Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Teachers The first thing to be considered is the fact that the train ing of teachers, as the phrase is now understood, had pre viously been wholly neglected throughout the country. Teachers had no other preparation for their work than their natural aptitude for the art, their knowledge of the subjects which they taught, and such practical lessons as they learned in their school rooms. As respects their academic prepa ration, they presented, as a class, a very motley appearance, as a cursory view of the schools of the country will abun dantly Show. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training the Teacher Teacher-training Needed. - No more serious problem faces the Sunday-school to-day than the question of securing more teachers and better teaching. We owe it to those who are called to teach the Word to see that means of thorough preparation be brought within their reach. The best teachers will welcome a better training for Christ's service and many good people who have not found their place in the work of the church will gladly engage in Sunday-school teaching after they have been specially instructed in the Bible and in the principles of teaching. This book provides the essential elements for the teacher-training course in four sections: (1) The Bible material which is the basis for all Sunday-school instruction, under the title of "The Book," by Dr. Schauffler. (2) A study of the working of the mind at various ages and under differing conditions (a brief study of psychology), under the title of "The Pupil," by Mrs. Lamoreaux. (3) A study of teaching principles and the application of these principles (a brief study of pedagogy), under the title of "The Teacher," by Dr. Brumbaugh. (4) A study of the place in which this instruction should be given, that is, "The School," by Mr. Lawrance. Additional material for instruction will be found in the chapter "How the Bible came to Us" by Professor Ira Maurice Price, and "The Gist of the Books." Starting a Class. - (1) No better beginning can be made than a prayerful conference between the pastor and the Sunday-school superintendent to determine the need and possibilities of teacher-training within the local school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching the Teacher: A First Book in Teacher Training A recent book intimates that there are three kinds of Sunday-school teachers. Some are so poor that they must be forgiven by those who had the disadvantage of having Christianity interpreted through their words and spirit. Some are so colorless, so neutral, so neither poor nor rich, that they are forgotten by those who in years of youth had no Christian impression made upon them by their responsible teachers. Some are so good and wise that they are forever remembered with that honor which is partly love and partly reverence. Such teachers of Christianity have an imperishable memory. It is to help those who aspire to play their part in fulfilling the Great Commission, and thereby to achieve that Imperishable memory, that this teacher-training textbook has been prepared. The book specializes on the history of God's redeeming grace. It reviews Old Testament history, disclosing the stream of God's redeeming purposes flowing down through the older times. It reviews New Testament history, disclosing the broadening and deepening of that purpose for us men and for mankind in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and his Church. It reviews the history of that Church in the world. It introduces the student to the study of the human spirit, made in the likeness of God. It discusses the organization of the Church in order to carry out the Great Commission, particularly among the children and youth whose minds and hearts and consciences God has designed for that spiritual development which we call religious education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Teachers and Methods of Instruction: Selected Papers The effect of this action on the part of the Privy Council has been most beneficial. Almost all now recognize that there is an art of teaching and of school-keeping, and that primary teachers should be trained in that art. It is only among that class of teachers and professors who have never come into close contact with the existing system of training that doubts and objections survive. Quietly, and almost unnoticed, a great new Institution has established itself in the United Kingdom, and has overpowered every possible theoretical objection to its existence by the practical benefits it has conferred on the country. It is therefore too late now to discuss the general question. -the practical result is before us, and the occupation of teacher has been finally raised into a profession by requiring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training School Furthermore of 79 teachers who had done practice teaching as a preparation for later teaching, 69 reported that it had much value; eight that it had moderate value; two that it had little value. The purpose of this survey of the teacher training facilities in Colo rado State Teachers College, then is two-fold: (1) to present impartially facts concerning organization, material, methods, defects and advan tages of the system, so that they may become common knowledge to all administrators or others interested in the training of teachers, who desire it; and (2) (the much more important purpose) to bring to the members of the faculty of the College, a conscious realization of the problems and short-comings; to bring about a more definite unity of purpose on the part of the faculty; a more thorough realization that the College exists for the sole purpose of the training of teachers, that the training school is the central, most positive agency in the school for the realization of this purpose, and finally that the success or failure of the training school in accomplishing this definite purpose, depends largely on each member of the faculty, be he Dean, Director of the Training School, Training