Book excerpt: Nancy and George are thrilled to take part in the filming of a pirate movie onboard the Swift Adventure, a reproduction of a centuries-old sailing ship. Twin brothers Andrew and Daniel Wagner are producing the low-budget film, and they’ve asked their friends to help out. With Nancy as assistant director and George set to play a notorious female pirate, the girls can’t wait to jump in. But a series of robberies at the hotel where the cast and crew are staying, plus the discovery of gold doubloons at the crime scenes, has almost everyone in the production under suspicion. Could the robberies be a publicity stunt staged by one of the brothers? An angry crew member trying to sabotage the film? With her own safety in jeopardy, Nancy needs to figure out who in a big cast of characters is masterminding this criminal production.

Book excerpt: "[The book contains] one medal engraving from a daguerreotype, by Joseph Saxton, of the front of the Mint, using a medal ruling machine, to copy a relief executed by Christian Gobrecht from the daguerreotype...This book is considered the first publication from a daguerreotype in the United States. A remarkable example of this little used process and of major importance in the history of photography and photomechanical printing in the United States. Joseph Saxton not only produced the oldest extant daguerreotype now in the United States, but also invented the modification to the ruling machine used for this publication."--Hanson Collection catalog, p. 8.

Book The Monetary Imagination of Edgar Allan Poe

Download or read book The Monetary Imagination of Edgar Allan Poe written by Heinz Tschachler and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first-of-its-kind treatment, Heinz Tschachler offers an account of Edgar Allan Poe's relation to the world of banking and money in antebellum America. He contends that Poe gave the full force of his censure to the acrimonious debates about America's money, Andrew Jackson's bank war, the panic of 1837 and the ensuing depression, and the nation's inability to furnish a "sound and uniform currency." Poe's attitude is overt in his early satires, more subdued in "The Gold-Bug," and almost an undercurrent in writings that enter into and historicize the discovery of gold in California. In Poe's writings much is concealed, though his art also reveals while it conceals, in this instance, a deep felt desire for an authority that would guarantee a measure of permanence and continuity to the nation' s currency. That kind of currency was finally furnished by Abraham Lincoln (both were born in 1809; Poe died in 1849), at one time a dedicated reader of Poe's tales and sketches. Wielding his "power of regulation," Lincoln came to save the Union not just militarily but also economically. Under him, the United States government finally provided the kind of "sound and uniform currency" that Poe in his writings could only name and rehearse.
