Book excerpt: This publication documents The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of early colonial furniture and presents a broad spectrum of furniture forms made in America during the 17th and early 18th centuries, including chairs and other seating, tables, boxes, various types of chests and cupboards, dressing tables, and desks. Over 140 objects are thoroughly described, with detailed information given on each one's construction, condition, dimensions, materials, and inscriptions and other marks, as well as provenance and exhibition history. Every object is explained in terms of the styles and craftsmanship of the period and evaluated in light of comparative pieces in public and private collections throughout the country. Also included is one appendix containing photographic details of construction and decorative elements, and another with line drawings explaining furniture terms and showing various types of joints and moldings. Download or read book The Museum written by Michael S. Sharpiro and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1990-07-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical bibliography of museum studies comprises an organized collection of essays on the various types of museums--art, natural history, history, science and technology, and folk--and on general aspects--collections, education, exhibitions, etc.--that cut across the media. Most of the essays are cogent, substantial if not comprehensive, and clear. The editor has taken care to see that they follow a similar format of historical essay followed by a full bibliography of items discussed. Library Journal As the number of museums in the United States has grown to more than 6500 in this century, the museum profession has experienced similar growth. In addition to academic training and accreditation programs in the field, an expanding body of literature on museum history, philosophy, and functions has evolved, little of which has received the critical attention it deserves. This reference volume serves as an up-to-date guide to this wealth of literature, identifying and evaluating works that introduce the general reader, the museum studies student, and the beginning professional to the history, philosophy, and functions of museums. The volume presents a series of informative, historical outlines and critical bibliographic essays on all aspects of museum history, philosophy, and functions. Contributors treat such subjects as art museums, natural history museums, science and technology museums, history museums, collections, exhibition, education and interpretation, and the public and museums. Each chapter consists of an introductory historical narrative, a survey of sources, and a bibliographic checklist that contains cited and additional sources. A set of appendices include a geographically organized bibliography of museum directories, a guide to archives and special collections, and a selective list of museum-related periodicals. The book concludes with a comprehensive general subject index. This work will be an important reference tool for museum professionals and cultural historians, as well as for courses in museum studies. It will also be a valuable addition to both academic and public libraries.

Book excerpt: Merchant John Banister (1707-1767) of Newport, Rhode Island, wore many hats: exporter, importer, wholesaler, retailer, money-lender, extender of credit and insurer, owner and outfitter of sailing vessels, and ship builder for the slave trade. His recently discovered accounting records reveal his role in transforming colonial trade in mid-18th century America. He combined business acumen and a strong work ethic with knowledge of the law and new technologies. Through his maritime activities and real estate development, he was a rain-maker for artisans, workers and producers, contributing to income opportunities for businesswomen, freemen and slaves. Drawing on Banister's meticulous daybooks, ledgers, letters and receipts, the author analyzes his contribution to the economic history of colonial America, highlighting the complexity of the commerce of the era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mother's family history extends back to the early sixteenth-century England. William Short was born on March 3, 1613 in Brewood, Staffordshire and was a lower-level member of the English establishment. He received a land grant from the Crown and joined a privately-funded expedition as a young man and voyaged west to the New World. He landed at the colony of Virginia, so named by Walter Raleigh for his reigning monarch then known as the Virgin Queen Elizabeth. Walter Raleigh, although never traveling to the Virginia Colony, popularized smoking tobacco in the Virgin Queen's court. William Short died as a young man on April 6, 1659. He was married to Elizabeth Symonds, and they had two children. His will is recorded in Surry County, Virginia, and is one of the oldest to exist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. After the Short family gained a foothold in the New World, we look forward across more than six generations to 1819 and the birth of Burwell B. Short in Pittsylvania County. Burwell married Francis Ann George on February 7, 1848. They had eleven children, including my grandfather, Samuel David Short, who was born November 7, 1864 at the tail end of the American Civil War. Samuel David married Ella Jackson Scruggs in 1894 and worked as a tobacco farmer on the family homestead in Pittsylvania County. They raised a family of nine children, including my mother Fannie Janet, who was born on February 11, 1911. My mother married and had two sons. My last trip to the farm came when I was sixteen. I graduated from high school and served a tour in the United States Air Force before graduating from college and marrying my wife who is the daughter of a NASA scientist. His specialty was space science and applications with emphasis on sounding rockets. He explains that his sounding rockets will leave the solar system long after his demise and slice across our galaxy. They will enter the universe beyond and continue on an endless voyage long after he has passed sway. NDO, 1.27.18

Book excerpt: After inheriting an old seaside house, a professor finds it haunted by supernatural mysteries Though he likes to joke about the spirit world, William Porter does not really believe in ghosts. As a professor, he cannot afford to take seriously that which goes bump in the night. But his wife, Jane, is prone to visions, like the one she had last summer about William’s uncle Horace lying dead on the floor—a dream that came just hours before they got the news that the old man had passed away. A year later, William plans to spend the summer at his recently inherited beachfront property with Jane, but a feeling of psychic dread gives her hesitation, and William will later regret convincing her to go. The house is musty, eerie, and littered with supernatural portents—most chillingly, the faint red light that glows in the wee hours. If they don’t escape soon, William and his wife may be visiting the spirit world themselves.
