Book The Total Flood Warning System

Download or read book The Total Flood Warning System written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In most countries, flood warning systems are incomplete and fragmented and, tend to function sub-optimally. The full complexity of the ideal system is not widely recognised, and severe flood events in particular illustrate flaws in system operation which are serious and potentially dangerous when viewed from the perspective of the flood liable community. This paper attempts to sketch the elements of an ideal T︣otal Flood Warning System ̉and offers some suggestions as to how such a system might be constructed. The history and experience underlying it is Australian, but most of the principles adduced are likely to have general problem of warning communities about impending riverine flooding."--Introduction.

Book Flood Warning Forecasting and Emergency Response

Download or read book Flood Warning Forecasting and Emergency Response written by Kevin Sene and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-15 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent flood events in Europe, the USA and elsewhere have shown the devastating impact that flooding can have on people and property. Flood warning and forecasting systems provide a well-established way to help to reduce the effects of flooding by allowing people to be evacuated from areas at risk, and for measures to be taken to reduce damage to property. With sufficient warning, temporary defences (sandbags, flood gates etc) can also be installed, and river control structures operated to mitigate the effects of flooding. Many countries and local authorities now operate some form of flood warning system, and the underlying technology requires knowledge across a range of technical areas, including rainfall and tidal detection systems, river and coastal flood forecasting models, flood warning dissemination systems, and emergency response procedures. This book provides a comprehensive account of the flood forecasting, warning and emergency response process, including techniques for predicting the development of flood events, and for issuing appropriate warnings. Related topics, such as telemetry and information systems, and flood warning economics, are also discussed. For perhaps the first time, this book brings together in a single volume the many strands of this interesting multidisciplinary topic, and will serve as a reference for researchers, policy makers and engineers. The material on meteorological, hydrological and coastal modelling and monitoring may also be of interest to a wider audience.

Book excerpt: This open access book brings together research studies, developments, and application-related flash flood topics on wadi systems in arid regions. The major merit of this comprehensive book is its focus on research and technical papers as well as case study applications in different regions worldwide that cover many topics and answer several scientific questions. The book chapters comprehensively and significantly highlight different scientific research disciplines related to wadi flash floods, including climatology, hydrological models, new monitoring techniques, remote sensing techniques, field investigations, international collaboration projects, risk assessment and mitigation, sedimentation and sediment transport, and groundwater quality and quantity assessment and management. In this book, the contributing authors (engineers, researchers, and professionals) introduce their recent scientific findings to develop suitable, applicable, and innovative tools for forecasting, mitigation, and water management as well as society development under seven main research themes as follows: Part 1. Wadi Flash Flood Challenges and Strategies Part 2. Hydrometeorology and Climate Changes Part 3. Rainfall–Runoff Modeling and Approaches Part 4. Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Part 5. Reservoir Sedimentation and Sediment Yield Part 6. Groundwater Management Part 7. Application and Case Studies The book includes selected high-quality papers from five series of the International Symposium on Flash Floods in Wadi Systems (ISFF) that were held in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020 in Japan, Egypt, Oman, Morocco, and Japan, respectively. These collections of chapters could provide valuable guidance and scientific content not only for academics, researchers, and students but also for decision-makers in the MENA region and worldwide.

  • Author : Alfred Arsenault
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-03-15
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 88 pages

Download or read book Flood Warning Systems written by Alfred Arsenault and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flash floods typically develop in a period of a few hours or less and can arise from heavy rainfall and other causes, such as dam or flood defense breaches, and ice jam breaks. The rapid development, often associated with a high debris content, can present a considerable risk to people and property. This book describes recent developments in techniques for monitoring and forecasting the development of flash floods, and providing flood warnings. This book describes a holistic and integrated method to assess and design effective flood warning systems. Aptly named the 'Total Flood Warning System' (TFWS) approach, it has been used by the author for several communities, particularly in the state of Victoria, Australia. However, although he draws mainly from his Australian TFWS experience for this book, the TFWS approach could be used to effectively warn any flood-prone community throughout the world.

Book Climate Change and Extreme Events

Download or read book Climate Change and Extreme Events written by Ali Fares and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate Change and Extreme Events uses a multidisciplinary approach to discuss the relationship between climate change-related weather extremes and their impact on human lives. Topics discussed are grouped into four major sections: weather parameters, hydrological responses, mitigation and adaptation, and governance and policies, with each addressed with regard to past, present and future perspectives. Sections give an overview of weather parameters and hydrological responses, presenting current knowledge and a future outlook on air and stream temperatures, precipitation, storms and hurricanes, flooding, and ecosystem responses to these extremes. Other sections cover extreme weather events and discuss the role of the state in policymaking. This book provides a valuable interdisciplinary resource to climate scientists and meteorologists, environmental researchers, and social scientists interested in extreme weather. - Provides an integrated interdisciplinary approach to how climate change impacts the hydrological system - Addresses significant knowledge gaps in our understanding of climate change and extreme events - Discusses the societal impacts of climate change-related weather extremes, including multilevel governance and adaptation policy
