Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Towneley Mysteries In the language as well as the style of these Mysteries, a diversity may be perceived, arising in part, perhaps, from the greater elevation of the characters or the subjects in one than in another; and in part also, perhaps, from their not having proceeded from one hand, and from the col lection having been made up partly of compositions strictly original, and partly of compositions obtained from other similar collections.2 In some of them, however. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Towneley Plays: Re-Edited From the Unique Ms. In the absence of precise information, we may assume that the supposition of its having formerly belonged to 'the Abbey of W id kirk' was the Towneley tradition respecting it; and previously to any investigation it may be assumed, that if we are to trace the possession of such a volume as this in-a period; before the Reforma tion, next perhaps to the archives of some guild or other corporation in one of the cities or towns of England, we may expect to find it in the possession of some Conventual society. The question of that early possession is, in fact, the question of the composition of these Mysteries, as to the place and people. We shall now endeavour to determine it. Book A Collection of English Miracle Plays Or Mysteries

Download or read book A Collection of English Miracle Plays Or Mysteries written by William Marriott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of English Miracle-Plays, or Mysteries: Containing Ten Dramas From the Chester, Coventry, and Towneley Series, With Two of Latter Date Stage, is much to be regretted, although it cannot surprise us, if we weigh the assertion of Malone, that a minute investigation of the origin and progress of the, drama in England, will scarcely repay the labour of inquiry. Other writers appear to have held the same opinion, and not to have re ected, that the early Miracle-plays alford one of the best illustrations of the manners and customs of our fore fathers. Moreover we learn from them the opinions of our ancestors on various subjects, their manner of thinking, and are perhaps better enabled to judge of the state of civilisation in which they were, than from other sources. Such must be the light in which unprejudiced minds will regard the ancient English theatre, whatever they may think of the later and present state of the drama. It must, however, be observed, that the following pages contain, with few exceptions only facts and not remarks on these plays, as this volume is intended to be used as a lecture book. In conclusion, the Editor must remark that, although he is fully aware of the imperfections of his attempt to give a concise view of the history of English Miracle-plays yet he believes he has not omitted any notice of importance recorded by any writer on the theatre, or that is to be found in any work that was likely to illustrate the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Supplement to Dodsley's Old Plays, Vol. 2 of 4: Coventry Mysteries, Marriage of Wit and Wisdom, Moral Play of Wit and Science Three complete collections of ancient English mys' teries have descended to modern times, or rather are now known to be preserved, which are generally distinguished by the titles of the Chester, the Townley, and the Coventry Mysteries; and, with the exception of a few detached pieces of far inferior importance, we derive nearly all our actual knowledge of the early English drama from these series of plays, which have been long known to every one interested in this class of literary pursuits, as some of the most curious and valuable relics of bygone times; not merely as important records of our early stage, but also as illustrating, in a very interesting manner, the customs, language, and manners of the periods to which they be long. The only one of these series (which is, perhaps, the most important of all), that has yet been printed, is the Townley, Which was published by the Surtees So ciety, with a very interesting and learned preface by Mr. Hunter. The Coventry is contained in the follow ing volume; and the Chester, so ably commented upon by Mr. Markland, a gentleman to whom belongs the dis tinction of being the first in recent times to direct pnblieattention to these researches, has already been under the consideration of the Council of the Society under Whose auspices the present volume is produced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Language Review, 1919, Vol. 14: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Study of Medieval and Modern Literature and Philology English drama, arising directly out of the services of the Church, was in the first stages of its development a poetic growth, and therefore demanded and secured a poetic expression. But even in the mystery plays, an unrest as to the correct dramatic medium is apparent; a variety Of metres is used, with some slight attempt at order in their distribu tion. Comic characters Often do not use the same kind of metre as the other characters, e.g. Mak in the Towneley Shepherds' Play. John Bale in his Mysteries distingui'shes between the speeches of good and of evil comic) characters by a corresponding change in the length of the lines. In the moralities, the need for such a distinction becomes even more marked; consequently there is great irregularity in the metre.
