Book excerpt: The story of one man's journey to hell. Hell does have a name.Robben Island. This story, though fictional, is based on, and honors, the life - and death - of Stephen Biko. It is 1977, Johannesburg, South Africa. Some cruelly and sadistically wielded power meant to scourge, some broke under its weight, while some remained unbent, immovable under it, resolute of spirit, and ultimately, tragically, indomitable. This is the story of such a man.The story of Stephen Biko, though familiar to many, is a tragedy beyond what any man, any person should ever have to endure. This is not a story for the feint of heart or stomach. It is a story, not meant to shock, but to shine the unapologetic, unflattering light of truth on a situation that was, and is very real. Told through one man's journey, it will lay bare any and all realities of a world that for some was inescapable. The pain is real. The horrors are real. Ignoring them won't change a thing. Understanding it just might.

Book Bleeding for Allah

  • Author : Markus Aurelius

  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Bleeding for Allah written by Markus Aurelius and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-11-19 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 4 years in the making, Bleeding for Allah scrutinizes Islam from the very birth of the religion. The Koran, the Holy Book of more than one billion people worldwide, is systematically analyzed to reflect the true nature of its message. Bleeding for Allah goes the full distance in detailing the uncomfortable and painful truth of that message. Although touted as a peaceful religion and Islamic terrorists dismissed as misguided fanatics, it is clear that the very words of Allah, as voiced through the Archangel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad, are anything but peaceful. Markus Aurelius, in concise and clear fashion, gives countless examples of Koranic verse that readily demonstrates its militancy and violence. The author speaks to cultural bias and is quite sensitive to its influence on interpretation. But the author finds it extremely difficult to dismiss countless holy verse such as: Believers, take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends. (Koran, 5:51) or: Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and deal sternly with them. (Koran, 66:9). To further try to eliminate cultural bias, the book includes a comparative analysis of specific words between the New Testament and the Koran. For example, the words punishment and torture appear 600% more in the Koran while the word love appears 500% less. The author carefully examines the Prophet Muhammads life and outlines the gruesome details of his explosive success in the 7th century. The shrewd Prophet creatively found divine support from Allah for his banditry and mass murder. Sadly, more than one billion people believe those words today. Americans are woefully in the dark regarding the Koran. But few Americans have taken the time to read the Koran itself. Markus Aurelius challenges the American public to do just that. Bleeding for Allah is the perfect primer.

Book The Beauty of the Trinity

Download or read book The Beauty of the Trinity written by Justin Coyle and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2023-01-03 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Justin Shaun Coyle remembers the theology of beauty of the forgotten Summa Halensis, an early-thirteenth-century text written by Franciscan friars at the University of Paris. Many scholars vaunt the Summa Halensis—conceived but not drafted entirely by Alexander of Hales (d. 1245)—for its teaching on beauty and its influence on giants of the high scholastic idiom. But few read the text’s teaching theologically—as a teaching about God. The Beauty of the Trinity: A Reading of the Summa Halensis proposes an interpretation of the Summa’s beauty—teaching as deeply and inexorably theological, even trinitarian. The book takes as its keystone a passage in which the Summa Halensis identifies beauty with the “sacred order of the divine persons.” If beauty names a trinitarian structure rather than a divine attribute, then the text teaches beauty where it teaches trinity. So The Beauty of the Trinity trawls the massive Summa Halensis for beauty across passages largely ignored by the literature. Taking seriously the Summa’s own definition of beauty rather than imposing onto the text modernity’s narrow aesthetic categories allows Coyle to identity beauty nearly everywhere across the text’s pages: in its teaching on the transcendental determinations of being, on the trinity proper, on creation, on psychology, on grace. A medieval text must teach beauty that appreciates beauty theologically beyond the constricted and anachronistic boundaries that often limit study of medieval aesthetics. Readers of medieval theology and theological aesthetics both will find in The Beauty of the Trinity a depiction of how an early scholastic summa thinks beauty according to the mystery of the trinity.

Book Poetics of the Incarnation

Download or read book Poetics of the Incarnation written by Cristina Maria Cervone and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of John describes the Incarnation of Christ as "the Word made flesh"—an intriguing phrase that uses the logic of metaphor but is not traditionally understood as merely symbolic. Thus the conceptual puzzle of the Incarnation also draws attention to language and form: what is the Word; how is it related to language; how can the Word become flesh? Such theological questions haunt the material imagery engaged by medieval writers, the structural forms that give their writing shape, and even their ideas about language itself. In Poetics of the Incarnation, Cristina Maria Cervone examines the work of fourteenth-century writers who, rather than approaching the mystery of the Incarnation through affective identification with the Passion, elected to ponder the intellectual implications of the Incarnation in poetical and rhetorical forms. Cervone argues that a poetics of the Incarnation becomes the grounds for working through the philosophical and theological implications of language, at a point in time when Middle English was emerging as a legitimate, if contested, medium for theological expression. In brief lyrics and complex narratives, late medieval English writers including William Langland, Julian of Norwich, Walter Hilton, and the anonymous author of the Charters of Christ took the relationship between God and humanity as a jumping-off point for their meditations on the nature of language and thought, the elision between the concrete and the abstract, the complex relationship between acting and being, the work done by poetry itself in and through time, and the meaning latent within poetical forms. Where Passion-devoted writing would focus on the vulnerability and suffering of the fleshly body, these texts took imaginative leaps, such as when they depict the body of Christ as a lily or the written word. Their Incarnational poetics repeatedly call attention to the fact that, in theology as in poetics, form matters.

Book Srednjeve ki Blejski otok v arheolo kih virih Medieval archaeology of Bled Island

Download or read book Srednjeve ki Blejski otok v arheolo kih virih Medieval archaeology of Bled Island written by Benjamin Štular and published by Založba ZRC. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Z namenom pripraviti celostno objavo vsega dostopnega gradiva antropološko gradivo predstavljamo v ločenem poglavju (Leben Seljak). V zaključku knjige predstavljamo izsledke izkopavanj pri Bodeščah (Modrijan). Predstavitvi arheoloških izsledkov o Blejskem otoku sledi širok pregled fenomena mitične pokrajine, njene izvedbe v blejskem kotu ter umesti Blejski otok v njen kontekst (Pleterski). Napovedni model potrdi njen obstoj z izkopavanji v Bodeščah. V kontekstu mitične pokrajine se pokaže Blejski otok kot sveto mesto, na kterem so potekali vsakoletni obredi. Tam je bil grob mitičnega lika, ki ga v Sloveniji poznamo kot kralja Matjaža.
