Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tin Mines and the Mining Industries of Perak and Other Papers The duration of the Bronze Period is necessarily unknown, but it is conceded that it must have extended over a very considerable number of centuries. During it, man rose from a state of almost complete savagery to a comparatively high pitch of civilization. Writing was invented, and great advances made in many of the arts and manufactures; nearly all the animals we now keep were domesticated, and the cereals in cultivation, before the commencement of the Age of Iron. During this time, judging from the abundance of bronze objects of all kinds that have been found, large quantities of tin must have been used. It is considered that the sources from which it was derived were Spain, Britain and Malaya. In the early Iron Period the great navigators of the world were the Phoenicians, and it was they who took tin from England and Spain and the Islands of India to the centres of civilization. There was, however, some other race of navigators who preceded the Phoenicians and exceeded them in the extent of their commercial voyages. Who these people were is uncertain, but the recent investigations into the antiquities of America make it certain that they crossed the Atlantic Ocean and carried on intercourse between the Old World and the New. A few of the discoveries that have been made may be mentioned here, to Show the connection that exists between the old inhabitants of America and those of Europe and Asia. The stone and bronze implements are absolutely identical; the round towers, pyramids and coins are very similar; in both hemispheres embalming the dead, artificially deforming skulls, and the rite of circumcision were practised; and the most con vincing of all is, perhaps, that carved representations of elephants have been found in Central America, and veritable tobacco pipes, associated with prehistoric remains of a period very many centuries before Columbus re introduced the use of tobacco into Europ-, e have been found in Ireland. It is perhaps not improbable that these people, whose existence is recognised by both philologists and antiquarians, may have traded, like their successors the Phoenicians, with the lands of the East, as it is certain they did with those of the West. Book The Tin Mining Industry and the Distribution of Tin Ores in New South Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Tin Mining Industry and the Distribution of Tin Ores in New South Wales Classic Reprint written by Joseph Edmund Carne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tin-Mining Industry and the Distribution of Tin Ores in New South Wales IN dealing with the Tin Industry of the State and the distribution of tin ores, the purely economic aspect is made paramount, such, in fact, being the raison d'etre of the Mineral Resources Series. Theoretical, and even strati graphical geology, whilst not neglected, are subordinated to the more imme diate requirements of prospecting and mining. Economic works have a tendency of late to develop into treatises on all phases of the subject, and hence become over-weighted with extraneous matter properly belonging to special sections, to say nothing of the purely scientific, and frequently debatable, speculations as to genesis, which cloak the common, but more vital, issues connected with mining development. Tin, however, unlike copper* - which formed the subject of the previous issue by the Writer - being relatively restricted in its geographical and petro logical range, allows scope for consideration of more essentially scientific features, without unduly increasing the bulk of the work or obscuring its main object. The principal centres of tin-mining have been geologically surveyed, and may be studied in the accompanying maps; those of lesser importance, and occurrences of no economic value, are shown on a general locality map. On the geological maps the boundaries of the principal granite types are laid down; but mapping of the innumerable aplitic dykes and bosses, and their greisen and felsitic bands, has not been attempted, as the work would have been unduly delayed. Tin ore occurs in the extreme Northern, Southern, and Western divisions of the State, but, so far, in the first only has it been found in workable quantities, and more especially on the western fall of the Northern or New England tableland Emmaville, on Vegetable Creek, and Tingha, on Cope's Creek, being the chief centres of the tin-mining industry. The present drainage channels in these districts were found to be extremely rich in naturally concentrated tin gravels later, the banks and higher terrace levels were worked; and later still, the earlier drainage systems, buried beneath basalt flows, received attention, some being traced from shallow ground to gradually increasing depths beneath adjacent basalt sheets 3 others were attacked vertically through the volcanic rock, which was rightly regarded, in many instances, as the filling of ancient valleys. Book Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium

Download or read book Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium written by A.K. Suri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and development witnessed today in modern science, engineering, and technology owes a heavy debt to the rare, refractory, and reactive metals group, of which niobium is a member. Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium presents a vivid account of the metal through its comprehensive discussions of properties and applications, resources and resource processing, chemical processing and compound preparation, metal extraction, and refining and consolidation. Typical flow sheets adopted in some leading niobium-producing countries for the beneficiation of various niobium sources are presented, and various chemical processes for producing pure forms of niobium intermediates such as chloride, fluoride, and oxide are discussed. The book also explains how to liberate the metal from its intermediates and describes the physico-chemical principles involved. It is an excellent reference for chemical metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, extraction and process metallurgists, and minerals processors. It is also valuable to a wide variety of scientists, engineers, technologists, and students interested in the topic.

Book World Development Report 2009

Download or read book World Development Report 2009 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-11-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising densities of human settlements, migration and transport to reduce distances to market, and specialization and trade facilitated by fewer international divisions are central to economic development. The transformations along these three dimensions density, distance, and division are most noticeable in North America, Western Europe, and Japan, but countries in Asia and Eastern Europe are changing in ways similar in scope and speed. 'World Development Report 2009: Reshaping Economic Geography' concludes that these spatial transformations are essential, and should be encouraged. The conclusion is not without controversy. Slum-dwellers now number a billion, but the rush to cities continues. Globalization is believed to benefit many, but not the billion people living in lagging areas of developing nations. High poverty and mortality persist among the world's 'bottom billion', while others grow wealthier and live longer lives. Concern for these three billion often comes with the prescription that growth must be made spatially balanced. The WDR has a different message: economic growth is seldom balanced, and efforts to spread it out prematurely will jeopardize progress. The Report: documents how production becomes more concentrated spatially as economies grow. proposes economic integration as the principle for promoting successful spatial transformations. revisits the debates on urbanization, territorial development, and regional integration and shows how today's developers can reshape economic geography.
