Book The Other Side of the Hill

Download or read book The Other Side of the Hill written by Don Nixon, PhD and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When tourists visit Canada's Parliament Hill, they see the beautiful Parliament Buildings, and the Mounted Police in their world-famous uniforms, and if they want they can tune in their televisions and watch the politicians arguing on Question Period. This is one side of the Hill, but there is another side - a side filled with behind the scenes stories. If you are interested in learning about the terrible discomfort our hard-working politicians had to endure in the hot, smelly Centre Block during the Victorian era, then this book is definitely for you! Learn about the fire of 1916 and that it probably was not an accident. Find out the surprising way workers used to make the copper roofs go green and why Queen Victoria's magnificent lion might be a tad lacking. With this book, written with flair and humor, Don Nixon takes you on a behind the scenes journey that not only has its pitfalls and pratfalls, it holds the determined spirit of a young nation up for all to see and admire.

Book The Ottawa River Canal System

Download or read book The Ottawa River Canal System written by Normand Lafrenière and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a brief history of the Ottawa River canal system from the time construction began until 1963. Although the Carillon Canal (a national historic park) would normally have been the focal point of such an undertaking, a specific study of this canal proved virtually impossible owing to the lack of information pertaining to its initial construction period. Records of the commercial use of the canal over the years were equally sparse. Fortunately, however, the history of the Carillon Canal is closely linked with that of several other canals (the Vaudreuil, St. Anne's, Chute-a-Blondau, and Grenville canals) constructed on the lower Ottawa River in the early 19th century. As a consequence this study encompasses the entire Ottawa River canal system.

Book The Early History of Elora Ontario and Vicinity

Download or read book The Early History of Elora Ontario and Vicinity written by John Connon and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elora: The Early History of Elora and Vicinity provides little-known details about the settlement and development of the Elora area in southern Ontario from the earliest settler in 1817. Then, as now, people were drawn to the Elora Gorge and the rocky banks of the Grand River. The book is a compilation of material that appeared weekly in The Elora Express between 1906 and 1909 with some additional material from the 1920s. Connon traces the settlers as they arrive and reports on the development of the town as they acquired a grist mill, a store, a bridge, and inevitably a railway. Rich with genealogical information, this is an important historical document. Introduction by Gerald Noonan.
