Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Religion: A Series of Historical Sketches The purpose, then, of this book is to exhibit in a Short form the continuity of the history of the True Religion, as unbroken from the day when god first divided the light from the darkness up to our own day. It is the want of the perception of this unbroken continuity that is the cause of the miserable decay of religious life amongst ourselves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vitality of Christian Dogmas: And Their Power of Evolution a Study in Religious Philosophy I am asked, Where, then, does faith come in, and the blessedness of those who have not seen and yet believe? I answer that true religious faith is precisely the faculty whereby we accept the epi phanious with the heart, and make surrender to it in our lives, and leave the mysterious in patient con fidence with God. The faith which yields a blind assent to mysterious dogmas because propounded by ecclesiastical authority is not the faith of Scripture at all it is, in fact, fanaticism, and there is an un belief which is preferable to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason and Dogma: Or Footprints of a Soul Calamity, distress, want, fear, praise, awe, and won der are the foundation - stones of all early religious tem ples, and the chief impulses to all primitive devotional acts. Nor have these forces lost their sway today, for over minds Of low degree they always have control. But as one advances in the scale of civilization, becomes ac quainted with the laws of nature and his own being, he becomes more and more free from the tyranny of fear, yielding to the voice of reason only, or to the sweet com mands of love and duty. The noble soul can never re ceive nor offer services given for the sake of reward, or with the hope Of escaping punishment; but such a man yields his whole being to the drawings of love or to the sense of conscious duty. It is evident, therefore, that among all religious motives these two are incomparably the highest and noblest; and being highest and best, the soul that yields to them is doubly blest: he is happy in the service he renders, and the service itself ennobles his being. To get the noble man's service, therefore, he must be reasonably appealed to on the ground of duty or love, and not on those of fear or favor. The fact that the average appeal of the Christian pulpit is not made on the grounds of duty or love, shows in general the quality of the minds to whom the appeal is made, and the vicious character of the creed on which the appeal is founded. Book The Harmony of Divine Truth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Harmony of Divine Truth Classic Reprint written by Seth Williston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harmony of Divine Truth How it can be accounted for, that the term truth should have been selected by the inspired writers, (or rather by the Spirit of inspiration.) to distinguish the religion which they exhibit, from every other system in the world, if at the same time they had considered it as a mere moral chaos, made for our plastic hands to mould and shape into such creeds as should please every man's own fancy? It is worthy to be noted that the sacred volume makes a very copious* use of this term, applying it to every department Of religion. For itself, as an inspired book, it claims the honor of being called the scripture of truth, and the word of truth. Dan. X. 21. Eph. I. 13. Is not the Bible thus manifestly distinguished from the Koran of the Mahometan's, and the Shasters of the Brahmins, and from every other book which sets up a claim to inspiration? The God of the Bible is called the true God, his beloved Son is called the true Witness, and his Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth and why, except to distinguish Jehovah from idols, his Son from false Christs, and the Holy Ghost from Satan, and every other lying spirit? The doctrines we are required to believe, are denominated the truth, to distinguish them from the doctrines of devils, and from delusive errors of every kind; and the belief of these doctrines, when it is wrought in our hearts by the Spirit of God, is said to be truth and no lie, to distinguish it from a false faith which does not work by love. Also, that conduct which is required by the divine law, and which is the external expression of a heart conformed to it, is called obeying the truth. 1 Tim. Ii. 4. 1 John ii. 27. 2 John 4. The church of the living God, when considered as a community, composed Of men redeemed from iniquity, is called the pillar and ground Of the truth. 1 Tim. Iii. 15. See also Isa. Xxvi. 2. What an importance does it give to religious truth when we hear Christ Jesus witnessing this good confession before Pontius Pilate! TO this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. John xviii. 37. Surely that must be a thing of no small consequence, the establishment of which was the end of our Redeemer's birth, and the sole cause why he came into the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jehovah-Jesus the Oneness of God: The True Trinity To others still, this doctrine has proved a stum bling-block, preventing their acceptance of the Gos pel: their religious teachers assuming and insisting, but not proving to their satisfaction, that it is essen tial to Christianity while it seems to them to involve an absurdity, - to be, not a mystery above reason, but a dogma contrary to reason. Book Toward a Humean True Religion

Download or read book Toward a Humean True Religion written by Andre C. Willis and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Hume is traditionally seen as a devastating critic of religion. He is widely read as an infidel, a critic of the Christian faith, and an attacker of popular forms of worship. His reputation as irreligious is well forged among his readers, and his argument against miracles sits at the heart of the narrative overview of his work that perennially indoctrinates thousands of first-year philosophy students. In Toward a Humean True Religion, Andre Willis succeeds in complicating Hume’s split approach to religion, showing that Hume was not, in fact, dogmatically against religion in all times and places. Hume occupied a “watershed moment,” Willis contends, when old ideas of religion were being replaced by the modern idea of religion as a set of epistemically true but speculative claims. Thus, Willis repositions the relative weight of Hume’s antireligious sentiment, giving significance to the role of both historical and discursive forces instead of simply relying on Hume’s personal animus as its driving force. Willis muses about what a Humean “true religion” might look like and suggests that we think of this as a third way between the classical and modern notions of religion. He argues that the cumulative achievements of Hume’s mild philosophic theism, the aim of his moral rationalism, and the conclusion of his project on the passions provide the best content for this “true religion.”

Book The Doom of Dogma and the Dawn of Truth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Doom of Dogma and the Dawn of Truth Classic Reprint written by Henry Frank and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doom of Dogma and the Dawn of Truth We have passed the age of Iconoclasm and entered the period of Reconstruction. The Theology of Mediaevalism is dead beyond recovery. The furious storm of criticism and conflict, which raged for a century or more, has abated, and left amid the debris and ruin of ancient error the relics of prophetic truth on which the superstructure of Higher Criticism and Scientific Reconstruction can be reared. It has been the effort of the author of this book to outline a system of interpretation, which, while it denudes the ancient Christian structure of its gargoyles of superstition and metaphysical phantasy, retains sufficient of its framework to evidence its original purity of purpose, and its kinship with all other similar efforts of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into, the Truth of Dogmatic Christianity Comprising a Discussion With a Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church Some time ago, for reasons of no interest to the public, I engaged in a friendly controversy on religious topics, running in a rather desultory way through several years, with a Bishop (since Archbishop) of the Roman Catholic Church. A mass of arguments on both sides of the question was thus accumulated, and friends, who think they have been benefited by reading the discussion, have urged its publication.
