Book What Market What Society What Union

Download or read book What Market What Society What Union written by Martinho Lucas Pires and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a discussion of some of the most pressing challenges facing EU integration: political and economic governance, constitutional status and citizenship. It does so by discussing the work of one of the most original Portuguese voices in EU studies, Francisco Lucas Pires. In his swan song, here translated into English for the first time, Lucas Pires critically discusses the Treaty of Amsterdam, dissecting the process of its enactment, and its wider consequences for the EU. His profound, original and premonitory observations are commented on in this book by six young, prominent EU law scholars from different research areas. The result is an original and sagacious reflection, aimed both at researchers of EU law and policymakers alike, on the victories and shortcomings of the European project, providing refreshing views on a significant but often-neglected moment in the EU’s history, as well as new avenues of critical thinking for the development of European integration. Martinho Lucas Pires is Ph.D. Candidate at Nova School of Law Lisbon, Assistant lecturer at Católica Law School Lisbon, and Counsel at DLA Piper ABBC Advogados Lisbon, Portugal. Francisco Pereira Coutinho is Associate Professor and Vice-Dean at Nova School of Law Lisbon, Faculty of Law of the NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal.

Book Foundations of an Ever Closer Union

Download or read book Foundations of an Ever Closer Union written by Mark Callanan and published by Institute of Public Administration. This book was released on 2007 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, this publication examines some of the key developments in European integration from an Irish perspective." "The book explores different aspects of Ireland's relationship with the process of European integration, including Ireland's relationship with the six founding members before it joined in 1973, and how European developments formed the backdrop to domestic debates over changing Irish economic policy in the 1950s and 1960s. The increasing importance of the European Union in different policy areas is also analysed, as is the impact the Union has had on the work of ministers and the Oireachtas, and how EU business is managed within government departments. The publication also reflects on the different amendments to the Treaty of Rome, and how Ireland has contributed to the negotiation of new treaties since the 1980s." "With contributions from both practitioners and academics, the book offers a diverse range of perspectives on how European developments have impacted on Ireland, as well as reflections on what Ireland has brought to the European integration project. In these different ways the authors offer interesting new insights into Ireland's involvement in the integration process, and illustrate how Ireland's position within the European Union has matured and entered a new phase of development."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Constitution Building in the European Union The Process of Treaty Reforms

Download or read book Constitution Building in the European Union The Process of Treaty Reforms written by Brendan Smith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the negotiations of what are termed the eight constitutional IGCs. These eight include the negotiations of the 1950s and 1960s on: the European Coal and Steel Community the European Defence and Political Community the European Economic Community and European Atomic Energy Community the Fouchet Plan the Single European Act the Maastricht Treaty the Amsterdam Treaty the Nice Treaty The book challenges the neofunctionalist and liberal intergovernmentalist perspectives that have been used in the past to explain the process of IGCs. The author presents an alternative perspective in the form of an incremental model to explain the nature of negotiations at all eight constitutional IGCs. It is also argued that the increasing frequency of IGC negotiations signifies a gradual institutionalisation of the process to the point where the constitutional IGC is becoming a regular feature on the EU's political landscape. Governments are locked into a process of constitutional IGCs that leaves the primary legal document of the EU in a state of perpetual reform. In turn, it is argued that the incrementalism that defines the IGC negotiations shapes the entire process of European integration and the general nature of the European Union.

Book Trafficking of Human Beings from a Human Rights Perspective

Download or read book Trafficking of Human Beings from a Human Rights Perspective written by Tom Obokata and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been widely accepted that trafficking of human beings is a human rights issue. However, it has been difficult to address the human rights aspects of the phenomenon in practice, because a comprehensive analysis of applicable human rights norms and principles has not been fully developed, and therefore the nature of obligations imposed upon States is not entirely clear. The purpose of this book, then, is to establish a human rights framework to promote better understanding of the multi-faceted problems inherent in trafficking of human beings, articulate obligations imposed upon States, and facilitate a holistic approach. The book also contains chapters on case studies at the national, regional, and international levels, thereby combining the theory and practice.

Book The Area of Freedom Security and Justice Ten Years on

Download or read book The Area of Freedom Security and Justice Ten Years on written by Elspeth Guild and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ) by bringing together the views of key practitioners and policy-makers who have played an outstanding role in thinking about and shaping EU policies on freedom, security and justice. Ten years ago, the member states transferred competences to the EU for law and policy-making in the fields of immigration, asylum and border controls, and began the transfer process for criminal justice and policing. This decade of European cooperation on AFSJ policies has experienced very dynamic convergence, the enactment of a large body of European law and the setting-up of numerous EU agencies working in these domains. Such dynamism in policy-making has not been without challenges and vulnerabilities, however. As this collective volume shows, the main dilemmas that lie ahead relate to an effective (while more plural) institutional framework under the Treaty of Lisbon, stronger judicial scrutiny through a greater role for national courts and the Court of Justice in Luxembourg, better mechanisms for evaluating and monitoring the implementation of EU AFSJ law and a more solid fundamental rights strategy. The contributions in this volume address the progress achieved so far in these policy areas, identify the challenges for future European cooperation in the AFSJ and put forward possible paths for making more progress in the next generation of the EU's AFSJ.
