Book excerpt: Mother Goose finds herself on trial. She is accused of bringing harm to the characters in her stories so she can gain profit and fame from the retelling of their tale. The prosecuting attorney is a wolf and the jury is made up of some of the characters from her stories who are bringing the charges against her! Add to this an unsympathetic judge, played by an owl, and the Goose is in trouble! Mother Goose is defended by a soft spoken bear, who has a hard time convincing the jury that there is more to the stories than the violence that occasionally appears in them. Things look really bad for the Goose until the defense find themes weaving through her stories by cross-examining the characters of her nursery rhymes.

Book Witch Wicce Mother Goose

Download or read book Witch Wicce Mother Goose written by Robert W. Thurston and published by Longman Publishing Group. This book was released on 2001 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terrible history of witch hunts, torture and executions continues to fascinate. History of witches is a contested topic bound to attract attention. Fresh approach with new evidence will generate reviews and publicity. Written with the general reader in mind jargon-free and accessible. Full of illustrations. This is a compelling and contentious history of witches and witch-hunts in early modern Europe and America. Tens of thousands of people were persecuted and put to death as witches between 1400 and 1700 - the great age of witch-hunts. Why did the witch-hunts arise, flourish and decline during this period? What purpose did the persecutions serve? Who was accused, and what was the role of magic in the hunts? This important reassessment of witch panics and persecutions in Europe and colonial America both challenges and enhances existing interpretations of the phenomenon. Locating its origins 400 years earlier in the growing perception of threats to Western Christendom, Robert Thurston outlines the development of a 'persecuting society' in which campaigns against scapegoats such as heretics, Jews, lepers and homosexuals set the scene for the later witch hunts. He examines the creation of the witch stereotype and looks at how the early trials and hunts evolved, with the shift from accusatory to inquisitorial court procedures and reliance upon confessions leading to the increasing use of torture Robert Thurston is Professor of History at the University of Miami.

Book Mother Goose of Pudding Lane

Download or read book Mother Goose of Pudding Lane written by Chris Raschka and published by Candlewick. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated picture book creators Chris Raschka and Vladimir Radunsky offer one possible answer to the age-old question: Who was Mother Goose? We all love to hear Mother Goose rhymes and riddles. But did you know that there was a real Mother Goose who lived in Boston more than three hundred years ago? In 1692, Elizabeth Foster married a widower with ten children. His name was Isaac Goose, and after they married, Elizabeth became Mother Goose. She and Isaac had four more children together, and to help her care for such a big and boisterous family, Mother Goose sang songs and lullabies and made up rhymes and poems. Her nursery rhymes and stories were published at a print shop on Pudding Lane in Boston, though no copies of her book exist today. In a book featuring some of Mother Goose’s best-loved works, Vladimir Radunsky’s bright and humorous illustrations and Chris Raschka’s rhyming poems tell the little-known story of the Goose children, Isaac, and Elizabeth herself — the Mother Goose of Pudding Lane.

Book Pogo The Complete Daily Sunday Comic Strips Vol 1

Download or read book Pogo The Complete Daily Sunday Comic Strips Vol 1 written by Walt Kelly and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2011-12-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walt Kelly blended nonsense language, poetry, and political and social satire to make Pogo an essential contribution to American “intellectual” comics. As the strip progressed, it became a hilarious platform for Kelly’s scathing political views in which he skewered national bogeymen like J. Edgar Hoover, Joseph McCarthy, George Wallace, and Richard Nixon. Walt Kelly started when newspaper strips shied away from politics ― Pogo was ahead of its time and ahead of later strips (such as Doonesbury and The Boondocks) that tackled political issues. Our first (of 12) volume reprints approximately the first two years of Pogo ― dailies and (for the first time) full-color Sundays. This first volume also introduces such enduring supporting characters as Porkypine, Churchy LaFemme, Beauregard Bugleboy, Seminole Sam, Howland Owl, and many others. And for Christmas, 1949, Kelly started his tradition of regaling his readers with his infamously and gloriously mangled Christmas carols.

Book excerpt: The true crime story of a New York mother who killed and a daughter who wouldn’t die, from the author of A Killer’s Touch and Watch Mommy Die. Anti-Freeze For A Husband It looked like a suicide. A man’s corpse on the bathroom floor—next to a half-empty glass of anti-freeze. But fingerprints on the glass belonged to the deceased’s wife, Stacey Castor. And a turkey baster in the garbage had police wondering if she force-fed the toxic fluid down her husband’s throat. Pills For A Daughter In desperation, Stacey concocted a devious plan. She mixed a deadly cocktail of vodka and pills, then served it to her twenty-year-old daughter Ashley. The authorities would find Ashley with a suicide note, confessing to the anti-freeze murder. But Stacey’s plan backfired—because Ashley refused to die . . . A Killer For A Mother Charged with murdering her second husband—and attempting to kill her oldest daughter—Stacey Castor sparked a media frenzy. But when police dug up her first husband’s grave—and found anti-freeze in his body, too—this New York housewife earned a nickname that would follow her all the way to prison. They called her “The Black Widow.” And with good reason. The story that inspired the Lifetime film, Poisoned Love: The Stacey Castor Story, starring Nia Vardalos.
