Book Climate Change and Eye Disease

Download or read book Climate Change and Eye Disease written by Scott Fraser and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact of climate change on eye disease and eye health. Filling a lacuna in the existing literature, Scott Fraser takes a deep dive into the eye diseases that are most affected by the climate crisis and explores the subsequent burden on organisations, charities and healthcare systems. Fraser begins by including short primer chapters on the basics of climate science and climate change, highlighting which environmental mechanisms directly and indirectly affect our health and why. He then looks in detail at the direct and indirect threats to eye health from climate change and examines factors including changing insect vectors, trauma from extreme weather events such as wildfires, floods and droughts, as well as the impact of crop failure, malnutrition, animal and plant migration. Highlighting the Global North vs South divide, the book goes on to consider issues around eye care, exploring the increased burden that climate-induced chronic eye diseases including cataracts, macular degeneration and nutritional eye diseases are placing on health care systems. These chapters also reflect on the ways in which eye care, ophthalmology, optometry, pharmaceutical and medical device companies all contribute to the climate footprint themselves. Unique and timely, this book will be a great resource for students and clinicians of ophthalmology, optometry and allied eye care professions, as well as climate scientists, researchers, policy makers, charities, NGOs working in related fields of environment and health.

As in my first book, this addition seeks to evaluation the present condition of the church in the world. The workers of iniquity do not bother those from whom there is no threat. For that reason, this addition seeks to look deep within the modern church to sees where the modern world has slipped in among us, because we were unaware. And so, the Threat from Within Revisited, come to the reader with eyes wide open, exposing the threat of Secular Humanism within the church, the assault on the family, and the unceasing attack on Biblical inerrancy. Let's look at the path of encroachment, brick by brick, that has taken the church to the brink of becoming irrelevant to a lost world looking for a Savior.

  • Author : Nathaniel Stein
  • Publisher : Turner Publishing Company
  • Release : 2024-01-16
  • ISBN : 1684429714
  • Pages : 149 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Threat tells the darkly comic story of Melvin Levin, a middle-aged man who is dissatisfied with his dull and mediocre life. That is, until he receives a mysterious death threat in the mail. Terrified at first, Levin soon becomes accustomed to the threat—and then, increasingly, delighted with it, thrilled with his newfound importance as a “threatened man.” But as his obsession with maintaining this identity becomes all-consuming, he risks blinding himself to the twin dangers of the threat itself and—perhaps worse—his own deranged mind. At once absurdist, moving, and savagely funny, The Threat is a timeless parable of the comic lengths to which people go to protect the delusions that validate them.

Book Satire and the Threat of Speech

Download or read book Satire and the Threat of Speech written by Catherine M. Schlegel and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2005-12-29 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his first book of Satires, written in the late, violent days of the Roman republic, Horace exposes satiric speech as a tool of power and domination. Using critical theories from classics, speech act theory, and others, Catherine Schlegel argues that Horace's acute poetic observation of hostile speech provides insights into the operations of verbal control that are relevant to his time and to ours. She demonstrates that though Horace is forced by his political circumstances to develop a new, unthreatening style of satire, his poems contain a challenge to our most profound habits of violence, hierarchy, and domination. Focusing on the relationships between speaker and audience and between old and new style, Schlegel examines the internal conflicts of a notoriously difficult text. This exciting contribution to the field of Horatian studies will be of interest to classicists as well as other scholars interested in the genre of satire.

Book The Threat of Solipsism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jônadas Techio
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2020-11-23
  • ISBN : 3110702886
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book The Threat of Solipsism written by Jônadas Techio and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much attention has been paid to Wittgenstein’s treatment of solipsism and to Cavell’s treatment of skepticism. But comparatively little has been made of the striking connections between the early Wittgenstein’s view on the truth of solipsism and Cavell’s view on the truth of skepticism, and how that relates to the claim that the later Wittgenstein sees privacy as a constant human possibility. This book offers close readings of representative writings by both authors and argues that an adequate understanding of solipsism and skepticism requires taking into account a set of underlying difficulties related to a disappointment with finitude which might ultimately lead to the threat of solipsism. That threat is further interpreted as a wish not to bear the burden of having to constantly negotiate and nurture the fragile connections with the world and others which are the conditions of possibility for finite beings to achieve meaning and community. By presenting Wittgenstein’s and Cavell’s responses in an order which reflects the chronology of their writings, the result is a cohesive articulation of some under-appreciated aspects of their philosophical methodologies which has the potential of reorienting our entire reading of their work.

Medal of Honor winner Commander Dan Lenson wonders who proposed that he be assigned to the White House military staff. It's a dubious honor---serving a president the Joint Chiefs hate more than any other in modern history. Lenson reports to the West Wing to direct a multiservice team working to interdict the flow of drugs from Latin America. Never one to just warm a chair, he sets out to help destroy the Cartel---and uncovers a troubling thread of clues that link cunning and ruthless drug lord Don Juan Nuñez to an assault on a nuclear power plant in Mexico, an obscure Islamic relief agency in Los Angeles, and an air cargo company's imminent flight plan across the United States. Lenson has to battle civilian aides and his own distaste for politics to derail a terrorist strike over the Mexican border. His punishment for breaking the rules to do so is to be sent to the East Wing . . . as the military aide carrying the nuclear "football," the locked briefcase with the secret codes for a nuclear strike, for a president he suspects is having an affair with his wife. And something else is going on beneath the day-to-day turmoil and backstabbing. As his marriage deteriorates and his frustration with Washington builds, Lenson becomes an unwitting accomplice in a dangerous and subversive conspiracy. The U.S. military is responsible for its Commander in Chief's transportation and security. If someone felt strongly enough about it . . . it would be easy for the president to die.
