So when I fly all the way to Ireland to find my long-lost dad, I have no intention of playing the damsel in distress to some dude. But the night I encounter--and accidentally wallop upside the head--Prince Olivier of Salasia, my plans are completely upended. This prince is the opposite of charming, though. After thirty seconds in his presence, I want to feed him to a dragon. But fate is a fickle b*tch. Before I know it, I agree to team up with Olivier in the search for my dad. As I travel across Europe with this actual honest-to-god prince, I wonder, what's the worst that could happen? It's not like I'll be stupid enough to fall in love with Prince Charming.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Warped in the Making: Crimes of Love and Hate I have myself been present either at the investigation or the final trials of the criminals. Several of the stories I have especially chosen because of the ingenuity displayed both by the law-breakers and the investigators. Truly the science of crime has developed and has armed itself with modern weapons. But equally so has the knowledge of those who are responsible for the protection of the community expanded until the labora tory, equipped with camera, microscope and chemical retorts, has become its greatest ally. Book Love Hate and the Law in Tudor England

Download or read book Love Hate and the Law in Tudor England written by L. R. Poos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love, Hate, and the Law in Tudor England reconstructs the life of Ralph Rishton, a member of the sixteenth-century Lancashire gentry who was a child bridegroom and a serial wife-discarder, who bribed church officials to obtain a forged annulment, defrauded a kinsman out of his inheritance, and adroitly manipulated his own and other people's land. The dozens of lawsuits in which the Rishtons were involved, in many different courts, elucidate one family's engagement with law in Tudor England: how they used and misused law, how it shaped their perceptions of rights and mutual obligations, and how it framed litigants' and witnesses' language. Drawing upon trial and estate records, the core of this study is the central narrative of Ralph Rishton's three wives, of litigiousness and violence, marriage and property, and the pursuit of equitable resolutions to disputes, along with countless smaller narratives that vividly capture a culture in its time and place. Alongside that central narrative, L. R. Poos uses the Rishton stories as a starting-point to analyse child marriage, the construction of memory, and the development of local historical identity through antiquarians and the Victorian and Edwardian local press, demonstrating how - from the time of the Rishtons into the twentieth century - historical narratives were continually reshaped and repurposed.

Book excerpt: This volume gathers a collection of the most seminal essays written by leading experts in the fields of law, and cultural studies, which address the cultural dimension of trials. Taken together, these essays conceive of trials as sites of legal performance and as critical public spaces in which the law both encounters and interacts dialogically with the culture in which it is embedded. Inquiring into the contours of that dialogic relation, these essays trace the paths of cultural stories as they circulate in and through trial settings, examine how trials emerge out of particular social and historical contexts, and suggest ways in which trials themselves, as both singular events and generic forms, circulate and signify in culture.

Download or read book Road to Damnation written by Chris Brook and published by Clear Decks Media. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Father’s Day of 2005, Robert Farquharson was driving his three sons Jai, Tyler and Bailey aged 10, 7 and 2 years old, to their mothers house. His car ran off the road and into a dam. Whilst Farquharson escaped, the three boys went down with the car and drowned. Murder!, they said. How could anyone be that evil?, they asked. Farquharson was tried and convicted of murdering his three sons, but won his appeal. He was again tried and again convicted. He has spent the last ten years in protective custody of maximum security prison, unsuitable for mixing with the unforgiving general prison population. The case is ingrained in the Australian psyche and Farquharson is placed along side the worst of the worst of Australian criminals. Road to Damnation takes a fresh look at the largely circumstantial evidence used to convict Farquharson. Through the eyes of a scientist, flaws are systematically uncovered, not only flaws in the case against Farquharson, but in the criminal justice system that convicted him. Could Farquharson actually be innocent? After all that has been said about him? All that has been done to him? Is Robert Farquharson the embodiment of evil? Or the victim of one of Australia’s worst miscarriages of justice? “Reveals a shattering injustice through sober, scientifically rigorous and unassailable analysis of all the evidence." Andrew L. Urban, author Murder by the Prosecution “your book is compelling” Alex Lavelle, theage “I’ve been completely enthralled by it” Ian Walker, ABC
