Book Report of the Secretary and Financial Report of the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents

Download or read book Report of the Secretary and Financial Report of the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents written by Smithsonian Institution and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Secretary and Financial Report of the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents: For the Year Ending June 30, 1963 In the pages that follow, reports of the activities of each of the bureaus Of the Smithsonian present in some detail the story of the year. Additions to the collections, publications, new exhibits, new research findings, and explorations are all described. The year's most notable development has been the progress made in the completion of the great new Museum of History and Tech nology Building. This marble structure will be one of the largest and one of the most modern and effective museums in the world. Its 50 public exhibition halls will almost certainly be viewed each year by at least 5 million visitors. The building has been planned so that access to exhibits and the movement of visitors through the halls will be as convenient as possible and produce a minimum Of What is often all too accurately called museum fatigue. In planning each new exhibit an effort has been made to make every display a complete instructional unit. Space has also been set aside for the great study collections of the Institution in the fields of history and technology, containing objects that are not on public exhibition but that are of importance to the thousands of research scholars, specialists, and collectors who come to the Smithsonian every year to learn more in detail about some particular field of inquiry. The new east-n addition to the National History Building, virtu ally completed by the end of the year, has been occupied by staff scientists. Many of the great biological and geological study and research collections of the Institution have been moved into space provided in this Wing. The completion Of these additional facilities, when supplemented by the later completion Of the west Wing, will again allow the opening of some large public halls of the Natural History Building that have had to be closed for many years in order to provide Space for research activities. During the more than 50 years between the completion of this great Natural History Building and the construction of these new wings, much exhibition space had necessarily been encroached upon. Now these fine halls, originally planned for natural-history exhibitions, can be returned to their proper use.
