Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of the Body for Games, Athletics, Gymnastics, and Other Forms There are many excellent Papers on the subject Of health. In America alone there are three, viz. Good Health Health Culture and Physical Culture'. England has several similar publications, Of which Sandow's is one. These are well worth taking in regularly and studying carefully, and they are very widely read, but somehow by themselves they do not produce enough effect upon the public. People rush through the pages, and then little remains in the memory. The same applies to the hundreds of Magazines which are published every year. In them are many valuable and interesting statistics, which, however, it is almost impossible to remember a week after one has read them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of the Body for Games, Athletics, Gymnastics, and Other Forms National Education on the subject of Health, Training, and Athletics is terribly haphazard, if indeed it can be said to exist at all. There is much knowledge, and there is abundant literature, but these have not yet influenced us as a Nation. What we need is something to arrest the attention of the reader; reading seems to have become too easy. It does not impress itself upon our minds. We read without putting into practice. In this book I have tried to enforce the arguments, partly by allowing them to take up a good deal of space, and partly by marking the important words with capital letters. This method is not altogether to be approved of, but I have found it very helpful in reading many books. Capitals call the attention to the most essential points, and, if the excessive use of capitals in this book achieves the same end, there will be something to recommend the method. It had occurred to me to put stars which might remind the reader to pause and realise the meaning of certain sections, and to apply the suggestions to himself. But I preferred the use of capitals. There have been many other difficulties in editing a book of this kind, and especially was it difficult to treat Dr. Schmidt's great work satisfactorily. First of all, I had differences of opinion, which were based on personal experience. For example, I could not agree with him that skill cannot be increased after the age of thirty, nor could I agree with him that flesh foods are necessary for health or training. Then, again, I had to add a great deal to his advice. There were some recent researches in America, and there was the large subject of Games. His work deals mainly with gymnastic exercises, such as marching at the word of command. I have of course been unable to treat of all Games, which would require a volume to themselves. I can only lay down general principles, hoping that readers will work them out for themselves in special Games. For the value of this form of exercise is increasing in proportion as city life is increasing at the expense of country life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Athletic Gymnastic Exercises Gums of every description formed a most important part of the national events of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The principal of the four games publicly solemnised in Greece were the Olympic; but games of different kinds were exercised by the early Romans, which consisted of chariot and horse-racin g, combats, and theatrical sports. They likewise exercised them selves before bathing in leaping, running, throwing the javelin, quoit, &c. The athletic exercises practised among these nations consisted of wrestling, boxing, and other such exercises, requiring great strength. Prizes were given to those who came of victors, likewise many privileges were granted to them. The Olympic games, the chief of the festivals of the Greeks, were celebrated every fifth year, and consisted of religious ceremonies, athletic contests, and races. Book Dick s Art of Gymnastics

Download or read book Dick s Art of Gymnastics written by William B. Dick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dick's Art of Gymnastics: Containing Practical and Progressive Exercises Applicable to All the Principal Apparatus of a Well-Appointed Gymnasium Plainly Described The importance of physical training for the development of muscle and strengthening the human frame has always been freely admitted, and in modern times athletic exercises and field sports form a necessary adjunct to a thorough or collegiate education. In the early and palmy days of Ancient Greece, periodical exhibitions of individual prowess in feats combining strength, agility and skill were deemed of national importance, and the celebrated Games at Olympia and other prominent places always attracted crowds of visitors, and were highly appreciated by all who assisted at them. In all these games the contestants for supremacy and fame were stripped almost nude, and hence the term Gymnast is applied to the votaries of Athletic skill, being derived from a Greek word signifying naked. Those ancient Games included Racing, Wrestling, and various field Sports, which in modern times are classed under Athletics, the term Gymnastics being specially given to the exercises performed by the aid of those appliances which constitute the modern Gymnasium. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sporting Blackness examines issues of race and representation in sports films, exploring what it means to embody, perform, play out, and contest blackness by representations of Black athletes on screen. By presenting new critical terms, Sheppard analyzes not only “skin in the game,” or how racial representation shapes the genre’s imagery, but also “skin in the genre,” or the formal consequences of blackness on the sport film genre’s modes, codes, and conventions. Through a rich interdisciplinary approach, Sheppard argues that representations of Black sporting bodies contain “critical muscle memories”: embodied, kinesthetic, and cinematic histories that go beyond a film’s plot to index, circulate, and reproduce broader narratives about Black sporting and non-sporting experiences in American society.
