L. Kandel and published by . This book was released on 1915 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accompanying report deals with the mathematical training of prospective teachers in elementary schools as described in the reports submitted by the International Commission of the Teaching of Mathematics to the Fifth International Congress of Mathematicians, held at Cambridge, England, in August, 1912. A comparative study of the facts presented in these reports is of interest for those engaged in the training of teachers in this country, if only because they indicate that the standards elsewhere are as chaotic as they are here. The requirements of the normal schools, or corresponding institutions vary from a review of the elementary-school arithmetic to the mathematics required for entrance to colleges and universities; or, from another point of view, from an emphasis on the purely professional needs limited to the immediate requirements of the elementary schools, to academic and cultural aims founded on the principle that the more a teacher knows about the subject, in addition to the purely professional training, the more successful will be his teaching. But, great as is the variety of standards and aims in Europe, almost every standard finds a parallel in this country, owing to the absence of uniformity--a condition almost paralleled in England and Switzerland. But, if a generalization may be permitted, it would be true to say that the academic standards in the best systems are higher in the more advanced countries of Europe than they are in the United States. Countries included in this report are: (1) Belgium; (2) Denmark; (3) England; (4) France; (5) Germany; (6) Hungary; (7) Italy; (8) Russia; (9) Sweden; (10) Switzerland; and (11) the United States. A bibliography is included. (Contains 2 footnotes.) [This bulletin was written with the editorial cooperation of David Eugene Smith, William F. Osgood, and J.W.A. Young. H. Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1915 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this report is to give an account, in such a form as to allow comparisons, of the instruction in mathematics in the Lower and Middle Commercial and Industrial Schools in the countries reporting to the International Commission on the Teaching of Mathematics. The data of this report have been taken entirely from the reports of the international commission, except in the cases of Great Britain, Germany and the United States. In these cases certain other sources of information, such as official school reports, have been consulted. The countries included in this report are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The reports of the international commission give a very brief treatment of the commercial and industrial schools in certain countries, and consequently the discussion of the schools of those countries is brief in the present report. The first part of this report consists of an account of the schools considered, arranged according to countries. This account contains, so far as the facts are available, a brief statement of the organization of each type of school, the entrance requirements, length of the course, by whom supported, aim of the school and of the mathematical instruction, courses of study in mathematics, methods of instruction in mathematics, preparation of the teachers, examinations, and present tendencies. The second part gives in tabular form, so far as the facts are available, for each type of school in each country the following facts: The number of years of previous school attendance required for entrance; the approximate age at entrance; the number of years in the course; the number of hours a week spent in the school; the number of hours a week given to the study of mathematics; and the course of study in mathematics. There is given, finally (pp. 94-96), a list of the kinds of schools here considered and the terms used as equivalents in this report. An account of the teaching of mathematics in the commercial and industrial schools of the United States is given in the Reports of Committees I, II, III, IV, and V of the American Subcommission of the International Commission. As these reports are readily available, it has been thought necessary in the present report to give only a brief summary of this work and to refer to the original committee reports for further details. Individual sections contains footnotes. [This bulletin was written with the editorial cooperation of David Eugene Smith, William F. Osgood, and J. W. A. Young. Best copy available has been provided.

Download or read book The Training of Teachers of Mathematics for the Secondary Schools of the Countries Represented in the International Commission on the Teaching of Mathematics Bulletin 1917 written by Raymond Clare Archibald and published by . This book was released on 1918 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin is based upon reports to the International Commission on the Teaching of Mathematics concerning the development of the teacher of mathematics in the better secondary schools of different countries. For the most part, only those schools which are under the immediate direction of the Government have been considered. And even here discussion is limited to the best schools for boys and to the teachers in such schools. As a rule, the schools for girls are not as completely organized or of so high a standard. Included in this bulletin, when possible, are brief independent sketches of the educational conditions in the various countries, so that the readers may receive here in connected form condensed but definite accounts of the following phases of educational work in the country under discussion, in so far as they bear on the preparation of teachers of secondary mathematics: (1) the general educational scheme; (2) secondary schools and their relation to that scheme; (3) the mathematics taught in the secondary schools and the pupils to whom it is taught; (4) the inducements (such as salary, pensions; social position) to young men to take up secondary-school teaching as a profession; (5) the universities of the country, the courses of mathematics and allied subjects they offer, and the diplomas or certificates they confer. The countries profiled include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Roumania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The following are appended: (A) England: Cambridge local examinations, senior students; Oxford and Cambridge schools, examination board; University of London, matriculation examinations; (B) England: Entrance scholarships examination papers, Cambridge University; (C) France: Concours for admission to the Ecole Normale Superieure and for the Courses de licenses in 1913; (D) Agregation des sciences mathematiques; (E) Germany: Reifeprufungen; Lehramtsprufungen; (F) Japan; Examination questions. This bulletin was produced with the editorial cooperation of Smith, D. E.; Osgood, W. F.; and Young, J. W. A. An index is provided. (Individual chapters contain footnotes and tables.)
