Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Places, or the Topography of the Holy Land: A Succinct Account of All the Places, Rivers, and Mountains of the Land of Israel, Mentioned in the Bible, So Far as They Have Been Identified: Together With Their Modern Names and Historical References When this handbook was first compiled, twenty-five years ago, we possessed no other key to the ancient topography of Palestine than the 'Domesday Book' of Joshua, and the - sometimes inexact - accounts of Josephus. Of modern explorers, we had Robinson, Van de Velde, and Lynch, besides others, whose work was rather descriptive than topographical. The Palestine Exploration Fund had only commenced its survey in that year, and no topographical results had been published. The writer had to rely chiefly on his own personal observation. It is not easy to realize the prodigious advance in our knowledge of this subject in the subsequent quarter of a century. To take the contemporary records alone. Then the Moabite Stone had just been brought to light. To that, after ten years, was added the Siloam inscription, and the Egyptian records of Thothmes III, and Rameses II. Book excerpt: In Bible Places, H. B. Tristram aimed to provide a brief yet very informative description of every Holy Land site mentioned in the Bible. Tristram intended this book for a popular audience, especially "such as have neither time nor opportunity to refer to larger treatises on the geography of Palestine." Relying on the extensive research of the Palestinian Exploration Fund, Tristram's work afforded many a new and vividly descriptive perspective on the Holy Land and a new awareness of the geographical and topographical accuracy of the Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nineteenth century scholars the Holy Land was not just a region of the globe - it was an idea, an intellectual and moral space charged with the heat of debate between those trying to understand the religious, social and scientific upheavals of the time. Edwin Aiken explores the various ways in which geographical knowledge was used in these debates. In particular he shows how religious writers called upon geographical knowledge to the benefit of their readers. The result is an original and stimulating work of scholarship that demonstrates the significance of the geography of the Holy Land in Western thought and argument, and makes important contributions to the history of geography, the nature of Orientalism, and to the evolving relationship between religion and science.
