Book excerpt: Where once was a beautiful wood now stands a desolate field smothered in ash and garbage, and here a young man named Waller has terrorizing encounters with grotesque figures named "the garbagemen." As Waller becomes fascinated with these desperate men who eke out a survival by rooting through their nation's waste, he imagines they are also digging through its past as their government erases its history and walls itself off from the outside world. One of celebrated East German author Wolfgang Hilbig's most accessible and resonant works,The Tidings of the Trees is about the politics that rip us apart, the stories we tell for survival, and the absolute importance of words to nations and people. Featuring some of Hilbig's most striking, poetic, and powerful images, this flawless novella perfectly balances politics and literature.

Book excerpt: How was the universe created, and why? What is the role of man on Earth, and that of intelligent beings on other planets, in it? What is life like on some other planets? Why is man here, what is expected of him? These are some of the questions that this book answers. The translator considers the materials in this book as religion and philosophy of life for people who are searching for the full truth and are willing to think for themselves and to question commonly accepted beliefs. It tells how man should live so that it would be good for everyone, and so that Christ's statement about "Paradise on Earth" would indeed come true. The part dealing with religion can be divided into two broad categories. The first one explains, clarifies, and in a few cases supplements the concepts which the Prophets of the past, such as Buddha, Christ, Indra, Mohammed, Moses, Zoroaster, and others proclaimed. The second part tells what the Prophets of the past could not tell back then, because the humanity of that time would not have understood them. Now that humanity's science is much further advanced. The Almighty has decided o reveal the complete truth about the universe. Here the latest scientific knowledge is brought in, and hints are given beyond the current knowledge of science. This book tells about and explains The Almighty's religion of the universe. This in turn entails the reason for the creation of the universe, how the universe is being created and governed, and, yes, the very significant role which man of Earth is expected to play in this process. Examples are given from intelligent life on other planets and much is said about how man should live and what he should not do. There are stories that help to illustrate the points. The Almighty's religion differs dramatically from all other religions currently practiced on Earth. It recognizes and acknowledges all other religions, it does not require an individual to join it. It does not threaten or condemn the "nonbelievers," it permits, it insists in each individual choosing freely for himself or herself. It merely provides some truly thought provoking materials to ponder.

The spirits explain the very workings of the universe, including planet Earth, as well as the development of matter and the spiritual nature of mankind. One of the women communicating with spirits is Mary, the mother of translator Nick Mezins. She invites others to join her group, and its members consider why the universe was created, what is the role of man on Earth, whether there is life on other planets, and other essential issues. Discover the answers to these questions in the second volume to The Tidings. Mezins has painstakingly translated the many conversations and insights his mother and others gleaned from the spirits so that everyone can benefit. These further extracts focus on a variety of themes, including religion and prophets such as Jesus Christ, the Buddha, Moses, and Zoroaster. Book excerpt: One of Germany's literary giants, Ernst Emil Wiechert (1887-1950) was thrown into Buchenwald concentration camp for publicly backing anti-Nazi pastor Martin Niemöller. His final novel, published posthumously, deals with the aftermath of the Holocaust - how the survivors, both victims and perpetrators, seek healing and redemption as they pick up the shattered pieces of their world. Evoking comparisons to the Russian greats Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy, Wiechert displays an uncommon depth of insight into the human condition at its most degenerate and it ennobling best - an understanding born of his own suffering and quest for rebirth. His novel is peopled with rich and complex characters and charged with both violent feelings and spiritual hunger. First published in 1950 as Missa Sine Nomine (Mass Without a Name), Tidings deserves its place among the masterpieces of European literature.