Teacher, or the most insignificant assistant in the institution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Professional Training of Secondary Teachers in the United States Within the last century the educational advancement, at least in the more progressive nations, has been so rapid, the scientific spirit so pronounced, and the differentiation and increased complexity of subject-matter so great, that it has become necessary to simplify the processes of education by more expert teaching. The science of education, depending as it does for much Of its material upon the scientific advancement in other fields of thought, has been slow in its development. But the growth of this subject in late years has been rapid and encouraging. Along with the advancement of the science of education has come a deeper interest in the science and art of teaching and in the professional training of teachers. Book The Training of Teachers in England and Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Training of Teachers in England and Wales Classic Reprint written by Peter Sandiford and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Teachers in England and Wales The purpose of this study is to give a systematic and critical account of the training of teachers in England and Wales. The systems in vogue in Scotland and Ireland differ fundamentally from the English system and consequently fall outside the scope of this work. The study is the outcome of researches made during the past two years in the Departments of Elementary Education and of Educational Administration at Teachers College. To these researches have been added the practical knowledge and experience gained as a lecturer in the Education Department of the University of Manchester - a day training college recognized under the regulations of the English Board of Education. A brief account of the administration of education in England and Wales has been given to serve as a background for the work. In addition, the history of the subject from Elizabethan times has been traced. Since the government is assuming responsibility for the training of secondary school teachers, art teachers, teachers of domestic arts and other subjects, a chapter dealing with these aspects of the problem has been introduced. The main portion of the work is, however, devoted to the description of the training and service of elementary school teachers. This Contribution is the third of a series on similar topics, the other two of which are Farrington, "The Public Primary School System of France, with special reference to the training of teachers"; and Kandel, "The Training of Elementary Teachers in Germany." Book The Training School Quarterly Vol 7

Download or read book The Training School Quarterly Vol 7 written by Mamie E. Jenkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training School Quarterly, Vol. 7: July, August, September, 1920 Books on child study are apt to stress the instinctive basis of a child's nature. This is as it should be. We must know of the influences that go to make mind, family, race, sex, maturity. But we must not forget that these factors come into contact with another, environment. Heredity determines the ability to assimilate knowledge, environment furnishes the material of which the particular bits of knowledge which a child possesses is made. We need then a study of the contents of children's minds, and while the investigations which' have been made along that line are valuable and suggestive, they cannot take the place of a real first-hand study of the child's environment. I am rather of the opinion that we should make time if, instead of starting to cram knowledge into the child as soon as he starts to school, we should spend much time exploring the recesses of his mind to find out what he already has stored away in it. That would save us from teaching what, as Dodd says, he always knowed, as well as from teaching something which the child is utterly unable to grasp because of a lack of experiences, or which he grasps incorrectly because of faulty bases of knowledge. For some time we have been giving lip service to the doctrine that the teacher should teach children that subject-matter is a means to an end. I believe that it is largely lip service only because in the training of teachers we still place the great emphasis of time, effort and teachers on subject-matter with very little time given to, the study of the child. I believe it, further, because teachers in schools spend much time teaching subject - matter and little time studying their children. Teachers must always keep in mind that it is the child that is important; the child gives us our work to do. When we have our schools constructed upona scientific basis I believe that we shall be able to know children as well as it is possible to know subject-matter, and when that is true we shall be able to accomplish many fold what we are now accomplishing. So much of our teaching is now a hit or miss aflair. So much of our subject really doesn't make any difference anyway. We're getting better, but we've a long way to go. Three hundred thousand new teachers and officers will be enlisted within the coming year in the ranks of Sunday school workers. Many of these are young men and women of education, but many more are urged into service with little information or training for the duties before them. While many training schools and classes are offered them through the varied agencies, denominational and interdenominational, yet all of these united fail to meet the need for a trained teaching force. Even were all of these new teachers well equipped, they are not sufficient for the great work. A full half million are needed to meet the responsibilities pressing upon the churches for the religious teach ing of childhood and youth. Within the last three years there has been an increase of one million in enrollment in North America, and even this number could be enlarged by hundreds of thousands if a sufficient number of competent teachers would answer the call of the Church.
