Book The Treatment of the Trumpet in Selected Jazz influenced Classical Chamber Works of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The Treatment of the Trumpet in Selected Jazz influenced Classical Chamber Works of the Twentieth Century written by Kathleen E. Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trumpet has always maintained a central role in the jazz genre. However, throughout the history of chamber music the trumpet was overlooked until the mid-twentieth century when brass chamber music and mixed chamber ensembles rose to popularity. An infiltration of the popular American style, jazz, into classical chamber music changed composers' treatment of the trumpet. This thesis focuses on the role and treatment of the trumpet in selected jazz-influenced classical chamber works in order to highlight that the trumpet's prominence in jazz helped to establish its place in twentieth-century chamber music. A brief history of classical brass chamber music and the origins and development of jazz is given. Trumpet performance techniques and compositional practices idiomatic to the different jazz style periods, ranging from ragtime to cool jazz, are given. These techniques are then traced through selected chamber music works of Stravinsky, Martinù, Schuller, Babbitt, and Wilson. Selected works were chosen based on the degree of jazz influence and are representations of the jazz style period they emulate. A comparison of how classical composers in Europe and the United States viewed the trumpet in jazz, in regards to chamber music, is detailed over the course of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: The advancements of internet sharing, streaming, and digital recording technology in the 21st century allow musicians and listeners access to music on a global level. This cultural exposure inspires the creation of music that does not fit the traditional genre labels previously used to categorize music. With that in mind, classical music needs to follow suit and embrace this blending of concepts, styles, and genres in order to stay relevant and continue to reach new listeners. The goal of this project is to push the boundaries of what is conventionally thought of as solo repertoire for the trumpet. Five composers were selected and given the task of including stylistic characteristics from other musical genres in their compositions. The result of their efforts contain stylistic elements from jazz, pop, hip-hop, and electronic music, as well as the utilization of 20th century compositional techniques. The pieces and composers selected for this project are: Cräyons by Patrick Geren, the leaf has turned to stone by Samuel Wells, the Second Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Dr. John Hennecken, Death of a Star by the author and Drew Morton and Draw A Picture of Nobody by Brian Lewis Smith. This document discusses the background of the compositions and composers as well as provides programmatic information and topics for the consideration of future performers.

This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of my lecture is to expand the trumpet repertoire through the addition of four diverse works. This lecture recital will include live performance examples, pedagogical reasoning, background information about the composers and pieces, and some ways to make the works more accessible. Karl Pilss2 Sonata for Trumpet and Piano is an authentic German Romantic work for trumpet, which is extremely unique. Pilss2 sonata is also very useful as a study piece for intermediate to advanced students. Joseph Turrin is a prolific composer for trumpet, and his Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, his first major work for trumpet, deserves to be better known and performed more often. Interesting chamber music for trumpet is difficult to come by, but Bertold Hummel2s Trio op. 82a for Trumpet in C, Percussion, and Piano is an excellent piece in a rare medium and has a unique sound. {this is} for trumpet and piano by James Miley is an example of the future of trumpet repertoire. It was commissioned by myself in 2008, and is a classical piece written by a composer with a significant jazz background. It utilizes many different stylistic influences of the composer including jazz, classical, pop, and rock music, however, {this is} is still very accessible to players that don2t have a jazz background.
