelver Shi'ism, uncovering the development of the key distinctive doctrines and practices which ensured its survival in the face of repeated challenges. He argues that the key to the faith's endurance has been its ability to institutionalise responses to the changing, often localised circumstances in which the community has found itself, thereby remaining remarkably resilient in the face of both internal disagreements and external opposition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume - grown out of an international conference at Freiburg University in 1999 - deals with various aspects of Shiite Islam since the 18th century. It is divided into two major parts, the first of which is dedicated to traditional institutions of theology and learning and their transformation in modern times. The second part treats internal debates and the activities of Shiite dissidents, showing that Shiism is far from being uniform. Ideological and political developments in the 20th century and especially the Islamic Revolution in Iran have shaped the image of modern Shiism more than any other tendencies and are therefore also discussed in greater detail in Parts three and four. This book reflects the state of the art in this field of Islamic studies, its 21 contributions covering three centuries and a vast geographical range.

Excerpt: Shia Muslims are a large minority among India's Muslims. However, there has been no particular census conducted in India with regards to sects, but Indian sources like Times of India and DNA reported Indian Shiite population in mid 2005-2006 between 25% to 31% of entire Muslim population of India which accounts them in numbers between 40,000,000 to 50,000,000 of 157,000,000 Indian Muslim population. However, as per an estimation of one reputed Shiite NGO Alimaan Trust, India's Shia population in early 2000 was around 30 million with Sayyids comprising just over half of the entire Shia population. According to some national and international sources Indian Shia population is the world's second-largest after Iran, Shiite population was also acclaimed publicly as second largest by the 14th Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh quoted in the year 2005. One of the lingering problems in estimating the Shia population is that unless the Shia form a significant minority in a Muslim country, the entire population is often listed as Sunni.
