Despite-the fact. That there has been a considerable loss of revenue consequent on the exemption from fees of members serving with the colours, the financial position of the Institute is unimpaired. This is owing chiefly to the efforts of the 'membership Committee, ' appointed by Council, who succeeded in influencing a large increase in the membership during the year. In this connection thanks are due in particular to Mr. E. E. Campbell, Mr. J. E. Murphy, Mr. J. T. Stirling, Mr. J. H. Stovel, and Mr. Geo. Wilkinson for their zealous and devoted labours. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, Vol. 17: 1914 In my presidential address last year I emphasized the national importance Of mining, pointing out that in a consider able degree the future prosperity Of Canada rests on the dis covery and exploitation of mineral resources within its borders. Of the square miles representing Canada's total area, square miles are underlaid bv rocks which give promise of holding mineral deposits Of economic importance. At pres ent we are not doing enough towards acquiring knowledge respecting the natural resources of our great hinterland. By the rate we develop our mineral resources, especially those of coal and iron, shall our industrial progress and our standing among civilized nations be measured. Ivhile our coal mining industry has made a steady and a substantial growth, the industry of iron mining is an entirely insignificant one in Canada. It is therefore essential that steps should be taken to remedy this condition. A preliminary effort to this end has already been made, and recently a strong and well supported movement was inaugurated the aim Of which is to secure for the industry some assistance from Government. This suggestion is em bodied in the form Of a resolution, which is prefaced by a brief but forceful recital of the principal facts, and was presented the other day to the Toronto Board of Trade. The resolution reads as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Canadian Mining Journal Vol 44

Download or read book Canadian Mining Journal Vol 44 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Mining Journal, Vol. 44: July-December 1923 The diagram above shows the relative size of a gear and a belt drive of the same capacity. Also the gears would only be about one-third as wide as the pulleys. The saving in space is great. Gear drives are safer than belts because on account of their small size it is much easier to guard them effectively. The guards on a gear can frequently be made to form a complete enclosure containing an oil bath. This will promote the efficiency of the drive to such an extent as to be a paying investment of itself, so that the safety guard really costs nothing extra. As a rule gears are more durable than belts, and. For the service they perform, are far cheaper in the long run. There is much less load on the bearings with gears, for belts only transmit power in proportion to the difference between the tensions on the tight and slack side. There is no fire risk with gears like that. Arising in dusty locations with belts, from static sparks or friction from rubbing against guards. The saving of valuable space by the use of a com pact gear drive is often of prime importance. Gears, especially rawhide pinions, or in large sizes the her ringbone gear drives, lend themselves especially well to the individual electric motor drive in industrial plants. Gears are more efficient than belts. Due to the ah sence of slip and creep. Creep is always present in belts and slip usually so. With gears there is no slip. There fore no loss. The best way to get rid of your belting troubles is to replace the belts, wherever possible, with gears and plan to use gears on new drives.
