Book The Toronto Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Toronto Gospels Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Toronto Gospels The codex consists of 226 leaves, in twenty-nine quires. These are made in the usual Greek manner, with eight leaves in each quire, except the 14th (of six) and 23d (of four), and are numbered in the lower left hand corner of the first recto. The leaves measure cm. 13 by The parchment is not very thin, and the book with its thick board covers makes a stout little volume 8 cmm. In thickness. There is appended to it a group of five quires, four of 7 and one of 6 leaves, or 34 in all, in scribed in a much later hand with the synaxarium and the menology. There are three coarse parchment fly leaves, one at the beginning and two at the end Of the whole, which thus contains 263 parchment leaves. The writing is in single columns, in the gospels of 18 lines. The lines are carefully ruled, the writing depending from the lines. The margins contain the section and canon numbers, and the chapter numbers and titles. There are frequent marginal initials in gold over red. A later hand has added lection numbers and titles and, at the upper right-hand corner of each recto, the name of the evangelist. The manuscript is not dated in the first hand, but a comparison with facsimiles of dated Greek cursives in the Bibliotheque Nationale published by Omont strongly favors a date toward the close of the eleventh century, or early in the twelfth. The hand of the Paris Psalter dated 1070 (bibl. Nat. MS grec 164) closely resembles that of the Toronto manuscript, which must have been written in the same general period. Download or read book The Bernward Gospels written by Jennifer P. Kingsley and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few works of art better illustrate the splendor of eleventh-century painting than the manuscript often referred to as the “precious gospels” of Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim, with its peculiar combination of sophistication and naïveté, its dramatically gesturing figures, and the saturated colors of its densely ornamented surfaces. In The Bernward Gospels, Jennifer Kingsley offers the first interpretive study of the pictorial program of this famed manuscript and considers how the gospel book conditioned contemporary and future viewers to remember the bishop. The codex constructs a complex image of a minister caring for his diocese not only through a life of service but also by means of his exceptional artistic patronage; of a bishop exercising the sacerdotal authority of his office; and of a man fundamentally preoccupied with his own salvation and desire to unite with God through both his sight and touch. Kingsley insightfully demonstrates how this prominent member of the early medieval episcopate presented his role to the saints and to the communities called upon to remember him.

Book Q the Earliest Gospel

    Book Details:
  • Author : John S. Kloppenborg
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2008-10-03
  • ISBN : 161164058X
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Q the Earliest Gospel written by John S. Kloppenborg and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2008-10-03 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimated to date back to the very early Jesus movement, the lost Gospel known as Q offers a distinct and remarkable picture of Jesus and his significance--and one that differs markedly from that offered by its contemporary, the apostle Paul. Q presents Jesus as a prophetic critic of unbelief and a sage with the wisdom that can transform. In Q, the true meaning of the "kingdom of God" is the fulfillment of a just society through the transformation of the human relationships within it. Though this document has never been found, John Kloppenborg offers a succinct account of why scholars maintain it existed in the first place and demonstrates how they have been able to reconstruct its contents and wording from the two later Gospels that used it as a source: Matthew and Luke. Presented here in its entirety, as developed by the International Q Project, this Gospel reveals a very different portrait of Jesus than in much of the later canonical writings, challenging the way we think of Christian origins and the very nature and mission of Jesus Christ.

Book The Gospel of Breaking

Download or read book The Gospel of Breaking written by Jillian Christmas and published by arsenal pulp press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Gospel of Breaking, Jillian Christmas confirms what followers of her performance and artistic curation have long known: there is magic in her words. Befitting someone who “speaks things into being,” Christmas extracts from family history, queer lineage, and the political landscape of a racialized life to create a rich, softly defiant collection of poems. Christmas draws a circle around the things she calls “holy”: the family line that cannot find its root but survived to fill the skies with radiant flesh; the body, broken and unbroken and broken and new again; the lover lost, the friend lost, and the loss itself; and the hands that hold them all with brilliant, tender care. Expansive and beautiful, these poems allow readers to swim in Jillian Christmas’s mother-tongue and to dream at her shores.
