Book The Tragedy of Central Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Tragedy of Central Europe Classic Reprint written by Ellis Ashmead-Bartlet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedy of Central Europe IT has been my endeavour in this book to describe some of the strange events in Central Europe of which I was an eye-witness during the year of 1919, when the future of millions of men of many races and of many creeds was being decided at the Conference of Paris. The year 19i9 witnessed the collapse and disintegration of the Austro - Hungarian Empire, an event of such far reaching results that no one can foretell what future lies in store for the small dominions and republics which have arisen from amidst the ruins of the Old Dual Empire. The year 1919 saw the desperate struggles between the Royalists and the Bolshevists in Russia, and was rendered memorable by the amazing attempt of Lenin to convert the ancient feudal kingdom of Hungary to the doctrines of Moscow. This strange adventure, by which a small gang of Lenin's agents captured the entire machinery of govern ment in Hungary and exercised despotic sway for a period of five months, was intended as the preliminary step towards a vast campaign to convert all the states of Central Europe to Bolshevism. Book excerpt: The horrific series of conflicts known as the Thirty Years War (1618 - 48) tore the heart out of Europe, killing perhaps a quarter of all Germans and laying waste to whole areas of Central Europe to such a degree that many towns and regions never recovered. All the major European powers apart from England were heavily involved and, while each country started out with rational war aims, the fighting rapidly spiralled out of control, with great battles giving way to marauding bands of starving soldiers spreading plague and murder. The war was both a religious and a political one and it was this tangle of motives that made it impossible to stop. Whether motivated by idealism or cynicism, everyone drawn into the conflict was destroyed by it. At its end a recognizably modern Europe had been created but at a terrible price. Peter Wilson's book is a major work, the first new history of the war in a generation, and a fascinating, brilliantly written attempt to explain a compelling series of events. Wilson's great strength is in allowing the reader to understand the tragedy of mixed motives that allowed rulers to gamble their countries' future with such horrifying results. The principal actors in the drama (Wallenstein, Ferdinand II, Gustavus Adolphus, Richelieu) are all here, but so is the experience of the ordinary soldiers and civilians, desperately trying to stay alive under impossible circumstances. The extraordinary narrative of the war haunted Europe's leaders into the twentieth century (comparisons with 1939 - 45 were entirely appropriate) and modern Europe cannot be understood without reference to this dreadful conflict.

Book Thunder Over Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thunder Over Europe Classic Reprint written by Edward Alexander Powell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thunder Over Europe In writing a book of this description much informa tion not readily available to the public is required. To obtain it the author frequently must request from the governments concerned certain privileges and facilities for observation and investigation. Yet, by the acceptance of such privileges, and the social courtesies which usually accompany them, the author places himself under an implied obligation. Thus, if he criticizes the policy of a government which has aided him, or expresses opinions which are unpalatable to it, he is accused of ingratitude and bad taste. If, on the other hand, he seeks to retain the good-will of a government by ignoring or white washing unpleasant facts, he breaks faith with those who buy his books. The question arises then: should he de ceive his readers by refraining from criticism; or should he state the facts bluntly, as he sees them, regardless of whose toes he treads on? It has always seemed to me that an author's paramount obligation is to his readers. They buy his books on the assumption that he will tell them the unvarnished truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the ages, small nations struggled valiantly against a series of imperial powers - Ottoman Turkey, Habsburg Austria, imperial Germany, czarist Russia, Nazi Germany, and the Soviet Union - and they lost regularly. Johnson's account is present-minded in the best sense: in describing actual historical events, he illustrates the ways they have been remembered, and how they contribute to the national assumptions that still drive European politics today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedy of Albertus Wallenstein The biography of this author is unknown and his productions almost forgotten. He wrote in the reign of Charles I., and is mentioned by Winstanley as "one of the chiefest dramatic poets of that age." His plays were certainly received with approbation in his own time, and deservedly so; but their merit is rather of a poetical, than a dramatic kind. They are not only ill calculated for representation, from the declamatory and undramatic nature of the dialogue, but are deficient in intensity and passion. The author only sports on the surface of the heart; he never penetrates into the sanctuary. Indeed, he is so intent on producing poetry, that he seldom even attempts to excite our sympathies: but, in taking this course, he probably consulted his own powers, and so far acted wisely. For pathos, therefore, he has substituted a highly ornamented style of poetry, and the earnestness of the author for the passion of the interlocutors. Amidst a great deal of redundant imagery, however, we frequently meet with passages of exceeding beauty, particularly in Albertus Wallenstein and The Lady's Privilege.
