Book A Book of Verse for Boys and Girls Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Verse for Boys and Girls, Vol. 1 With children who have learned to read the pleasure of poetry is not all sensuous: the emotions, too, begin to be stirred. Now we cannot make children feel poetry unless we feel it ourselves and show that we do so by our manner of reading or repeating it. Some explanation will be needed here and there to make the ideas clear enough to be felt: more than this runs the risk of explaining the charm away. If a poem is to delight the mind as well as the ear, it should first be read or said as a whole; for it is only the whole that properly has meaning. Most short poems that are worth knowing are worth knowing by heart. But if these poems be studied and enjoyed as I have said, it matters little how many verses are deliberately learned by heart. Verses that are used to train the voice should no doubt be learned as a set task. But beyond this there is little need to mak a task of an exercise whose true end is to lay up permanent possibilities of delight. That end will be best attained if, after the poems have been studied and enjoyed, the children are left to choose for themselves what pieces they will learn by heart. If the book is in their hands for a year or two, those who have a gift for verse will be found to have learned most of it; the others might try at least to learn one poem from each section. Book One Thousand Poems for Children

Download or read book One Thousand Poems for Children written by Roger Ingpen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Thousand Poems for Children: A New Choice of the Best Verse Old New As perhaps nothing leaves a more lasting impression on the memory than the poems one learns in childhood, it is important that children should be provided with poetry that is both pleasant to read and profitable to remember, and it is to meet these two needs that the present volume has been prepared. In compiling the work, the two objects which have primarily been kept in mind are the claim of poetry and the demand of the children; but, since the collection is intended chiefly for the pleasure of our boys and girls, the demand of the children has been considered first. For this reason, most of the old favorites which, because of their very familiarity, deserve a place in all collections of children's verse, have been selected, together with a generous quantity of nursery rhymes; but it has been deemed wise also to include the most desirable specimens of recent juvenile poetry. The form of verse that first appeals to the young is that of a mere pleasing repetition of sound and rhythm without regard to meaning; but this soon gives way to the little story, quite simple and simply told, it is true, but which nevertheless conveys an idea. The story continues to hold its place in the affection of the child until the period of youth is reached, when abstract subjects in poetry begin to offer attraction, and a child cannot be said really to care for poetry in the true sense until this time arrives. Book The Children s First Book of Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Children s First Book of Poetry Classic Reprint written by Emilie Kip Baker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's First Book of Poetry We hear much nowadays about the decline of poetry. No one reads poetry any more. Poets cannot make a living. The world has ceased to express its ideals in verse. The novel and the short story, rather than the epic or the lyric, furnish our instruction and our inspiration. The magazine and the newspaper are our substitute for a library; and these print verses only to fill out a column or a page. In short, we are living in a reflective, a scientific, a prose age. So we are told. Like most generalizations about the complex phenomena of modern life, this is only partially true. Every year brings new volumes of dramatic, narrative, and lyric poetry of high merit. Yeats, Synge, and Phillips; Noyes, Masefield, and Gibson; - these and scores of other names come to mind to prove that the gift of song has not fled the earth. Nor are the old poets forgotten.
