Book The Timber Industries of Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Industries of Maryland Classic Reprint written by James T. Bones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Industries of Maryland Forest industries used over 42 million cubic feet of timber from the forests of Maryland in 1975. Almost 58 percent of this volume was from hardwood trees. Sawlogs were the major timber product, accounting for slightly more than 55 percent of the total harvest in Maryland. Pulpwood production ranked second in volume, accounting for 33 percent of the total. Other timber products that made up a minor portion of the harvest were veneer and cooperage logs, piling, poles, posts, mine timbers, and handle stock. Overall, the timber harvest in Maryland has decreased 25 percent since the last industry sur vey was made in 1963, and 19 percent since 1952. Even though the production of most products declined between 1963 and 1975, two products showed substantial increases: the harvest of veneer logs and pulpwood increased 42 and 27 percent respectively. These production gains were due entirely to an increase in the use of softwoods for pulpwood and veneer. The softwood harvest for pulpwood increased from million cubic feet in 1963 to million cubic feet in 1975 and the softwood veneer-log harvest increased from cubic feet to million cubic feet. The veneer log production was stimulated by the establishment of a softwood plywood plant on Maryland's eastern shore in 1967. This plywood plant is the only one using. Softwoods in the Northeast. In 1975, most of the industrial timber harvest came from eastern Maryland (fig. The 17 million cubic-foot harvest from the South Eastern Shore Unit represented 39 percent of the state total. Although the North Central Unit ranked second in volume harvested - 11 million cubic feet - a greater volume of sawlogs was harvested from this unit than from any of the other units. The Western Unit had the largest pulpwood harvest from hardwoods; the million cubic feet of pulpwood production was 89 percent of the hardwood total for Maryland. Charles County, in the Southern Unit, was the state's largest hardwood sawlog producer in 1975 million board feet); Worcester County produced the largest volume of softwood saw logs million board feet). Book The Timber Industries of West Virginia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Industries of West Virginia Classic Reprint written by James T. Bones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Industries of West Virginia Hansen and Warder (1967) observed that a pattern toward greater stability had developed within the industry. This was exemplified by a steady decline in small-scale operations, an ih crease in average size, a leveling-off in total out put, and an increasing number of mills that operated all year. The study also found that the percentage of sawmills near improved roads had grown from 68 percent in 1958 to 81 percent in 1967, and that maximum distances for hauling sawlogs (from the woods to the mill) had in creased from a range of 10 to 36 miles to a range of 18 to 110 miles. In the eastern United States, improved transportation routes tend to increase the size of raw-material procurement areas, in crease product marketing capabilities, and en courage the development of high-capacity production facilities. While sawlog production from West Virginia timberlands decreased by 5 percent - 464 million board feet - from 1965 to 1974, log receipts at sawmills decreased by 8 percent (table Only the Northwestern Region reflected increases in both sawlog production and receipts, up 26 percent and 17 percent, respectively, during the past 10 years. The Southern Region experienced the greatest losses in both production and receipts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Pennsylvania Timber Industries

Download or read book Pennsylvania Timber Industries written by James T. Bones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania Timber Industries: A Periodic Assessment of Timber Output Pennsylvania timberlands support a variety of valuable hardwood species such as black cherry, white ash, red and white oaks, and hard maple. In the past it was the practice to harvest high-value individual trees of these species and leave trees of less desirable spe cies and those with poor form and low value. This type of harvesting has become very ex pensive, and typically leaves large numbers of residual trees and logging debris per unit of volume recovered. Immediately after harvest ing, these residual stands have no further economically feasible use, and they are visually and environmentally unacceptable. A primary goal for industry should be to provide for the complete and highest use of the State's timber resources. This means that more wood fiber should be recovered and channeled to the wood-using industry best suited to convert each class of roundwood from each forested acre. Such newly developed equipment as rubber-tired skidders and total tree systems are well suited for harvesting hardwood timber stands, but this equipment represents a substantial investment. Book A Study of the Massachusetts Wood Using Industries Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study of the Massachusetts Wood Using Industries Classic Reprint written by Hugh Maxwell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Massachusetts Wood-Using Industries The Bureau of the Census, in co-operation with the United States Forest Service, compiles and publishes statistics annually, showing the output of sawmills by States and for the whole country. The cut in Massachusetts in 1908 was 384,526,000 feet B. M., reported by 610 sawmills. This did not include pulpwood, tanbark, tanning extracts, cross-ties, telegraph and telephone poles, or cooperage and veneer stocks. After lumber leaves the sawmill it serves many purposes. Some of it passes through no further process of manufacture, but goes into buildings with only the cutting and fitting which carpenters give it. Another part is further manufactured before it is used. Woodworking machines of many kinds change its form, and it is cut, joined and fitted by skilled labor, becoming, partly or wholly, a finished product, - boxes, frames, doors, sash, vehicles, boats, shuttles, spools, lasts, baskets, musical instruments, furniture, handles, toys, brushes and many more. This study has to do with that part of lumber only which undergoes further process of manufacture after it leaves the sawmill. Heretofore, lumber has not been very carefully followed after it leaves the saw, to ascertain what becomes of it, what is made of it, and into what commodities it enters. In a general way it has been known that some of it is used in its rough form, and some passes through further process of manufacture. The present study of the wood-manufacturing industries of Massachusetts was undertaken to supply information concerning the lumber which is not used in its rough form. The work has been done in co-operation by the United States Forest Service and the State of Massachusetts. Industries which manufacture commodities wholly or partly of wood were asked to furnish data along their special lines, and this report is based on their replies, supplemented by independent investigations throughout the State. Statistics thus collected and published are expected to be useful to both growers and manufacturers of wood.
