Download or read book On the Threshold of Adolescence written by Hermann Koepke and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 1992 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how Suzanne, a young Waldorf teacher, struggles with the changes her class is going through. The problems she and parents must deal with are familiar to all parents--drug use, smoking, lack of responsiveness, rebelliousness, and moodiness. In this compassionate and wise guidebook, we accompany Suzanne in her sincere efforts to help her students as she talks to other faculty menmers and to parents, gradually adapting her teaching to the students' changing needs. She learns from an older mentor, whose guidance is based on the educational methods and spiritual insights presented by Rudolf Steiner, whose perspective gives adolescence a new, more meaningful face. Understanding adolescent changes as part of our human destiny and our development toward individuality helps us guide young people as they take their first steps on the road to independence.

Book The Independence and Impartiality of ICSID Arbitrators

Download or read book The Independence and Impartiality of ICSID Arbitrators written by Maria Nicole Cleis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legitimacy of investor-State arbitration is a much-debated topic, with arbitrators’ independence and impartiality being one of the core concerns. In The Independence and Impartiality of ICSID Arbitrators, Maria Nicole Cleis explores how unbiased decision-making is ensured under the ICSID Convention. Juxtaposing existing disqualification decisions in the ICSID system against corresponding requirements in related dispute settlement systems, the book convincingly argues that the current approach to disqualification requests against ICSID arbitrators is too exacting in light of the high stakes of investor-State disputes. The author’s nuanced analysis of the status quo is followed by novel suggestions for reforms (including a proposal for ICSID-specific guidelines on conflict of interest), making the book a valuable source of ideas on constructive paths forward.

  • Author : Stephen Tierney
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford

Download or read book Constitutional Referendums written by Stephen Tierney and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of referendums around the world has grown remarkably in the past thirty years and, in particular, referendums are today deployed more than ever in the settlement of constitutional questions, even in countries with little or no tradition of direct democracy. This is the first book by a constitutional theorist to address the implications of this development for constitutional democracy in a globalizing age, when many of the older certainties surrounding sovereignty and constitutional authority are coming under scrutiny. The book identifies four substantive constitutional processes where the referendum is regularly used today: the founding of new states; the creation or amendment of constitutions; the establishment of complex new models of sub-state autonomy, particularly in multinational states; and the transfer of sovereign powers from European states to the European Union. The book, as a study in constitutional theory, addresses the challenges this phenomenon poses not only for particular constitutional orders, which are typically structured around a representative model of democracy, but for constitutional theory more broadly. The main theoretical focus of the book is the relationship between the referendum and democracy. It addresses the standard criticisms which the referendum is subjected to by democratic theorists and deploys both civic republican theory and the recent turn in deliberative democracy to ask whether by good process-design the constitutional referendum is capable of facilitating the engagement of citizens in deliberative acts of constitution-making. With the referendum firmly established as a fixture of contemporary constitutionalism, the book addresses the key question for constitutional theorists and practitioners of how might its operation be made more democratic in age of constitutional transformation.

Book Hydrological Modeling

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ramakar Jha
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2022-02-05
  • ISBN : 3030813584
  • Pages : 517 pages

Download or read book Hydrological Modeling written by Ramakar Jha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-05 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book carefully considers hydrological models which are essential for predicting floods, droughts, soil moisture estimation, land use change detection, geomorphology and water structures. The book highlights recent advances in the area of hydrological modelling in the Ganga Basin and other internationally important river basins. The impact of climate change on water resources is a global concern. Water resources in many countries are already stressed, and climate change along with burgeoning population, rising standard of living and increasing demand are adding to the stress. Furthermore, river basins are becoming less resilient to climatic vagaries. Fundamental to addressing these issues is hydrological modelling which is covered in this book. Integrated water resources management is vital to ensure water and food security. Integral to the management is groundwater and solute transport, and this book encompasses tools that will be useful to mitigate the adverse consequences of natural disasters.

Book Handbook Of Financial Econometrics Mathematics Statistics And Machine Learning In 4 Volumes

Download or read book Handbook Of Financial Econometrics Mathematics Statistics And Machine Learning In 4 Volumes written by Cheng Few Lee and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 5053 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four-volume handbook covers important concepts and tools used in the fields of financial econometrics, mathematics, statistics, and machine learning. Econometric methods have been applied in asset pricing, corporate finance, international finance, options and futures, risk management, and in stress testing for financial institutions. This handbook discusses a variety of econometric methods, including single equation multiple regression, simultaneous equation regression, and panel data analysis, among others. It also covers statistical distributions, such as the binomial and log normal distributions, in light of their applications to portfolio theory and asset management in addition to their use in research regarding options and futures contracts. In both theory and methodology, we need to rely upon mathematics, which includes linear algebra, geometry, differential equations, Stochastic differential equation (Ito calculus), optimization, constrained optimization, and others. These forms of mathematics have been used to derive capital market line, security market line (capital asset pricing model), option pricing model, portfolio analysis, and others. In recent times, an increased importance has been given to computer technology in financial research. Different computer languages and programming techniques are important tools for empirical research in finance. Hence, simulation, machine learning, big data, and financial payments are explored in this handbook.Led by Distinguished Professor Cheng Few Lee from Rutgers University, this multi-volume work integrates theoretical, methodological, and practical issues based on his years of academic and industry experience.

Book At the Threshold of Liberty

Download or read book At the Threshold of Liberty written by Tamika Y. Nunley and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capital city of a nation founded on the premise of liberty, nineteenth-century Washington, D.C., was both an entrepot of urban slavery and the target of abolitionist ferment. The growing slave trade and the enactment of Black codes placed the city's Black women within the rigid confines of a social hierarchy ordered by race and gender. At the Threshold of Liberty reveals how these women--enslaved, fugitive, and free--imagined new identities and lives beyond the oppressive restrictions intended to prevent them from ever experiencing liberty, self-respect, and power. Consulting newspapers, government documents, letters, abolitionist records, legislation, and memoirs, Tamika Y. Nunley traces how Black women navigated social and legal proscriptions to develop their own ideas about liberty as they escaped from slavery, initiated freedom suits, created entrepreneurial economies, pursued education, and participated in political work. In telling these stories, Nunley places Black women at the vanguard of the history of Washington, D.C., and the momentous transformations of nineteenth-century America.
