Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of the Imagination Such as it is, I have made no attempt to re -model or te-write it, and must therefore ask indulgence for certain colloquialisms and levities of style, which render it, I fear, more suitable to an audience of private individuals, than to that larger and more exacting public, to which it has now the audacity to appeal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education Through the Imagination Popular opinion does not incline to regard imagina tion as a very important faculty for all. The imaginative person is usually regarded as a visionary. Poets, painters, romancers, children - these are supposed to represent the imaginatives. People enjoy their works more or less and indulge them in their fancies as children. But they are apt to regard imagination as a kind of weak ness in'practical men. Book Imagination and Its Place in Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Imagination and Its Place in Education Classic Reprint written by Edwin A. Kirkpatrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imagination and Its Place in Education Science embodies universal truths. Literature expresses truth as seen or exemplified by individuals. Neither literature nor the science of psychology alone can adequately deal with the subject of imagination. Psychology seeks to present what is true of all minds, but in no type of mental activity is there greater individuality than in the exercise of the imagination. The writer, in his many years of teaching psychology, has enjoyed this subject because tests given students and their reports of introspective studies show that the same laws govern all minds, though they are partly disguised by an infinite variety of image combinations. No topic reveals to students more clearly their mental processes and at the same time shows them that other persons arrive at the same results by different routes. It gives the author satisfaction, therefore, to share with a larger group than that comprising his own students the pleasure and advantage to be derived from a study of so interesting a subject. He hopes that this little book will introduce many to a study of the facts in the realm of imagination as exemplified in their own minds and in the minds of others, especially children, and as revealed in play, science, art, and literature. With this end in view, scientific technicalities and exhaustive treatment have intentionally been avoided. But the re action I got was curious. Some took to the idea at sight, and having much more Vivid imaginations than I, evolved most exciting situations and fascinating charac ters. Others found the Personals silly or worse and obviously thought the same Of me for my interest in them. Then too the same name and message would be interpreted in the most varied ways by different people and I discovered that I could find out a great deal about the disposition and habit Of mind of a person, even of a stranger, by what he or she made out of one of these anonymous fragments of feeling. It was great fun to pass a Personal around a company and ask them all to write down or to tell at once what they saw in it. Some. Book Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child

Download or read book Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child written by Anthony Esolen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Play dates, soccer practice, day care, political correctness, drudgery without facts, television, video games, constant supervision, endless distractions: these and other insidious trends in child rearing and education are now the hallmarks of childhood. As author Anthony Esolen demonstrates in this elegantly written, often wickedly funny book, almost everything we are doing to children now constricts their imaginations, usually to serve the ulterior motives of the constrictors. Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child takes square aim at these accelerating trends, in a bitingly witty style reminiscent of C. S. Lewis, while offering parents—and children—hopeful alternatives. Esolen shows how imagination is snuffed out at practically every turn: in the rearing of children almost exclusively indoors; in the flattening of love to sex education, and sex education to prurience and hygiene; in the loss of traditional childhood games; in the refusal to allow children to organize themselves into teams; in the effacing of the glorious differences between the sexes; in the dismissal of the power of memory, which creates the worst of all possible worlds in school—drudgery without even the merit of imparting facts; in the strict separation of the child’s world from the adult’s; and in the denial of the transcendent, which places a low ceiling on the child’s developing spirit and mind. But Esolen doesn’t stop at pointing out the problem; he offers clear solutions as well. With charming stories from his own boyhood and an assist from the master authors and thinkers of the Western tradition, Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child is a welcome respite from the overwhelming banality of contemporary culture. Interwoven throughout this indispensable guide to child rearing is a rich tapestry of the literature, music, art, and thought that once enriched the lives of American children. Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child confronts contemporary trends in parenting and schooling by reclaiming lost traditions. This practical, insightful book is essential reading for any parent who cares about the paltry thing that childhood has become, and who wants to give a child something beyond the dull drone of today’s culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cultivation and Use of Imagination In my Rectorial address, on the other hand, I was bound to observe a more academic tone, and, while following out a cognate line of thought, I attempted to give it a somewhat more scientific and elaborate treatment. But allowance being made for the difference in the occasions, and in the audiences which called forth those two addresses, I hope the reader may nevertheless find in them an identity of feeling reflecting my most earnest desire to promote the cultivation of one side of our human faculties, the neglect of which I con sider would be most harmful both in social and national respects. Book Unformulated Experience

Download or read book Unformulated Experience written by Donnel B. Stern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerful and wonderfully accessible meditation on psychoanalysis, hermeneutics, and social constructivism, Donnel Stern explores the relationship between two fundamental kinds of experience: explicit verbal reflection and "unformulated experience," or experience we have not yet reflected on and put into words. Stern is especially concerned with the process by which we come to formulate the unformulated. It is not an instrumental task, he holds, but one that requires openness and curiosity; the result of the process is not accuracy alone, but experience that is deeply felt and fully imagined. Stern's sense of explicit verbal experience as continuously constructed and emergent leads to a central dialectic at the heart of his work: that between curiosity and imagination, on one hand, and dissociation and unthinking acceptance of the familiar on the other. The goal of psychoanalytic work, he holds, is the freedom to be curious, whereas defense signifies the denial of this freedom. We defend against our fear of what we would think, that is, if we allowed ourselves the freedom to think it. Stern also shows how the unconscious itself can be reconceptualized hermeneutically, and he goes on to explore the implications of this viewpoint on interpretation and countertransference. He is especially persuasive in showing how the interpersonal field, which is continuously in flux, limits the experience that it is possible for participants to reflect on. Thus it is that analyst and patient are together "caught in the grip of the field," often unable to see the kind of relatedness in which they are mutually involved. A brilliant demonstration of the clinical consequentiality of hermeneutic thinking, Unformulated Experience bears out Stern's belief that psychoanalysis is as much about the revelation of the new in experience as it is about the discovery of the old
