Book excerpt: Some folk will tell you the FA Premier League is the greatest show on earth. They may even have a point. But to build something so successful, so popular, so inescapable, you've got to have mighty strong foundations. Prior to 1992, the old First Division was England's premier prize. Its rich tapestry winds back to 1888 and the formation of the Football League. A grand century-long tradition in danger of being lost in the wake of Premier League year zero. No more! In The Title Scott Murray tells the lively, cherry-picked story of English football through the prism of the First Division. Rich with humour yet underpinned with solid research, this is a glorious meander across our national sport's varied terrain. With as much about Burnley, Wolves, West Brom and Portsmouth as the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, we learn the less well-known stories the sport has to tell, such as the plight of Glossop, the smallest club to ever play top-flight football, and final day drama involving Huddersfield and Cardiff that knocks Michael Thomas into a cocked hat. We bask in the managerial genius of Tom Watson, the bowler-hatted Victorian Mourinho; celebrate the joy of the Busby Babes; discover the shameless showmanship of George Allison; embark on righteous escapades with Hughie Gallacher; and meet some old favourites in Don Revie, Bill Shankly, Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough. At turns exciting, surprising, witty and bittersweet, The Title is a highly informed, fresh and affectionate love-letter to the English game, and a delight for any football fan.

Book Danger Forward The Story of the First Division in World War II

Download or read book Danger Forward The Story of the First Division in World War II written by Col. S. B. Mason and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No mission too difficult, no sacrifice too great, duty first.—The motto of the First Division. The heroic, hard-fought history of the “Big Red One” is recorded by the men who fought in the campaigns across North Africa and Europe. A regular army unit, the First Infantry Division was one of the first combat formations to move overseas in WWII. Overseas: 7 August 1942. Campaigns: Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Alsace, Central Europe. Days of Combat: 443. The 1st Infantry Division saw its first combat in World War II in North Africa, landing at Oran and taking part in the initial fighting, 8-10 November 1942. Elements then took part in see-saw combat at Maktar, Medjez el Bab, Kasserine Pass, Gafsa, El Guettar, Beja, and Mateur, 21 January-9 May 1943, helping secure Tunisia. The First was the first ashore in the invasion of Sicily, 10 July 1943; it fought a series of short, fierce battles on the island's tortuous terrain. When that campaign was over, the Division returned to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. The First Division assaulted Omaha Beach on D-day, 6 June 1944, some units suffering 30 percent casualties in the first hour, and secured Formigny and Caumont in the beachhead. The Division followed up the St. Lô breakthrough with an attack on Marigny, 27 July 1944, and then drove across France in a continuous offensive, reaching the German border at Aachen in September. The Division laid siege to Aachen, taking the city after a direct assault, 21 October 1944. The First then attacked east of Aachen through Hürtgen Forest, driving to the Roer, and moved to a rest area 7 December for its first real rest in 6 months' combat, when the von Rundstedt offensive suddenly broke loose, 16 December. The Division raced to the Ardennes, and fighting continuously from 17 December 1944 to 28 January 1945, helped blunt and turn back the German offensive. Thereupon, the Division attacked and again breached the Siegfried Line, fought across the Roer, 23 February 1945, and drove on to the Rhine, crossing at the Remagen bridgehead, 15-16 March 1945. The Division broke out of the bridgehead, took part in the encirclement of the Ruhr Pocket, captured Paderborn, pushed through the Harz Mountains, and was in Czechoslovakia, at Kinsperk, Sangerberg, and Mnichov, when the war in Europe ended. Richly illustrated with 115 photos and 19 maps.

Book George Best A Celebration Untold True Stories of Our Most Legendary Footballer

This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Best was one of the greatest footballers ever to have walked the Earth - an absolute legend. His ability as an all-round player was, and still is, unsurpassed. He was highly skilful, a tough tackler and great in the air. As well as being an exceptionally gifted sportsman, George also had a unique gift when it came to people. His open and friendly nature meant that others were naturally drawn to him and he always had time to get to know anyone and everyone.Perhaps because of this, George Best reached so many people. As well as the legions of football fans who watched, awestruck, as he played, he also touched the hearts of everyone with whom he came in contact on a day-to-day basis; from club managers to the groundsmen at Old Trafford, Bestie had time for them all; it seems that almost everyone has a story to tell about him!Bernie Smith is an avid collector of everything to do with the late, great man and Maureen Hunt worked in the newspaper industry for over twenty years. From banknotes to team photographs, to signed shirts and even underwear, there is not much out there relating to George that they don't know about or possess! While gathering memorabilia they discovered that almost every keepsake, souvenir or trophy has a humorous, heart-warming or poignant story attached to it. Piecing together these gems of history, they have complied a fitting tribute to a genuine icon.Take, for example, the incredible journey of the pair of limited edition 'George Best' boots that ended up on a stall at Brick Lane market in London to eventually become the treasured possession of a man who idolised him; or the boy whose house backed onto the United training ground and who would jump over the fence to stand at the back of the nets to watch the Best magic and act as a ball boy when necessary; or even a gold thong, signed by George himself, that was bought at auction and left in a drawer...until now!Packed with anecdotes and rare photographs, this delightful book will be a welcome addition to any Best fan's collection and is a wonderful way to commemorate the man who was who both hero and friend to so many people.'The genius of George Best on the football field is well documented, as is the celebrity lifestyle which such genius often attracts. This book gives an insight into the much less well known human side of his life and the many unsung acts of kindness which were so typical and which endeared him to everyone who was fortunate enough to know or meet him. I count myself privileged to be amongst that number' - Doug Ellis, President Emeritus - Aston Villa Football Club'George Best was a fine fellow to share company with off the football field. It doesn't surprise me that the stories in this book celebrate the real side of George. George had a snooker table in his house and he loved to play the game. He was one of the nicest people you would ever wish to meet, with a great sense of humour' - Dennis Taylor, 1985 Embassy World Snooker Champion and fellow Belfast boy'Besite can only be described in one word - fantastic! - Ron 'Chopper' Harris

Book excerpt: *WINNER OF THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR* Fever Pitch is Nick Hornby's million-copy-selling, award-winnning football classic 'A spanking 7-0 away win of a football book. . . inventive, honest, funny, heroic, charming' Independent For many people watching football is mere entertainment, to some it's more like a ritual; but to others, its highs and lows provide a narrative to life itself. But, for Nick Hornby, his devotion to the game has provided one of few constants in a life where the meaningful things - like growing up, leaving home and forming relationships, both parental and romantic - have rarely been as simple or as uncomplicated as his love for Arsenal. Brimming with wit and honesty, Fever Pitch, catches perfectly what it really means to be a football fan - and in doing so, what it means to be a man. 'Hornby has put his finger on truths that have been unspoken for generations' Irish Times 'Funny, wise and true' Roddy Doyle
