Download or read book The English Morality Play written by Robert A Potter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1975, The English Morality Play is the extended history of the English morality play, its persistence and flourishing as a dramatic tradition. The book sheds light on the intellectual and social origins of the morality play, its relationship to the medieval Corpus Christi cycle plays, its subject, purpose, conditions of original staging, and the abstract characters of its dramatis personae. The changing tradition is revealed within Renaissance drama, in the works of Skelton and Medwall, and the Reformation plays of Lindsay, Bale and Udall, as the morality play altered under the pressure of political events, escaped from the general suppression of religious drama, and in complex ways came to influence the dramatic conceptions of Marlowe, Shakespeare and Ben Jonson. Contemporary parallels to the English morality tradition in European drama are investigated, as is the rediscovery of the texts of the plays by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century critics. In the final chapter, Dr. Potter examines the revival of the morality tradition on the twentieth-century stage and its influence on such dramatists as Bernard Shaw, T. S. Eliot, W. B. Yeats and Bertolt Brecht. This book will be of interest to students of literature and drama.

Download or read book Brawl Ridiculous written by Charles Edelman and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paying close attention to the performance conditions in the Elizabethan theatre, Edelman (English, Edith Cowan U., Western Australia) explores how Shakespeare's many battle scenes, duels, and single combats would have been presented by his own company. He draws on the whole range of plays to argue that such scenes reinforce poetic and dramatic themes, rather than merely provide a popular spectacle for the crowd. Book The Subject of Tragedy Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Subject of Tragedy Routledge Revivals written by Catherine Belsey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, The Subject of Tragedy takes the drama of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as the starting point for an analysis of the differential identities of man and woman. Catherine Belsey charts, in a range of fictional and non-fictional texts, the production in the Renaissance of a meaning for subjectivity that is identifiably modern. The subject of liberal humanism – self-determining, free origin of language, choice and action – is highlighted as the product of a specific period in which man was the subject to which woman was related.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This modern-spelling critical edition of a famous and controversial theatrical document from the Elizabethan age shows that Sir Thomas More is the best extant example of the genre of biographical history. Following a radical re-examination of the manuscript, this edition relates step by step to the process by which the play acquired its final form, accounting in the collation and in the rejected or alternative passages at the end of the text for each single word or mark found in the manuscript. Particular attention is devoted to the use of sources not previously identified, most of which are reproduced in the appendices.
