Book Thyroid Eye Disease Understanding Graves Ophthalmopathy

Download or read book Thyroid Eye Disease Understanding Graves Ophthalmopathy written by Edgar Harrison and published by Foster Academics. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graves' disease refers to a disorder affecting the immune system which leads to the overproduction of thyroid hormones. Graves' ophthalmopathy, also called Graves' orbitopathy, is an autoimmune disease affecting the retro-ocular tissues in patients having Graves' disease. It is primarily the disease of the orbit and can have severe implications, such as loss of sight. It causes swelling in the area around the eyes, which causes bulging of the eyes. The symptoms of Graves' ophthalmopathy include double vision, bulging eyes, swelling in the eyelids, vision loss, sensitivity to light, redness or inflammation, and difficulty in moving eyes. This disease results in increased extraocular muscle volume and orbital fat in the orbital space. The targets of autoimmune attack within Graves' ophthalmopathy are the fibroblasts residing in the orbital tissues. Radiation, immunosuppression and surgical procedures, like orbital decompression surgery, eye muscle surgery and eyelid surgery are utilized to treat severe forms of this disease. This book contains some path-breaking studies on Graves' Ophthalmopathy. It is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex advancements in the study of this disease. The book will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.

Book Highlights From Thyroid Eye Disease Forum Drilling Down and Digging Deeper to Ensure Early Diagnosis and Treatment

Download or read book Highlights From Thyroid Eye Disease Forum Drilling Down and Digging Deeper to Ensure Early Diagnosis and Treatment written by Andrea Kossler and published by Vindico Medical Education. This book was released on with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune disorder believed to result from the stimulation of several receptors located in the orbital fibroblasts. It is frequently misdiagnosed, due to both its heterogeneous clinical presentation and a failure on the part of clinicians to understand the relationship between TED and hyperthyroidism. Misdiagnosis can place patients at risk, as management of TED is most effective during the initial, active phase of the disease. However, differential diagnosis can be achieved with the assistance of imaging, and early treatment may limit disfigurement and reduce vision loss. Healthcare professionals should be knowledgeable about the presentation of these patients, which includes patients with dry eye disease, as well as conventional and new treatment options available for patients with TED. In this monograph, expert faculty drill down deeper into the diagnosis of and treatments for TED, including teprotumumab—the first and only medical agent approved by the US FDA for the treatment of TED.

Book Graves Disease

    Book Details:
  • Author : Basil Rapoport

Download or read book Graves Disease written by Basil Rapoport and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the perspective of the investigator, Graves' disease is a fascinating disorder with unique features and opportunities for study. The discovery in 1956 that Graves' disease was caused by a humoral factor, later shown to be an antibody to the TSH receptor, was a triumph for modern investigative medicine. Rapid progress is now being made in (i) understanding the molecular interaction between autoantibodies and the TSH receptor, (ii) identifying the genes that contribute to the predisposition to disease, (iii) developing an animal model of Graves' disease, and (iv) identifying the long-sought orbital antigen in ophthalmopathy. From the clinical standpoint, although Graves' disease is eminently treatable, there is no definitive cure. None of the therapeutic options are ideal. It is hoped that rapid progress in understanding the pathogenesis of the disease will lead to the ultimate goal of some form of immunotherapy that will make antithyroid drugs, radioiodine and thyroidectomy obsolete. The chapters in Graves' Disease: Pathogenesis and Treatment represent the viewpoints of many prominent clinicians and investigators working in the field. The editors are grateful for their contributions which cover an unusually comprehensive compendium of subjects relating to the disease.
