Our men are superior to those of other nations, and there is no quality in which the well-bred English horse does not excel, no performance in which he cannot beat all competition. No, it is the system which is at fault. To ascertain and expose the faults of an existing state of things is easier than to substitute a different one, which shall not be liable to greater objections; a trial of the system which I advocate, will, at least, prove interesting, and I hope establish beyond a doubt the great advantages to be derived from it. Excerpt: ...their horses well up to the bit, and putting them together with the use of hand and leg; to see that in all turns, circles, &c, &c, the men bend their horses' heads and necks in the new direction before leaving the boards. Endeavour to make them perfect in their bending and trotting lessons; practise the going "about on the haunches" by frequently halting the rides when at the boards, and giving the word, "On the Haunches About" "March." You then form up and finish with the same bending lessons you began with, namely, "Circling on the forehand," "on the Haunches," "Reining in," and "Applying the Spur." The Horse's Paces. WALK, TROT, AND CANTER. How to Strike off a Horse to both Hands at a Canter--How to change when False or Disunited. The Walk. Monsieur Baucher does not begin the trot till he has perfected the horse at the walk, but I found it answered better in practice to go on with the trotting at the same time; however get a thing well done at a walk before you try it at a trot. Before moving forward, the horse should be light in hand, the head brought home (and not with the nose stuck out), the neck arched, and he should stand evenly on both hind legs. Close the legs and communicate a sufficient impulse to carry him forward, but do not ease the hand at the same time, as laid down in the old system, because if you do, the head and neck may relapse into a position which will defy the control of the hand. The rider should always have a light feeling of both reins, and when the horse bores on the bit, keep the hand steady, use both legs, which, by bringing his haunches under him, will oblige the horse to take his weight off your hand. THE TROT. A horse trots...

Download or read book Nolan s System for Training Cavalry Horses Classic Reprint written by Kenner Garrard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nolan's System for Training Cavalry Horses Since this book was put in the printer's hands, I have been travelling on the Continent. Everywhere, I found that Monsieur Baucher's new Methode had excited much attention, and not a little jealousy amongst the followers of the old system. Books and pamphlets have been published, trying to turn into ridicule the bold intruder, who, in two months, brings his horses to do what years could not accomplish in the old school. In France, Baucher's Methode was subjected to a trial, which, according to the reports of many mem bers of the committee, was eminently successful. The system was rejected notwithstanding; but some of the bending lessons - the most important part of his methods - were retained, and are now made use of in the French cavalry. Book Cavalry Horsemanship and Horse Training

Download or read book Cavalry Horsemanship and Horse Training written by Blacque Belair and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cavalry Horsemanship and Horse Training: Responses Au Questionnaire D'equitation De L'ecole De Cavalerie I cannot too strongly recommend this excellent and comprehensive work of Colonel Blacque Belair's to all students of the Art of Equitation. It has been of the utmost assistance to those who have, during the past year, been entrusted with the task of teaching, though perforce hurriedly, the elements of this complex subject. It has, I think, been conclusively proved, more than ever during the present war, that any time spent on Equitation, whether applied to trooper or troop horse, has not been wasted. As the life-taking mechanical appliances improve in efficiency, so must the Cavalry, by means of their training, increase their power to manoeuvre rapidly, and adopt with the maximum speed and smoothness, formations which are at the same time elastic and comprehensive. The Germans, in March, 1918, found to their cost that without Cavalry their army was not able to reap the fruits of victory. The Allies, by means of theirs, have been able to strike decisive blows in all the many theatres of war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of School Training for Horses I think it fit that I should offer some explanation for advocating the school system of training, since it is generally regarded as something fanciful and useless, if not positively mischievous. I shall first say a few words con cerning the importance of a thorough method in the training of horses for the saddle, and I shall then answer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training and Breaking of Horses While the book is written from a practical point of view, the writer has in mind filling a need met in the classroom, where, owing to lack of time, it is not possible to consider details sufficiently to enable the student to take up the practical work of training horses To facilitate this part of the work, and to avoid repeti tion, free use is made of cross references. Recognizing the incompleteness of such a work, the writer will be glad to correspond with those into whose hands this book may fall concerning difficulties in the training of horses, and also to receive suggestions that will aid in perfecting the horse's education. Book Horse Training by Modern Methods Classic Reprint

Download or read book Horse Training by Modern Methods Classic Reprint written by Alan Melvill Pope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Training by Modern Methods The object of this book is to arrange in the most convenient, clear, and concise form the modern system of horse-training, in so far as it is applicable to the train ing of horses in the mounted service of the United States. No attempt has been made in any case to improve upon methods already deemed correct by the best horse men; and as such methods can be found dealing with all points of training, it follows that the subject matter in this book is not original. Where the best was to be found, there it has been sought, and where the authors of previous works have expressed their ideas in language considered the most concise and clear, their words have been copied verbatim, with due acknowledgement to the authors.
