Book The Treatment of Shortsight Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Treatment of Shortsight Classic Reprint written by J. Hirschberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment of Shortsight Last year Professor Hirschberg kindly presented me with a copy of his then recently delivered lecture on Shortsight. On reading it through I was so impressed with its value that I asked his permission to translate it into English. This he not only readily agreed to, but did all in his power to facili tate its publication. I have made as literal a translation as possible, but it has been found necessary in some instances to alter the sentences, which, although admirable in the Ger man tongue, require to be recast to suit English readers. Still, even in these cases I have endeavoured to reflect the exact meaning he wished to convey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book On Long Short and Weak Sight and Their Treatment by the Scientific Use of Spectacles Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Long Short and Weak Sight and Their Treatment by the Scientific Use of Spectacles Classic Reprint written by John Soelberg Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Long, Short, and Weak Sight, and Their Treatment by the Scientific Use of Spectacles I have endeavoured in these pages to lay before the reader, in an easy and practical form, the modern theories of the affections of the Accommodation and Refraction of the Eye, so as to enable him at once to grasp the most salient and important points in the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of these diseases. I have purposely abstained from mathe matical calculations, and have confined myself to such simple formulae as I have found most serviceable and ready in practice. I have chiefly followed the views of Von Graefe and Donders in treating of these affections indeed, we are mainly indebted to their admirable and im portant researches for the scientific elucidation and treatment of this class of eye diseases. Book The Cure of Imperfect Sight by Treatment Without Glasses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cure of Imperfect Sight by Treatment Without Glasses Classic Reprint written by W. H. Bates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cure of Imperfect Sight by Treatment Without Glasses This book aims to be a collection of facts and not of theories and insofar as it is, I do not fear successful contradiction. When explanations have been offered it has been done with considerable trepidation, because I have never been able to formulate a theory that would Withstand the test of the facts either in my possession at the time, or accumulated later. The same is true of the theories of every other man, for a theory is only a guess, and you cannot guess or imagine the truth. No one has ever satisfactorily answered the question, Why? As most scientific men are well aware, and I did not feel that I could do better than others who had tried and failed. One cannot even draw conclusions safely from facts, because a conclusion is very much like a theory, and may be disproved or modified by facts accumulated later. In the science of ophthalmology, theories, often stated as facts, have served to obscure the truth and throttle investigation for more than a hundred years. The explanations of the phenomena of sight put forward by Young, von Graefe, Helmholtz and Donders have caused us to ignore or explain away a multitude of facts which otherwise would have led to the discovery of the truth about errors of refraction and the consequent pre vention of an incalculable amount of human misery. Book The Ophthalmic Record Vol 7 October 1898 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Record, Vol. 7: October, 1898 It is evident that such cases must necessarily be classed with those of excessive myopia, owing to their inseparable resemblance, and for the latter as well as the former ones, surgery alone affords relief. It is equally certain that in these exceptional ones the results of surgical treatment will be more favorable. It would appear, however, that in this country there exists a marked scarcity of number, so far as these cases of excessive myopia are con cerned, and which must occasionally include just such cases as the present one, for which surgical interference, having for its purpose the removal of the lens, is indicated. This method has, as we know, been practiced on such a large and successful scale in Europe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Handbook of the Diseases of the Eye

Download or read book A Handbook of the Diseases of the Eye written by Henry R. Swanzy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Diseases of the Eye: And Their Treatment The fifth edition of this book was issued in January, 1895, and has been for some months out of print. In this edition the pages in the first chapter of former editions on Some Elementary Optics have been omitted to make room in the book for other matter. After all, it may be reasonably expected that the student will bring with him to the study of eye disease, not only a good knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, but also that acquaintance with optical laws which is required for the proper understanding of the refraction and accommodation of the eye, and of the theory of the ophthalmoscope. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Squint: Its Causes, Pathology, and Treatment By examining a very large number of cases of squint, and watching the results of treatment during a number of years, and by investigating the visual functions of normal-sighted people, I have endeavoured to learn the causes and pathology of squint. The methods of treatment which I employ are the outcome of these observations. In cases of constant unilateral convergent squint, the usual routine treatment, by glasses and operation, gives extremely unsatisfactory results. In about one-third of these cases, the wearing of glasses causes the eyes, after a time, to become "straight." In the other two-thirds, the deformity may be more or less removed by operation. But, more often than not, the deviating eye becomes very blind, and the acquisition of any sort of binocular vision is quite the exception. The conduct of the busy practitioner towards such ocular affections as occur in his practice usually differs from his treatment of most other diseases. The acquirement of even a moderate degree of knowledge respecting diseases of the eye - especially those requiring the use of the ophthalmoscope necessitates considerable study and frequent chances for observation. The every-day routine of practice affords neither Opportunities for the one nor time for the other, and it is not, therefore, surprising that such cases are usually referred to a confrere who makes a special study of them.
