Book excerpt: The time traveler is Lieserl Einstein (who now refers to herself as Lisa.) Born in 1902, there is no record of her existence. The only mention of her birth came when Albert Einstein's personal papers were released to the public in the 1980s. Lisa was exceptionally brilliant, well beyond her father in theoretical and mechanical ability. She went back in time to remove all records of her existence, leaving the mention ofher birth in the private papers as a teaser. The Great Fire of Chicago had nothing to do with a cow, but everything to do with a passing comet that sprayed the upper Great Lakes with debris and caused massive firestorms. A small rock was part of that debris. It contained an incredible amount of stored energy, but was the size of a pea and weighed next to nothing. Lisa purchased this pebble, harnessed its energy, and developed a GCSL device (Galactic Cosmic String Locator) to manipulate the pebble to allow her to locate cosmic string tendrils and ride them to other time periods. This book is Lisa's journal and a synopsis of her travels through time.

  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press

Download or read book Time Travel written by David Wittenberg and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “stimulating contribution to literary theory” reveals the deeply philosophical concerns and developments behind popular time travel sci-fi (London Review of Books). In Time Travel, literary theorist David Wittenberg argues that time travel fiction is not mere escapism, but a narrative “laboratory” where theoretical questions about storytelling—and, by extension, about the philosophy of temporality, history, and subjectivity—are presented in story form. Drawing on physics, philosophy, narrative theory, psychoanalysis, and film theory, Wittenberg links innovations in time travel fiction to specific shifts in the popularization of science, from nineteenth-century evolutionary biology to twentieth-century quantum physics and more recent “multiverse” cosmologies. Wittenberg shows how popular awareness of new science led to surprising innovations in the literary “time machine,” which evolved from a vehicle used for sociopolitical commentary into a psychological device capable of exploring the temporal structure and significance of subjects, viewpoints, and historical events. Time Travel draws on classic works of science fiction by H. G. Wells, Edward Bellamy, Robert Heinlein, Samuel Delany, and Harlan Ellison, television shows such as “The Twilight Zone” and “Star Trek,” and other popular entertainments. These are read alongside theoretical work ranging from Einstein, Schrödinger, Stephen Hawking to Gérard Genette, David Lewis, and Gilles Deleuze. Wittenberg argues that even the most mainstream audiences of popular time travel fiction and cinema are vigorously engaged with many of the same questions about temporality, identity, and history that concern literary theorists, media and film scholars, and philosophers.

Book excerpt: Her Future Destiny is Hidden in the Ancient Past. Sahara Aldridge, a young Egyptologist in 1922, is making a name for herself on the digsite soon to become Egypt's most sensational discovery-the tomb of the boy-king, Tutankhamun. Despite opposition from a mostly-male profession, Sahara fights to continue the legacy of her Egyptologist parents, who died tragically at sea when she was a teen. But then a childhood friend finds a lost journal written by Sahara's mother, hinting at the bizarre possibility of time-travel, and a crazy suspicion forces Sahara to confront a freak incident years earlier... Is it possible her parents were time travelers? And has she inherited this mind-blowing ability? When the American journalist Jack Moretti begins asking too many questions, Sahara suspects he knows more than he's telling. Did her parents truly perish in an accident? Or did someone target and murder them because of their time traveling gift? There's only one way to unearth the truth. Sahara must travel back in time, to the days of King Tut. But the biggest surprise is yet to come... the truth about her parents, and about her own destiny, discovered in the whispers of conspiracy around the death of Egypt's most famous Pharaoh. But what secrets are better left buried?
